Wing Chun: Hands of Blitz
Izael G. Gomez
Remember the movie artists Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Robert Downey Jr.? Did you know that were all notable in the field of martial arts? But what kind of martial arts do they actually specialize in?
Wing Chun, a southern Chinese kung fu style which is characterized by narrow stances with elbows close to the body, is a self-defense method that requires the use of quick arm movements and strong legs to pin down opponents. It also emphasizes not only the centerline principle, but also the central line principle. This is the line that runs from the center of your body to your opponent. When you attack in a linear direction, your line is away from your opponent while your central line faces his or her center.
According to legend, Wing Chun was made by a Buddhist nun Ng Mui, a shaolin kung fu master. She devised a compact form of kung fu based on her martial art training and personal experience. She exploited the weaknesses of other martial arts and created a new one which would be advantageous for all people, regardless of their size and strength. She created a compact style of kung fu and named her martial art after one of her students Yim Wing Chun.
One of the basic forms of Wing Chun is Siu Nim Tao ( 小念頭), which is translated as the little idea, is the first open-hand form from which all forms and techniques depend. It concentrates on a form that presents concepts of energy, motion and position in a fixed context. Imagine the form having already 108 movements in a static position. What else if it would be used in a moving context?
Siu Nim Tao has been adopted and changed over the past hundred years. The form has been said to be inspired from the hybrid snake and crane style kung fu. The first section of the form concentrates on training for basic power by tensing and relaxing the arm. The second section emphasizes training on how to use the power or strength that has been generated in the first section. The third section circles mainly on the correct positioning of the basic hand and arm movements, and building muscle memory.
Wing Chun focuses on the power of the joints. Close combat, quick punches and tight defense helps in destabilizing the movement of opponents, making them flinch and lose control of the situation. This martial art also focuses on redirecting the blows made against you to double the power when it bounces back.
Great power can be generated from the center of the body; however, the centerline must be protected at all times because the vital organs are mainly located in the center of one’s body. Thus, one should not expose his or her own centerline to others.
Tumblr media
I am currently a green-belt karateka of Shitō-ryū. This is karate style founded by Kenwa Mabuni which is known for its physical strength and long powerful stances derived from Shuri-te (indigenous martial art in Shuri, Okinawa) styles such as Shorin-ryū and Shotokan styles, and its eight-directional movement derived from Uechi-ryū and Gōjū-ryū . I believe that all martial arts are great in their form and their techniques, but one kind of martial arts intrigued me.
Wing Chun Kung Fu Association (WKA) Survival Tactics Philippines made its way in 2010 and was lead by Sifu Jayson A. Navarra, a Filipino national from Muntinlupa City, and founded by Sigung Joel Resurrecion of WKA Italy, another Filipino national from Laguna City. He was one of the many who started and spread Wing Chun in the Philippines.
Tumblr media
Jayson studied Aikido and had knowledge in doing high kicks when he was in high school. He was enthusiastic about martial arts, and he came to a point in his life that he wanted to teach a martial art that was simple yet applicable in most situations. He came across Wing Chun, the best martial art that describes his dream martial art. As he went on with learning Wing Chun, he had met two of the most prominent people in his journey. One is Sifu Galpo, who used to train with masters in Taiwan. The other one is Sifu Casas, under Golden Harvest Wing Chun,  a Wing Chun who has his headquarters located in Japan and is headed by Sifu Mc Gowan.
His passion is teaching Wing Chun to others. He believes that this martial art will be one of the best in terms of practical use and effectiveness. “Simplicity. Explosiveness. Effectiveness.” These are the words best to describe Wing Chun. Believe it or not, I have taken up lessons and practical application of Wing Chun and made so much improvement with the way I move, as if I am being prepared for what situation is brought to my life.
If you want to defend in a soft and relaxed manner, this is one of the best martial arts to go to. I believe that this martial art is one of the most simultaneous when it comes to movement of arms and feet. I really liked how the execution of Wing Chun is done since it uses a relaxed method of releasing the core strength of the body.
Here’s a sample video of how Wing Chun works in different combat situations.

A Must Tell Miracle-filled Parish
Izael G. Gomez
Tumblr media
One of the well-known churches in remembered for its red and golden color in Cavite, Saint Gregory Parish Church, was built under the inspiration of Saint Gregory The Great, who was held patron saint of Indang after the town separated from Silang, Cavite in 1625. It is the only church in Cavite that has a hand-painted polychromatic trompe l'oeil, an art technique which was used involving realistic imagery to create optical illusions that view an object to exist in three dimensions, 18th century architecture and the very ancient convent with windows wide and well-wrought iron on its sides. A miraculous history wraps this parish as it was believed that the Statue of Saint Gregory manifested an extraordinary event which made the people of Indang believe that miracles are tangible experiences which really happen and it is something to be greatly proud of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The church was also known for its seven magical archangels who guarded this stone church from the colonizers during the time of the Spaniards and it attributes to the miracles performed by Saint Gregory. One time, someone found behind the church a burnt painting together with trash which appeared seven people. People believed that these were the seven archangels.

Camatchile: A Fruit-like Bread of Indang
Izael G. Gomez
Tumblr media
Imagine bite-sized breads shaped like fleshy, succulent and mouth-watering camatchile fruit sprinkled with sweet and tasty confectioner’s white sugar, would you still crave from overrated kinds of bread like ensaymada, cheese bread, or Choco rolls ordinarily sold and displayed at your local bakeries?  Since Indang once envisioned being the vegetable basket of Cavite, one bakery owner in this providence thought of making a unique baked product inspired from a certain, common local fruit called camatchile. This fruit-like bread is called Camatchile. Since the start of his family’s baking business in 1985, Mr. Roderick Peñaflorida Rodriguez’s bakery at Poblacion 3 seems to be successful in making this bread one of a kind not only for its appearance, but also for its taste. It is considered as one of the proudly and originally made delicacies found only in Indang by its locals as well as its visitors. Whenever people unfamiliar with this baked food see and taste it, they cannot help themselves to wonder that camatchile bread really has a resemblance to the actual fruit because it really is molded based on its shape.
Tumblr media
Balikutsa, Bukayo, Kending Pinya, and Camachile (clockwise) are one of the fruits of Indang’s native delicacies.
The Camatchile bread is cooked in traditional fireplace locally known pugon. According to the owner, this is the most ideal way of baking this bread because they heating and cooking the dough comes out perfectly when a fireplace is used. Usually, when modern ovens are used to bake Camatchile bread, heat is not distributed evenly and as a result, cracked breads are produced. For years, the bakery continuously prefers to use the traditional way of cooking their products. They believe that due to their pugon’s demand to use dried woods in fueling, firing and cooking their dough, results are more favorable as they taste delicious with fewer chemicals.
The Bukayo of Indang, another delicacy of Indang, is infused with calamansi, making it a flavorful bread.
As Mr. Roderick told us about the secret behind their publicly-noted bread, he only disclosed that they always start making it during nighttime. Also, he tipped that the ideal temperature used in the fireplace should be at about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The ingredients were also mentioned; eggs, flour, baking soda, sugar, salt and maniac. The locals of Indang say that this delicacy is really tasty and this is also a frequently-ordered delicacy not only within the town but also in other places like Naic, Ternate and Amadeo. He said that Camatchile bread serves as one of the trademarks of Indang when it comes to local delicacies. This is sold in packs with prices ranging between P40, P45 and P50. This delicacy is best partnered with hot tabliya chocolate, coffee or milk during breakfast or merienda.

Flight (2012)
Tumblr media
This is a Robert Zemeckis film wherein a veteran pilot named Whip Whittaker (Denzel Washington) makes history after saving 96 out of 102 passengers on South Air Jet by making the plane fly inverted after experiencing a technical failure in the midst of the flight. This personal traumatic journey will keep you all the way as sympathy goes with Whip’s adventure.
Tumblr media
Whip developed a tremendous problem with alcohol and cocaine after having problems with his wife and the film starts with a finished all-night long party wherein he is with a flight attendant named Katerina (Nadine Velasquez). He gets back to work after shooting 2 lines of cocaine and co-pilot Evans (Brian Gerahty) got suspicious of him but his pilot glasses made him the man of the plane.
Tumblr media
During the first part of South Jet’s flight, they experienced great pressure during a disturbing rainstorm which made Whip think of putting the engines at high speed which made his co-pilot screamed guts out. Later, when the plane malfunctioned, they went into an uncontrollable nosedive. The plane goes down and Whip inverts the plane halt its descent causing the plane to turn upside down which caused the frame to show that it was a realistic scene. Everybody was shouting and even the flight attendants were panicking but Whip shows authority by instructing with calmness his co-pilot and head flight attendant Margaret to release whatever will make the plane crash hard and explode.
Tumblr media
The plane made a crash landing in an open field with a church having its outside baptism. A question comes into mind: Why would the director place a church in an open field and why was it the placed wherein the plane would crash? Many would answer this that the church serves as a moral reminder or lesson to stop all temptations including alcohol, sex, and illicit relationships even after marriage. But according to Zemeckis, the symbol of the church with its outside baptism is to portray hyperrealism wherein you see these things (baptism and funeral) before death. After the crash, will things change? Will Whip stop his addiction to alcohol?
Everything came in to his mind and he went to his grandpa’s farm and dumped all the alcohol and his lawyer (Don Cheadle) and union representative (Bruce Greenwood)informed him that the blood test shows that he was drunk during the flight.
Tumblr media
Intoxication risked everything important in Whip’s life, from his relationship with his wife up to his very career. Whip was helpless and could not find a way in escaping alcoholism. The situation of being rejected by his own family from the start because of alcohol has put Whip in a consequence which haunts him throughout his life.
Tumblr media
Denzel’s role as the savior of almost all the passengers in the film made him the protagonist despite of his inner conflict-addiction to alcohol. Where could we see a pilot who could manage a plane by giving systematically after drinking? It’s probably the issue in the film that the pilots of planes question but the director Zemeckis’ purpose of the film was to show the grave consequences of being an alcoholic in any kind of job and that it can adversely affect relationships within a family. Zemeckis also showed that the alcoholic veteran pilot in the end becomes a changed man after telling the truth that he was the one responsible for the tequila bottles in the plane. Whip’s son in the end asking a question “who are you” for his college application essay was the best scene for revealing the truth to the identity of Whip and Whip responds “that’s a good question” as sounds of a plane was heard passing by.

3 Idiots (2009)
Tumblr media
Three Idiots is a 2009-comedy-drama Bollywood film directed by Rajkumar Hiraniwhich about three college friends Raju, Farhan, and Rancho. In the start of the film, their lives where shown after they have graduated but Rancho went out of sight. Both Raju and Farhan were alarmed as they were about to know where is Rancho so the two did their stunts and it came out really funny. Raju was pant-less and Farhan acted as if he experienced stroke but after a while he went running out of the airport. We can see that in this film, we cannot measure the worth of the film in terms of who made it because there are a lot of creative people like Indians who are able to make these kinds of films.
Tumblr media
The journey of these three friends started when they were enrolled in the Imperial College of Engineering. They had the following different reasons as to why they ended up there: Raju-to carry them out of poverty; Farhan-to follow the dreams of his parents; and lastly, Rancho- to fulfill his passion in being an engineer. As they venture in the college life, they meet various people with different principles in life like the dean of their college, Professor Viru Sahastrabbudhe, one who always seeks perfection by being an overachiever and over thinker. He has his own belief in a perfect student. Another person is the trio’s classmate Chatur “Silencer” Ramalingam. His concept of learning is that he memorizes ideas, definitions, and explanations based on the book in order to impress the dean and to succeed in life. Chatur became the object of ridicule and laughter when he was assigned to make a speech and his writer was blamed that words were edited making the speech ridiculous and funny.
Tumblr media
Rancho on the other was portrayed a kick-out in the college because his way of studying was not what the professors wanted from him. A life lesson for a professor, “I’m teaching you how to teach” shows that being a professor does not only let the students rely too much on the books but rather they could let them explain ideas and concepts through a conventional way. He came out in the end as the most successful in the trio.
Tumblr media
At first, they met when the trio crashed Pia’s party in which they don’t know that Professor Viru was her father. Then, the trio delivered the baby of Pia’s sister on a makeshift operating table, and they experience all kinds of joys and failures.
Tumblr media
Music accompaniment of “Aal izz well” and “I wanna grow up once again” expressed the happiness and sadness portrayed in the film. Friendship really weighed so much even if they ended up with different statuses in life. Love for the family, obedience, and following your heart were other themes portrayed by the trio. We can also see that while we are studying in school, there are those who learn and those who don’t, some succeed and some fail. It was not important to be rich in terms of wealth because what was shown is that being truly rich is having your best friends who will never leave you no matter what.

The Vow (2014)
Tumblr media
The vow is a gentle-hearted film about a couple who were married for 4 years but after a traumatic car accident, the girl does not remember anything about her marriage and life as partners for life changed. This film is based on a true story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, Kim never regained her memory but now they live happily together with two children.
Tumblr media
It was a snowy night after they went to the movie house when they stopped in the middle of the road at a “stop sign” when the rear of the car they were in was crashed by a truck which caused the two to be in serious collision, sending Paige through the windshield and resulting into coma, losing her memory.
Tumblr media
Paige, who is a Lake Forest Blue Blood did not enjoy her life as a law student at the Northwestern School so she decided to move out of the city, away from her parents to an apartment near the School of the Art Institute. Leo on the other hand is an owner of an independent recording studio and reasons that he can do better that making songs on a laptop, like having the old Sun Records Sessions.
Tumblr media
These couples were played by Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum wherein they play their roles naturally expressing emotion and warmth. Although this movie was inspired by true events, it is seen that the film is exceeding its limit on the concept of realistic romance. The accident made Paige lose her current memory with Leo. Paige thinks that she is the same person before her life changed, living with her folks (Sam Neill and Jessica Lange) and still engaged to Jeremy (Scott Speedman). Her parents take advantage of her condition and Leo argues that she will get better when they live together. Later, Paige’s lifestyle became different from a timid and shy, she becomes sweater-set-wearing, mojito-drinking sorority girl.
Rachel McAdams was usually giving a smile and a blank stare throughout the film doing less action while Channing Tatum played his role well since he was seen as the model of patience through his endless effort. The choice of Tatum was right because it would show that this kind of person is hard to find-physically and mentally ideal.
In the film, Scott Speedman, Paige’s former fiancé took advantage of Paige’s memory loss as well as Paige’s parents. Scott is Leo’s rival since Paige’s memory was that of Scott. The place of shooting was to be in shot in Chicago but it was a shame that most shots were second unit shots of cablewires, movie house, and elevated trains. It would have been better if the couple were shot in scenes like the café Mnemonic, the Art Institute, or the wedding venue of Gwen, Paige’s sister. The main actors should have been put in the frame like the scene in the Art Institute going to the Millennium Park and under the Bean which was interesting because movement and the sceneries were emphasized. The movie did not reach the standard of a melodrama and if the movie was directed by other daring directors like Michel Gondry or Quentin Tarantino, it would have a more complex plot and it could be a psychological-thriller film which would make you watch it all over again just to understand it. The film is more of a dating film on a Valentine’s Day which is suited for the sole purpose of all movies-to entertain the mass.

The Fault in our Stars (2014)
Tumblr media
This film is based on a best-selling novel of John Green about an intelligent girl of 16 named Hazel Grace Lancaster (Woodley) who contracted cancer when she was 13 but experienced a miracle which prolonged her life after going through an experimental treatment. She has to go around carrying an oxygen tank in a carry bag in which her life depends on it. Life for her was uncertain because she didn’t know when her life was going to end. This is a tale is inspired by a true event, tragic teenager Esther Earl, a friend of the book's American author John Green, who died just three weeks after her 16th birthday when she lost a four-year battle with thyroid cancer.
Tumblr media
Hazel’s parents (Laura Dern, Sam Trammell) saw that she was in deep depression and she was limitlessly reading “An Imperial Affliction”, a cancer-themed novel of Peter Van Houten. They have observed some symptoms of depression and gently insisted Hazel that she needs to go to a weekly basement church support group led by Patrick (Mike Birbiglia).
Tumblr media
Augustus meets again Hazel outside of the church and asks her if she would like to go to the movies and it starts to build the rapport between them and by reading Hazel’s favorite books and staying up until morning, Augustus slowly peels of every layer towards Hazel’s heart. The relationship that was shown in the film by Director Josh Boone was a subtle portrayal of the line in the novel: “pain demands to be felt” in which made him one of the hardest in terms of determining cinematic style.
If you compare Hazel (Woodley) with Augustus (Elgort), Hazel is having ease in Green’s intricacy in dialogue while Augustus is stiff and kind of unnatural when he speaks his lines. Green expects Augustus to be formal in delivering his line but it seems that Augustus was nervous which made him spoke unclearly by slurring his lines. The novel that Hazel read was shared with Augustus and they were inspired to a visit the author of Hazel’s favorite novel. We can observe that through the charisma portrayed by Augustus, it could not cope with Hazel’s performance. Hazel’s naturalism in the film can bring more opportunities to the film industry. Augustus has also a great opportunity in the film industry because he already has given traits-boyishness and handsomeness which gives him the plus factor when it goes along with proper delivery of lines. Director Boone was able to establish trust in his actors wherein they could carry their own dramatic weight. This is a must watch film. I can say that reading the book contains heavier details but if you want to know what the story really wants to picture out, you should watch it.

Redtails (2012)
Tumblr media
A film directed by Anthony Hemingway about 996 Tuskegee airmen which compose of distinguished African-American aviators who are trained during the onslaught of World War II. These men were raised up in honour when they employed their strategies when they were able to defeat the German pilots of Messerschmitt Me 262s, the first jet fighters. Discrimination of these men was present during the request of the American people to accompany them in their bombing.
Tumblr media
The story of the Tuskegee men was already portrayed before in a HBO movie in 1995 which was based almost on real information on training the racist South during the 1940s. It was not really historical-based but it was action heavy. There were scenes in the film which were emphasized especially in parts like giving brief commands used in bureaucratic infighting. George Lucas, the producer of the movie was fond of combat dogfight and his inspiration was William Wellman's Oscar winner "Wings" (1927). The “Wings” was the basis of making Star Wars’ aerial combat.
Tumblr media
Lucas said that his father had a friend who viewed his movie and said that “in immediate reality, every mission could very like be the last”. Lucas also said that he could feel the pilots’ nervousness and fear as they took off but instead, he felt the opposite from the pilots- pride, patriotism, and zeal. The late night conversations
During the premiere of the film, Lucas mentioned in “The Daily Show” that the film was not dependent on Hollywood. He financed the film himself because Hollywood does not want to spend large amounts on a film with all-black casts. It was reported that this film was developed by Lucas for 23 years and it came out very successful all throughout. The aerial scenes used very quick pacing whenever they are to give commands to their fellow air-fighters. The sounds used in the pyrotechnics, weapons, and crashes of the planes were almost like you were in the scene. Camera shots of the aerial combat were really awesome. As a film based on real events, I can say that this film hit the spot as a historical-action movie as it views action-heavy scenes which can be compared to actual events which happen during a war.

Non Stop (2014)
This is a 2014 thriller-action movie by director Jaume Collet-Serra starring Liam Neeson, as Bill Marks in the film, a Federal Air Marshall who is on a plane and is faced with an unknown passenger who is threatening him by sending him messages asking for a deal of $150 million dollars and which if not complied within twenty minutes, a passenger is will be killed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Text messages flashed on the screen made it kind of thrilling and suspense-filled with the use of high-tech cellphones. By putting on screen these text messages, we can see that the film with many people in one setting which will be hard for the viewers to identify who is sending the messages. The most bothering part is wherein a passenger with a phone got through the security checks. The rules on board a plane say that you should not use your phones as soon as you leave the gate since this might be the cause of unwanted trouble in the plane. Viewing of passengers with a close up one by one capturing their moment on the screen and shifting from one person to another which portrays the possibility of being a suspect makes the film a very interesting guessing game which we will make you guess, guess, and guess.
Tumblr media
Faces which appeared to be suspicious were being targeted by Bill but it seems that the most unexpected face might appear as the mastermind behind the major threat which occurred in the plane. By changing focus from  Nancy Hoffman (Michelle Dockery), to the flight attendant, Jen Summers (Julian Moore), a passenger seated beside Bill, Charles Wheeler, a bankruptcy attorney, Austin Reilly (Corey Stoll), a NYPD officer, a muslim doctor and a black computer specialist, the film will make the viewer think and  think who is the main culprit behind the death threat of passengers.  The director made a very good job to make the suspect unpredictable through changing camera focus. The film all throughout is excellent especially the way tension was built in which was well executed because in every scene. There were no exact predictions made because every scene was made unpredictable. I rate this as a 5-star film because of its concept of reality that really relates to what is happening in our society and it will worth watching.
