Seen on TV | Vu à la télé ► a Joker one shot
↳ ships [(kind of) Subway woman/Joker] ↳ warning [Rated M for sensitive subjects, violence and sexual content.] ↳ additional tags [One shot, Anonymity, Alternative Perspective, Madness, Canon-Typical Violence, Dream Sex, Lot of violent clowns, Own translation from French (sorry for the mistakes).]
The subway girl looked at the TV again. After one moment of suspense, a man agreed to appear, as colorful as the opening curtain. His raspberry-colored suit was testing the capacities of cameras, torturing the saturation point of screens. She held tight to her cigarette while the guest chucked his own, still dancing, free and confident. A thousand of guys also drew on their face a bright large smile and surrounded their eyes with geometric shapes, bringing in opposition red eyebrows and stylized tears, but this man has a long face, a skinny corpulence and an ecstatic smile. The same of the subway clown. However, this one on screen was moving with such panache, such pride she convinced herself he was another person. That Joker was certainly some new dubious humorist, taking advantage of the riot to drag all the spotlights toward his painted face. “Holy shit.” Her roommate laughed when the guest grabbed little Dr. Sally and compelled her a long kiss. “If Dr. Sally never gave a clown a blow job, at least she’s kissing one!” In her laugh, she released a puff of tobacco. When he sat down, Joker’s gaze met viewer’s one, and it showed how the triangle under his left eye stretched. Did he cry before he came on set? She felt uneasy: the thought of a clown crying was as frightening as the one of a clown committing a triple-murder.

We love on Arthur and we love on Joker, but... you know what else mesmerized me? What else makes me shiver every time? Killer Arthur on the subway. He's so beautiful and captivating, so hypnotic.
He fascinates me a lot because I think it’s the exact moment when Arthur, Carnival and Joker are blended together and coexist. They coexist in the whole movie, of course, but there's something in this scene, something in his look, in him... I can't explain it. There is just something in him, in his messy curls, in his make up that left me out of word, a sort of haunted and ghostly beauty that I'd love to drink in as much as humanly possible and impossible.
There’s Arthur, dark hair, his insecurity, heavy shoes, his nervous smile and the sweet and kind eyes when he stare the way those guys behave with the woman and understands she's uncomfortable with them. There’s Carnival, his wig, his card, his signature makeup, his painful laugh and the need to be able to defend himself when he starts to get beaten. And there’s Joker, his gun and a force which is brought out in his wholeness when he shoots the third man not for defense like the other two, but for revenge.
There's Joker who takes over and kills these guys with what's gonna be Joker's makeup, but in that moment still has not been completed, it's still of someone else, of another shade of him. The Carnival makeup whose only difference that separates it from the Joker’s one is a black line around his painted red smile. A black line that borders, limits forcing him to stop, to contain himself.
Joker takes off this black line, he set the red smile free, gives it and himself freedom and in doing so allows himself to experience his own feelings and deal with what he previously feared by wearing the makeup of another person. Arthur in the subway scene processes his being questioning who he is, and driven by fear and at the same time also by bravery he crosses the black line of his red smile with a big jump and allows himself to cross through Arthur, through Carnival and through Joker, reaching out this new shade of his completely at the end of the day.
In a single scene he's traveling and blending these three shades he's made of through a irregular dance, with no rhythm, with robotic and angular moves, yet is a dance that ironically has never been more free, smooth and revealing than this one.
It's fascinating and so magnetic also the fact that these three shades in him are never outlined and concrete, we never see a shade without see also the other two. They coexist all the time, for the whole movie, and is never as evident as it is in the subway scene. Joker’s action of killing is totally opposed to Arthur's gentle looks, innocence and kindness that he has right in this exact scene after he realizes what he's just done. The Killer who dances, the killer who kisses Sophie, able to feel something else other than anger.
I think that being so bewitching and hypnotizing is that we, as human being, are always accustomed to recognizing a person either as a victim or as a killer, but Arthur forces us to see both the victim and the killer coexist within him all the time, let us questioning our morality and make sure that what’s right coexist with what’s wrong. He confused us, he disorients us, yet at the same time he also shows us the way as a compass pointing north.
"All of you, the system that knows so much, you decide what's right or wrong the same way that you decide what's funny or not."
That’s why we love him, that’s why so many people are still here in spite of everything: because we’ve noticed that the victim and the killer coexist within him. We distinguish them, of course, but we also see their fusion, and we understand why these shades of him have been mixed in the first place.
And we love him as a single person because these shades are just... shades. He's one and only single person and we love him and all that he is made of, including each of his shade.
We love both the victim and the killer, the right and the wrong, better or worse. That's why it’s such a strong feeling. When we love both good and evil of a person then we know them at their best and at their worst, and it's right there that is hidden a bond difficult to break.
We don't love only Arthur, only Carnival or only Joker. We love a single soul who can be called by three different names. The reason that leads us to choose a name over another doesn't matter as long as we keep loving the same hurt and unloved man.
