seto kaiba with his newfound freedom decides that he hasnā€™t been to a legit school in so long so heā€™s adding that to his list of normal childhood things to catch up on, and then fast forward to waking up from a coma and heā€™s like well that sucked

ive read the argument that kaiba would stay in school to beat yuugi at grades, but i don't really think this squares. i think kaiba would see yuugi's "D+ SEE ME AFTER CLASS" on his math test and laugh his way to the administration office where he files his "i am dropping out of school and you won't stop me" paperwork and never steps foot in a high school classroom again.
like i think he went to high school as some kind of boring formality more than anything else. gozaburo seems to have had him in some kind of accelerated curriculum of languages, social studies, business management, and judging by DM, STEM as well (and being some kind of STEM prodigy just makes sense for him anyway, no matter the canon; he designed the duel disk!) so in the end he's just miles ahead of any high school curriculum regardless.
in addition, "beating yuugi at grades" is like... a perpendicular exaggeration of his competitive tendencies. first of all, he knows and acts like he is the smartest person in any room he walks into. he shows no signs of wanting to prove anything in that respect. he does not feel the need to prove he's smarter than yuugi because he already knows he is. second of all, "grades" is not the same as "duel monsters." grades are, in the end, a measure of how well you can take a test. Duel Monsters means something entirely different to kaiba--it is connection, passion, vehicles of emotion; it is rising to meet the challenge of someone else, through an antagonistic/responsive zero-sum card game, with your whole being. a grade is something you can earn by yourself--a solitary victory. someone else can also win at "grades" and it has nothing to do with you. duel monsters is something you have to play with someone else, with an outcome constructed via interactions with other people.
in other words: he dropped out of high school the end

Happy 8th Anniversary to the love of my life and my soulmate Seto KaibašŸ©µI canā€™t believe itā€™s already been that long, where did all the time go? I love him so much, words arenā€™t enough to describe my true feelings. Thank you for the amazing past 8 years, my nr. 1 duelistšŸ’™šŸŒŒ I got this stunning commission showing the true canon ending of the DSOD movie, where Kaiba returned safely from the afterlife to me and the moment we committed to each otheršŸ’™

also what im realizing as im making that yugi/kaiba-kun compilation is that seto frequently centers in on yugi and ignores everyone else
theres a few moments where someones standing in front of yugi a little bit or even says something before he does and kaiba is still like "yugi!" like okay seto i see you, i know what you are

Given his upbringing, itā€™s not a shocker heā€™s a walking ball of anxiety. I do believe heā€™d smoke as a coping mechanism.
Quick give him a motherfucking Newport before he blows up another island

Headcanon: What if Kaiba had found the Puzzle?
@bifca
Sorry for the delay. Ā It took me a while to come up with a headcanon.
Mokuba was with his brother when they found the box.
Seto Kaiba had taken over Gozaburoā€™s office along with his corporation. Ā Heā€™d moved in immediately and started cleaning house, his scowl growing deeper, more firmly etched into place with each file he opened. Ā Mokuba watched him in silence. His brother was too busy to talk and even when he wasnā€™t, he was distant, as though he had moved into a different time zone without leaving the room. Ā
Mokubaā€™s attention had wandered when he heard Kaibaā€™s sharp intake of breath.
ā€œNisama?ā€ he asked, turning his brotherā€™s title into a question.
Kaiba grunted. Ā He was leaning over a small box, poking at whatever was inside.
ā€œI found this thrown into the bottom of a drawer. Ā I wonder what Gozaburo wanted with it.ā€ Ā He held up a letter, read it and grunted again. Ā ā€œOne of his public relations gimmicks was funding an archeological dig. Ā I guess we put him off orphanages for good.ā€
Mokuba came over and peered inside the box. Ā ā€œAnd they gave him some sort of puzzle as a thank you? Ā It looks like gold, it must be valuableā€¦ but I never saw him play with anything beforeā€¦ well, except for chess. Ā I wonder what itā€™s supposed to be.ā€
Two pieces were stuck together. Ā The rest lay in a heap at the bottom of the box. Ā ā€œHe didnā€™t get far, at any rate.ā€ Ā Kaiba picked up the conjoined pieces and turned them over. Ā Theyā€™d been rammed together awkwardly. Ā Kaiba threw back his head and laughed. Ā ā€œHe only got two of them to stick and they donā€™t even belong together.ā€ Ā
Seto worked on them for a moment. Ā There was something satisfying about undoing his adoptive fatherā€™s handiwork, about the way the pieces sprang free.
ā€œThereā€™s something engraved on the inside of the lid,ā€ Mokuba said, tracing the hieroglyphs with his finger.
ā€œWhoever puts this puzzle together will be granted his deepest wish,ā€ Kaiba read slowly, wondering why he instantly knew what the unfamiliar shapes meant as though heā€™d breathed in the knowledge with the air. Ā ā€œThatā€™s stupid. Ā Wishes are for children.ā€ Ā Kaiba threw the pieces back in the box and slammed the lid. Ā But Mokuba noticed his brother kept the box on the top of his desk.
Over the next few days, Mokuba caught his brother twisting the pieces together after particularly difficult board meetings. Ā On the day that Kaiba Corporationā€™s weapons factories closed their doors, Kaiba managed to put the first two together. Ā More followed, matching each milestone in the new Kaiba Corporation that his brother was building. Ā
As as the puzzle came together Kaiba looked less haunted. Ā But that wasnā€™t enough for Mokuba. Ā His brother still didnā€™t look happy. He looked careworn and creased and defeated by his new responsibilities in a way that Gozaburo had never managed.
Then finally, months after theyā€™d found the box, the day came when there was only one piece left. Ā Mokuba looked at the almost completed puzzle. Ā It was easy to see that it was an upside-down pyramid now. Ā He couldnā€™t help but remember the words on the inside lid, the words his brother had discarded and forgotten.
ā€œCan I help you put in the last piece?ā€ Mokuba asked.
ā€œOf course,ā€ Kaiba answered with a smile. Ā ā€œI was waiting for you. Ā Itā€™s only right that we do it the same way we do everything else ā€“ as a team.ā€
As their fingers slid the last piece in, Mokuba closed his eyes and whispered, far too softly to be heard by his brother, ā€œPlease, all I want is for Nisama to find a friendā€¦. someone whoā€™ll look after him the way he does for me.ā€ Ā
Mokuba smiled as he heard the last piece click into place, as if the Puzzle itself, now gleaming in his brotherā€™s hands, had nodded in answer.

Do you think Prideshipping is one sided or does yami feels something for Kaiba ?
Head-canonically speaking, Kaiba has much more intense feelings for Atem than Atem does for Kaiba. This headcanon of mine is based on the canonical relationship between the two. Atem is pretty much the only genuine friend Kaiba has ever made--the only one who is "worthy" enough to be an archrival and friend, to be more specific. On the other hand, Atem makes numerous friends on his way to unlock his memory from his previous life. Kaiba has stacked a large number of eggs in one basket that is Atem, while Atem has expanded his network of friends along the way.
This "dedication gap" may have been resolved to some degree when Kaiba finally made his way to meet Atem in person in the afterlife at the end of the DSOD. Kaiba had certainly been among Atem's special friends, but still may well have been one among many until then. By paying this special visit to Atem's afterlife realm, Kaiba may have risen several notches in Atem's heart :-D

Of course he did the right thing.
There's no question about it, if he hadn't pulled that switch and shut down the test, his brother would have died.
But he still cant stop thinking about it.
Every time he closes his eyes, he sees Seto's face, contorted in pain, eyes blown wide, veins popping from the stress on his body and brain.
All he ever wanted was to see his brother smile again. Now that twisted expression of agony is burned into his mind.
Their head scientist had hesitated to pull the switch himself, even as Seto's vitals set off every alarm.
What if he hadn't been there?
Seto had been alone in his own personal lab when he'd rushed into Duel Links.
What if Mokuba hadn't called his brother when he had?
His chest hurts. Mokuba rolls onto his back, staring up at the ceiling.
It's okay, he tells himself. What matters is that Seto's okay--
Seto is okay, right?
He had given in to the pleading from Mokuba, Isono, and their head scientist and submitted to a physical, but Seto had promptly returned to his private lab after, only giving his brother some quick reassurance in passing.
Mokuba groans. The stillness of his massive bedroom suite feels suffocating. He slips out from under his heavy comforters and into some pajama pants. He tiptoes across the hall, only to hesitate outside Seto's door.
It's been so long since he's crawled into his brother's bed. He knows he's getting too old for such childish comforts, but tonight he needs to know that Seto's okay. To see his face at peace instead of--
Mokuba swallows thickly and raises a hand to tap quietly on the door.
No answer.
He must be sleeping, resting after the turmoil of the evening.
Mokuba turns the knob, entering his brother's room quietly and carefully, only to find it
empty.
His stomach sinks as he realizes. Despite nearly dying just hours ago, Seto's spending yet another night away in his private lab, locked to everyone, even his little brother. Of course. Just like every night since their trip to Egypt.
Really, what else had he expected?
For a moment, Mokuba considers calling his brother on the monitor in his lab, just to see his face and hear his voice. But he already interrupted Seto's precious research once. He doesn't want to push his luck doing so again, especially for something so pathetic.
Instead, he walks across the plush carpet of Seto's bedroom suite to the mini bar in the corner, hardly touched by the man it belongs to, underage himself. So, it won't be noticed if Mokuba takes a couple sips of something or other. Not much, just enough to quiet his brain and blur the memories of his brother's agonized expression. He hisses and shivers and gags at the taste, but still swallows it down, along with this awful evening.
He's careful to return the bottle exactly as it has been before, though several sips lighter, and returns to his own room to sleep it off. After all, he has to get up in the morning to run Kaiba Corporation so his brother can focus on his own, far more important projects.
As he crawls back into his own bed, alone, he reassures himself once again.
Of course he's doing the right thing.
