i've been thinking a lot about the at times aggressive reassurance (to kenny or ibushi or the audience or all of the above, i don't think it matters much) to the way the GL story has been kept alive. and now, due to uh, certain whispers in the wind, this might be even more relevant?
but saying it was kept so staunchly alive is old news for anyone who's been following along even for a little while: you can open kenny's book at any point you want, but the chances are very high that you'll eventually stumble upon this love story that's tightly attached to his character like sock garters underneath his slacks, especially the big moments. oh the first foreigner to win the prestigious G1 tournament? well, that sit down last ride is a move that—oh, the press conference? yeah, he keeps trolling the interviewers because he doesn't want to mention his na—what, the necklace? you see that's because—and so on and so on. not to speak of the day that he finally wins the IWGP belt he had so coveted from an opponent he could not for the life of him overcome, no matter how many times he threw his android head against the wall. and when that day finally comes, he makes sure that even the people in the furthest rows, the people tuning in for the cool moves, the people who are fans and the people who aren't, the people who have never heard of DDT, get the message loud and clear: he's my guardian angel to whom i owe everything. i could not have done this without him. he saved me. depending on who's asking (or not asking) and where he is at the time, he owes his career, his life, his wrestling, his heart or his soul to this guy.
and the thread goes further back. 2008 to 2014, again and again and again he mentions where others, especially the press and the fans, can see and hear or read, that he was lost before he stumbled upon tapes of ibushi. that he considered himself a wrestling failure. that even after fighting him he didn't know if he'd ever get another chance to prove himself. and even when, for the purposes of kayfabe, said feelings have turned into slightly exaggerated bitterness and grief, ibushi's presence is still there nonetheless, like a handprint from a ghost. even if you pretend it's not there, it's always staring at you, the viewer, right over his heart. kenny makes sure that it's staring at you. he's haunted, and he's making it everyone's problem.
at the very end he will call it having "exposed himself and his deep love for ibushi to the world", and i can't find a more apt description for the decade-long act of going on stage and proclaiming in costume, but with a voice that is your own only and that no one but you wrote, that goddammit, this guy is my soulmate, i love him. wrestling is a ridiculous sport-theater; it receives a lot of ridicule and is only nowadays slowly being accepted as a legitimate art medium the likes of movies or books, so even if you do go onto that stage and recite a love poem from your heart, chances are people will either make fun of it in some capacity, or forget about it in two weeks for the next spectacle. so kenny omega makes sure to take the stage again and again, and recite different verses of the same poem, until everyone who's willing to listen has gotten it into their head: he's in love.
he gets veritably irate when tanahashi throws out the mere suggestion that he should let ibushi go. there's a snide, sarcastic anger in his voice when he's asked to comment on said suggestion that has nothing to do with the gaijin vs ace feud, nothing to do with the people needling him and his friends about their future in wrestling, in the company. fuck you, he says (not literally, but you get the drift), we're not going to turn on one another, we're not gonna betray one another just because it would make for a "good" story. we made the mistake of thinking that was anything but forever once, and we aren't gonna make that mistake again.
it's the nature of wrestling to defy such lines, but in a speech filled with so much passion and anger, there's no line that can be safely, definitively drawn to tell you, no doubt about it, the below is all show, the above is all true. before AEW, the argument maybe, possibly could have at one point been made that kenny led a splintered life, one existence beginning in japan and another ending in north america, but once he very evidently and very loudly carried that story with him over the ocean and kept it strapped to his shoulders in spite of pandemics and bad business blood, in spite of near unparalleled physical and mental suffering, i feel like said argument quickly withered away. can you truly fully explain the collector without ibushi? can you watch his biggest matches and not feel the weight of his wings on the entire thing? can you look at the tag team with hangman, at the halloween VTR, at the contract signing before full gear, at the subtle, nearly invisible star inside the omega sign underneath his arms, right where someone who studied where armors are weakest would aim his arrow, and say, yes this is all not-love, not-grief, not-heartbreak?
and that's not the end of it.
like with kenny, there's enough archeological material to excavate in ibushi's case to fill its own book, and while he doesn't (for the most part) share kenny's aggressive approach in making sure the whole world knows, the connection they share is special and unique for ibushi just the same. he was already burnt-out before met him, and would burn out many times in the years to come, near constantly so, but every time kenny was there to reinvigorate him, inspire him. i too wouldn't be here without you, he says, and means every syllable. wrestling, especially tag wrestling, is fun to me again because of you. the sheer fact that this connection exists is so holy to ibushi that he's thoroughly uninterested in even an attempt at explanations. why explain the sacred and turn it profane in the process? is it not enough that he moved to a different country to be near me and that we shared something intangible right from the start? is it not enough that we reunited (and then reunited again)?
like kenny, he made sure the miracle was not forgotten. even though commentary would try and sabotage his art, without words, he crafted a physical distinction in the ring between the different kinds of knees he uses so that during the rare times he did use a v-trigger, there would be no doubt it was a v-trigger. it was ibushi who reached out when he could no longer take the loneliness. he reached out in yearning, honest, open, vulnerable to anything, unafraid of telling the world he never forgot. for 13 years he held on to a lowres youtube video and a memory. it was ibushi who sat on commentary during two of kenny's matches—infamously hard-hitting and brutal matches—damn near paralyzed with fear, voice tight in his throat, rushing into the ring (or, more secretly, backstage) as soon as manners allowed him to. the same guy who smirked in glee whenever he got to inflict fireworks-based punishment on nakazawa and co now knelt so gently beside kenny and followed his erratic movements with noticeable concern.
and it was ibushi who wrote that things never really changed. we may have gotten older, we may be different now than we were, in different places, with different faces, but we still have this, just like we always did. neither kenny's darkest depths of jealousy and hurt, nor my darkest depths of jealousy and hurt could break this. people always say kenny is the one who's starstruck (pun intended), and i would never dare suggest he's not, but i can't look at ibushi putting his hand over his heart before the last golden shower, breathing out like he's in the confession scene of a jane austen novel, and not think, this man is in love. i can't look at him putting his hand over his heart, tears rolling over his face, when he's about to meet kenny as an opponent in the ring for the first time in 4 years, and not think, this man is in love.
he marches on, alone, but even then he gladly admits that he gave his heart away, knowing he would never get it back. with such wonder in his eyes, like the haunted prince in a fairy tale, he says, isn't this amazing? isn't it astonishing? in my entire life i have never had this with anyone else. no matter how quiet, that too is aggressive defiance in a world that tells you love is sappy at best and an illusion at worst.
