The pros and cons of engineering automation
Engineering Automation has been supporting manufacturing companies in drastically cutting down the time that goes into preparing sales quotations, drafting, engineering, and manufacturing.
Technology has brought about a sea change in the way manufacturing was done over the past 20 years. People would initially manufacture and fabricate manually. Now, with the penetration of computers and technology into various industries, manufacturers are fast adopting automation. Engineering automation has become a major factor in determining a company’s ability to have an edge in the manufacturing industry. It has been continually setting standards for the industry. However, there are some negatives too. Look at these points.
- Rigidity: When a company has more machines and lesser men performing tasks for it, it loses on the flexibility and variety that a human being can bring.
- Pollutiong: Machines use different gases and chemicals to operate and also release a lot of toxic waste causing pollution in and around workplace.
- Heavy investment: Automated machines are the most expensive ones. If a company decides to use them, it needs a plan a huge initial budget to buy and create a system to keep them operational. Various types and degrees of automation require costs varying from thousands to millions of dollars. At the same time, machines can sometimes lead to the most unpredictable costs. And these sudden costs – such as R&D, maintenance, operation training -- might be higher than even the costs earned by automation.
- Augments unemployment: Engineering automation calls for lesser number of employees, pushing up unemployment rates.
Engineering design today faces a lot of challenges, one of them being the pressure of high costs. To share the risks that large scale projects bring, engineering and procurement companies (EPCs) often strike partnerships with other EPCs. Renewable Energy Projects In India – The Next Big Thing
The Indian government is keyed up about achieving its target of 100 GW power by 2022 by starting sufficient renewable energy projects in India. However, the fact remains that the existing infrastructure can’t help it achieve this unless some drastic measures are taken. This was revealed by an IndiaSpend analysis early this year.
As a recent Economic Times report puts it, India needs to add a total renewable energy of 130.76 GW which, divided over the next 6 years, means tripling the existing average power generation capacity. And this is not just a political target. It is also an essential measure in reducing global warming.
The world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) levels crossed the dangerous 400 parts per million levels. And the 2016 Draft National Electricity Plan says that the power sector makes for 50 per cent of India’s CO2 emissions; this is also because coal –the most used power sources -- is highly polluting.
The Paris Agreement in 2015 got 162 nations to agree to contribute substantially in curbing the rise of temperature on the earth. India was part of it and committed that it would, by 2030, arrange to source 40 per cent of its electricity from non-fossil fuels.
India took its commitment seriously as, by 2016 October, it successfully raised the renewable energy by 2 per cent, if government data is to be believed. The ambitious target was backed by awareness campaigns on the significance of renewable energy projects in India. Even companies which didn’t come under government subsidies played a part in educating consumers about the virtues of renewable energy. More and more people started understanding that they now have alternative sources for their household power needs and that they don’t have to totally depend on the grid.
Power sector experts, however, are apprehensive about the renewable energy target India has set. The target might be more optimistic than realistic, they say, drawing attention to a study by the United Nations Environment Program that claims this target as 22 per cent of global renewable energy capacity in 2015. Besides, not sufficient renewable energy projects were auctioned in India during the last quarter of 2016. Another study by the US-based Institute for Energy, Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) says that the public and private investments made in renewable energy in 2015 -- $10.2 billion -- was nearly just a quarter of what was required for such a massive target.
According to London-based Bloomberg New Energy Finance, India needs to put in at least $100 billion over the next six years in asset financing to achieve that renewable energy target.
Meanwhile, a government Renewable Energy Invest Summit that draws renewable energy financiers and developers was postponed indefinitely last year. While the government “needed more time to organize the event”, the renewable energy companies are nowhere near to the targets.
At the same time, the uncertainty about the purchasing of generated power by publicly-owned companies, along with regulatory issues such as government clearances and tedious land acquisitions, have made lenders and equity investors skeptical about investing in renewable energy projects.
Suzlon Group chairman suggests that the Indian renewable industry must undergo drastic changes to attract funds, for example, finance schemes such as debt for longer terms for renewable energy projects.
Power is a crucial part of economic growth of a nation. And according to Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal, India’s power sector has Rs 15 trillion investment potential in the coming 5 years; which means immense opportunities in power generation and distribution. Hopefully, the government makes the most of the investment potential in raising the number of renewable energy projects in India too.

Sustainable supply chain management, the new standard
A new emerging paradigm is set to transform the existing practice of supply chain management: sustainability. And this trend is irreversible. Supply chains and organizations may take some time to give up the traditional paradigm and get on to the new paradigm of sustainable supply chain management completely.
While organizations are still undergoing this transition, the current trends show the new paradigm getting dominant in the coming years. It would affect both the research and the practical sides of businesses.
Traditionally, the management of supply chains meant only financially maximizing their performance, without considering whether they are environmentally and socially sustainable. It was highlighted by several studies that the existing frameworks blatantly neglected the social and the environmental dimensions while setting the measures of efficiency. They focused exclusively on the financial dimension.
But younger organizations are taking sustainable supply chain management seriously. They are ready to explore the opportunities beyond the traditional profit maximization mindset which, they have realized, is not long term.
The process of bringing sustainability begins with the evaluation of the impact that a particular supply chain’s operations make. This is followed by the introduction of environmental protection principles in every activity – designing products, sourcing raw material and manufacturing, warehousing, and finally distributing – of a supply chain.
A growing number of supply chains are introducing numerous voluntary environmental initiatives, which are focusing exclusively on the environmental dimension, to promote green business practices. However, the social dimension still remains left out without enough attention. And this realization resulted into organizations implementing humanitarian supply chains which are related to social charity and disaster relief.
Of these, the disaster relief supply chains deal with minimizing the effect of calamities on human lives. As they need to respond to multiple interventions with urgency, time is an important concern. Social charity supply chains, though more or less have the same purpose -- social performance – they are more permanent types as they work to fulfill the basic needs of the vulnerable population.
The sustainable supply chain management models thus perform well to not just fit into the requirements of financial viability, but also the expanded concepts of social and natural dimensions. It is resourceful, efficient, and fulfills the industry stakeholders’ current needs without compromising the future generations’ abilities. There are experts and decision makers who believe that there is a trade-off between sustainability and the original financial dimension. However, a lot of new studies have proved that the application of sustainable supply chains essentially brings long term commercial and financial success.
Supply chains, after all, are dynamic and so they are bound to evolve. With time, they learn, innovate and change to become more and more sustainable. Various studies on supply chains have indicated that their approach can keep changing. For instance, more sustainable approaches have replaced the traditional approaches to make decisions. So there is a hope that organizations, which have learnt, innovated and adopted green approach in their attempt to create socially responsible operations, will eventually reach a stage where there is a highest level of sustainable supply chain management.

Environmental sustainability, a Precondition for Development
Environment is undoubtedly the basic reason why sustainable development gains importance. The term “environmental sustainability” together makes complete sense as sustainability does literally connect with environment -- the space around us. The requirement of sustainability is preservation of this space’s purity, and to take measures for its long-term survival.
The definition of sustainability, right from the times when its need was first felt, had been “a balance of economy and the basic ecological support systems”. This basically meant a nation’s economic growth must complement the well-being of its society as well as the environment.
The millenium development goals (MDGs) totally shifted the focus away from the money being spent on development to the achievements it brought. An annual global CEO survey undertaken by PwC records 71% of Indian CEOs’ belief that India, with its steady growth over the past few years, will soon earn the position of the world's economic engine – which was held by China so far.
But the position comes with a heavy price: the fast depletion of natural resources and higher pollution levels. Unmanaged growth will make a whole nation unsustainable. Today we are benefitting or suffering from how our ancestors chose to treat the nature. So, for a better future, our policies today must include environmental sustainability.
Sustainable development simply means achieving economic, social and environmental progress without exhausting the finite natural resources of this planet. However, this kind of development faces a host of challenges, to beat which India must follow certain measures.
The cities in India are urbanizing at an astonishing scale and speed, putting enormous pressure on the urban transport infrastructure. The resultant pollution and congestion needs to be urgently curbed to benefit the future generations. And this can be done by linking the development of urban transport systems with environmental sustainability. For example, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is an efficient way of local transport. This can be created by backing it up with the right amount of political will, judicious resource allocation, and high level of technical expertise.
Making city bus services -- the cost-effective and convenient-for-all public transport mode -- smarter and more comfortable for passengers will give power to public transport over private vehicles.
Another challenge facing conservation of environment is uncontrolled power consumption. About 97% of the energy that India consumes comes from crop waste, wood, charcoal and other solid fuels for activities such as heating homes and cooking. This means only 3% is actually generated. The solid fuels keep on emitting carbon dioxide, adding to the climate change. Conventional sources are exhausting and will be over in a few decades from now and the earth will have to depend on biomass and wind energy, which hold great promise in terms of environmental sustainability. The government must incentivize such initiatives even when they are taken up by the private sector.
The third obstacle is scarcity of drinking water. Surprisingly, despite water being a renewable resource, millions of people lack access to it. And this is not because there is less water, but because there is an imbalance in its distribution and use, such as disparity in extraction of water, etc. As a result, demand exceeds supply of water. People have to do with less water or else untreated water, leading eventually to either famine or disease. Some of the solutions are drip irrigation, rain water harvesting and water-recycling. Another way is tax waivers for houses taking initiatives in rain-water harvesting systems and planting saplings.
The last barrier is the existing quality of education in India. To learn and understand the benefits of environmental sustainability, people must have basic education. And by education, we mean real learning and not mere mark scoring. And the only solution is to create quality educational infrastructure and intense campaigns to create awareness regarding the importance of education. Lucrative scholarships and easy student loans will do a great job in supporting such initiatives.
Besides enforcing financial instruments and political regulations, it is also vital to educate people about the significance of sustainable development. A fundamental change of mindsets can only turn the situation around for a better state.
Environmental sustainability is therefore not a choice. It is a precondition for development. It is difficult to bring about sustainable development, but it is unavoidable responsibility. With stronger policies and effective execution, the government can demonstrate how growth and sustainability can go hand in hand.
