Variables. The endless sea is wrought with them. It calls to the imagination a parallelism, an organization; in one universe, feet wait dutifully before the crosswalk. In one, they turn right. In one, they turn left. In another, they step out just a moment too early-

Data like that is easy to calculate, at first.. until you begin to consider additional factors. A passerby bumping into those feet, another pushing, a distracting insect, a phone call, the caller wanting to chat, or needing assistance, or being distracted themselves, or so on--

So on and so on, however-- No..

These variables... Comforts. Whether in the form of 'universal randomness', or the notion of 'another universe' -- Comforts, though they mean little. 'X' has been decided, in this universe.

Call it a 'scientific breakthrough', or call it a 'miracle' -- To plead with death and negotiate a few years of favor... is itself something incredible. And something very strange.

She was dead when I met her, yet here he is, rationing out the variables, debating the validity of each, trying to convince himself that something somewhere must be miscalculated -- As if they hadn't destroyed and rewrote the entire equation years ago.

The universe went on to solve it, as it should, as it would. Yet here he is..

These redundant calculations-- He's thinking about it all wrong. To take knee and reconsider it again, to go back to the very beginning--

Of certain objects, yes, he could be called overprotective.

Of certain people, no.

They're people, as he sees it. His levels of concern fluctuated with age, naturally, but now-- See, the only people it might be argued that he 'cares' about are smart enough to manage themselves. If they do fail, that's on them; He'll stitch them back together and scold them about it later.

He isn't fully unconcerned, but it certainly doesn't keep him up at night.

That's the place he comes from, regarding personhood, however.. Akane's state of being... - it leaves her better armed than a normal girl her age. Yes, he has even less reason to be concerned, in that regard-- However, her 'state of being' interacting with the normal world... For a number of reasons, it is something he'd much rather be in a position to at least watch... There's too many variables unaccounted for for him to be as easy about her absence as he might otherwise be. 'Overprotective' isn't the word at all, but there is something. ... He isn't happy about her leaving.

For whatever it's worth, and to however many people's surprise, he isn't heartless. He has a moral compass, and one decently calibrated- and while minor injustices don't often bat his eye, he might even take part in some, if there's a 'greater good' in his mind, any grander ones in his vicinity are things he'd intervene in, if able to.

Call it what you will. His vicinity is very small, and within it he has steep tunnel vision. It paves for a lot of ill-mannered traits... But he chose a life as a back-alley doctor, sharing his home with a couple kids even, rather than selling his research to the highest bidder. One could say there's something in that.

Religions, myths, beliefs, he has never cared for them. Never cared to place his faith in things he couldn't see with his own eyes. No, to understand the truth behind it all-- To understand it fully, he will eventually die himself. He's at perfect peace with that.. Perhaps one could even call it excited.

Although, he would like to achieve satisfaction in this 'life' first... As anyone would. There are questions he still hopes to find answers for while he has the eyes to see them.
