The world needs more wounded butch knights, grimly shouldering duty, wandering from lonely town to lonely town in the name of a saint no-one remembers, drinking in the darkest corners of a tavern, fighting with a shield in one hand and wielding a broken sword they cannot bear to replace in the other. The world has broken them upon it but still they keep going, accompanied only by their nameless horse, their impossible burden, the memory of the soft touch of the queen they love in a way that no knight should feel for their liege.

How to Apologize

I’ve seen several people be really awful at this lately, so I’d like to share some things I have myself learned the hard way about apologies.

Ultimately, all of these boil down to an apology being about the person you hurt, not about you.

Any part of the apology that is about making yourself feel better about what you did? Not an apology.

The word “if” should never appear. “I’m sorry if…” No. When you are apologizing, you know you fucked up—no ifs about it.

Acknowledge that you fucked up. Focus on your actions and your recognition of how they hurt the other person. “I am sorry I said that hurtful thing to you,” not “I am sorry you were hurt.”

Explanations are sometimes okay. Explanations are about helping reassure the person you hurt that you have figured out (a) why you fucked up this time and (b) how you are going to avoid doing it again in the future. Typically, an explanation will be placed at the beginning of an apology, before the actual “sorry” part, and it will explicitly acknowledge that the understanding does not excuse the action requiring an apology.

Excuses are never okay. Excuses are about helping yourself feel like not such a bad person and avoiding dealing with the root cause of why you behaved the way you did. Typically, an excuse will be placed at the end of an apology, after the actual “sorry” part, and it will carry the connotation that the person you hurt should be less mad at you, because your actions were for some reason out of your control.

If your apology goes something like “I’m sorry, but…” strike the “but” and everything after it.

Don’t bemoan what a horrible person you are. This is a manipulative tactic to get the other person to immediately forgive you. Remember, the apology is about the person you hurt, not about yourself. When you put the person you’re apologizing to in the position of having to comfort and reassure you, you’re shifting the focus off where it should be.

The person you are apologizing to does not have to accept your apology: graciously or otherwise. If you find yourself getting mad that they’re not accepting your apology—or not accepting it in the way you’d hoped—remember that the apology is for them, not for you.

NB: There will be times when you need to make a passive-aggressive non-apology in order to placate someone who doesn’t actually deserve an apology. In those cases, you may gleefully break any/all of these rules. (It’s exactly the sort of situation where “I’m sorry you feel that way” is actually justified.)
