the part in the meson scene where she confronts him about her office and he's like 'you were the one who wanted to stay' and she says 'only because i wanted to be closer to you' is an accidental confession on her part and he doesn't realize it. her rejecting olarte's office was way before anything happened between them and he doesn't pick up on it bc his mind is too busy thinking about betty's recent behavior and not taking in what she's actually saying.

February reads
The Neighbour Favor by Kristina Forest. I really liked this one, the leads were charming and I could relate to them, well, more of her than him. The premise was interesting and i like the author's writing style.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of the things that deserves more credit for in YSBLF is the visual storytelling and how the scenes are directed in a way that reflects the storytelling.
In the above scene, at first viewing nothing in particular jumps out. We've seen many scenes with this exact setup, the board members around the table, Armando all nervous and anxious about concealing the company's financial status, Daniel suspicious about everything, Marcela being annoyed, Betty coming in to save Armando with more lies, blah blah... What's also quite normal is Armando pulls a seat for Betty next to him, he does it as naturally as putting on his cologne.
Look in particular at when Armando pushes his chair to the side and pulls up a new chair. Betty comes to sit on the chair that he was sitting on.
What happened that day was the finalization of the embargo with Betty's lawyer and the court secretary making their rounds through Ecomoda to take inventory of the machines, materials, etc. When Armando signs the embargo papers, he, as a matter of fact, has handed Betty the control of the company.
The scene visually shows that the 'seat of power' has moved from Armando to Betty, which i think is pretty neat.

@ladysophiebeckett
Oh it's just 1-5 based on that scale?
Ok then, I'll give Eve's book a 3 and Chloe's book a 4. Must say I quite enjoyed the author's writing style in both books.
Ngl, Eve x Jacob reminded me of a bit of b x a, it was the boss-employee trope and the way he admires how she confidently manages her work.
Redford Morgan > Jacob Wayne
Chloe Sophia > Eve Antonia
Button > Sunshine
My two January books. The first and third book of the Brown sisters series by Talia Hibbert. I skipped the 2nd book but will come back to it in the future.
The above is my preference in terms of main character likability and relatability, maybe bc Chloe and Red were closer to my age and their issues were easier for me to understand.
Not gonna rate them bc I frankly don't know how to.

When Emma falls apart it's when she's alone
She takes on the pain and bears it on her own
Cause when Emma falls in love, she's in it for keeps
She won't walk away unless she knows she absolutely has to leave

yeah armando lost the company like 6 months in and his goals were slightly unrealistic (bc he’s not an economist and therefore can’t do business math) but roberto making it a family competition between his son and his not-son and then making his son basically an interim president and saying ‘we’ll see how u do one year from now before giving u the job permanently and if u don’t make these goals then the board (so me, ur father) will give the job to my not-son’. don’t treat ur so called family business as a joke and then maybe ur son won’t go crazy and commit financial fraud.

im not a financial person either but the simple math was armando's proposal made it seem like there would be high profits (utilidad neta). For high profits, you gotta keep revenue high and costs low. That's why they chose to lower the production cost by cutting down to lower quality material. All those talks about 70/30 materials and 50/50 materials when they used to do 100% materials and cheaper buttons and accessories contributed to cost. But when they lowered the cost (and therefore, quality in the first collection), there were fewer sales, therefore less revenue, and of course no profit (and more customer complaints on the low-grade materials). They ended up taking more loans coz they had to pay the suppliers and other operation costs. Keep in mind the loans needed to be paid and they accumulated interest as well. And this snowballed to the second collection, where they knew they had to keep the quality of materials high and got tangled in the panama thing where they lost more money and the materials. They could not keep the company as it was because they had no money. The more debt they own the banks would mean the banks could take legal action. So the fake company did two things essentially, 1) make money and therefore pay the suppliers and cover the production costs (including salary and shareholders checks) and 2) legally tell the banks that they were taking legal action over ecomoda, therefore the banks couldn't take legal action. It's quite a clever idea actually, in the midst of everything.
Betty girlies lets discuss something
so i'm no finance whiz, in fact i am TERRIBLE at math right like if i even SEE numbers i WILL burst out into tears and i sure as shit don't know nothing bout running a business but i'm just wondering, like the company was healthy, doing well, prosperous it just went downhill bc mr. presidente risked it all on account of some stupid goals etc etc we know but like.... they fudged numbers and balance sheets anyway wouldn't it have been better to just have the company going the way it was going but to keep the real info private and to just fake the info when needed???? could that have been possible????

My most unexpected foreshadowing in ysblf is on the day betty goes to the horse riding club to meet armando to sign some papers for the bank. He asks her to stay bc they are meeting the RagTela people. Back in the car, he confirms that she's now Assistant to the President (which sadly didn't come with a salary increase 🙁), no more his secretary.
They come back and betty tells the cuartel about the promotion and they are all so happy for her. Patricia walks in to the restroom and the cuartel, to spite her, tells patricia that betty is now her boss and she'll have to take orders from her. And patricia says, betty will have to die and be resurrected before she takes orders from betty. And of course that's what happens metaphorically when betty assumes the presidency.
It's so unexpected bc it's so out of context and so early on the show and it's just something one would say to someone they hate but in retrospect, it comes true metaphorically.
My most favorite foreshadowing is on the day Adriana Arboleda appears. Cata walks in to betty's office with some papers and notices betty feeling low. She invites her to the Picasso exhibition and betty says she's too busy with work and armando will kill her if she doesn't finish up the costing reports tonight. Cata foreshadows future events to say that if armando kills betty, he'll have to commit suicide bc it doesn't make sense for him to live anymore.
Of course that happens when betty reads the letter and later when armando has the fight in the bar when betty is in cartagena. But also, when armando speaks to dona julia after reading the diary, he says, he'll pay for all his deeds with his life and his life/future does not make sense without betty.
ysblf has layers upon layers of foreshadowing in it. what’s your favorite? mine is the foreshadowing of betty and armando’s physical separation, when he’s supposed to go to palm beach and says ‘usted me va hacer mucha falta’—yeah dude u have no idea.

@justbeenthinking that he tolerated amando and betty after their marriage and yet he still made mean remarks about them all the time (like implying they will eventually divorce cause he will cheat). also the fact that he asked to be sent on paid vacation after he tried to humiliate the cuartel (including inesita who he supposedly loves like a mother) is ????
acting like he was the one being wronged when he tried to hijack betty's marketing strategy and ruin the fashion show but she turned out to be right?
betty should have kicked him to the curb. i'm sure ecomoda could have found a more talented and nicer designer.

@justbeenthinking it's possible. but also i wonder, does he like pretty girls or just rich people? cause aura maria was gorgeous but he still called her ugly and treated her like crap just cause she was poor and unrefined. so i think if he has a bias against someone he will be mean to them no matter what. giving how he treated betty and armando (especially after their marriage) i have little hope he will be kind to their daughter. anyhow, now I'm even more curious to see the new series to see what the case will be 👀

that board meeting where they make betty president and they have to tell hugo's annoying ass and he starts throwing insults for no reason other than to be cruel, betty should have stood up and been like 'okay i'm not putting up with this, so figure it out or no deal'.
