Another Round of Samsara (5115 words) by thesavagesabretooth
One-Shot | Status: Complete Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Summary: A few days after Apollo decides to stay in Kura'in he and Nahyuta finally get a chance to talk alone, and say all the things that they've both been feeling. The red string of fate, broken, and re-joined.
-
Apollo was collapsed exhausted on the couch. The office was sparkling clean by now– he'd finished the home stretch all by himself after three days of work with the help of Datz and a few of the dragons. His shoulders ached, and his hair was saturated with sweat and dust. The waste bin in the corner was full of dirty rags.
But it was finally livable.
His convalescence was short lived, however…as the gentle knock at his door was soon joined by the ring of the bell hung outside. He had a visitor, or more likely–a customer.
Already? He thought wearily as he shot up from the couch. He winced as his sore feet hit the ground and he stumbled over to answer the door.
Of course already– he was the only lawyer in the country.
"Hel–lo!" he blinked as he swung the door opened and saw the unexpected visitor.
Nahyuta stood like a divine presence in the doorway, his lacy shawl blowing in the chill mountain air as his fingers rested upon the cord of the bell.
Regent of the crown, and rival prosecutor Nahyuta…his foster brother…smiled at him with a close of his eyes as he gave the bell another ring.
“Hello, Mr. Justice.”
"Prosecutor Sadmadhi," Apollo drawled in response to the greeting. "Is there a reason you're ringing my bell when i'm already here at the door?"
“I’m astounded it’s working,” he responded with a wave of his hand. “It’s been damaged for years, after all. I’m sure in no time you’ll find yourself absolutely inundated with its sound at all hours.”
Apollo chuckled and shook his head. "Okay, that's a good reason, actually. Datz had a guy out here with a blowtorch to fix it. He kept looking over his shoulder like the cops were going to bring him in."
He reached up, and gave the bell a jingle himself.
It rang– high and clear in the air of Khura’in, and he saw Nahyuta smile almost despite himself.
“Ah, Datz. Always going to be feeling the criminal, I'm afraid. Between you and I, I think he just likes the thrill of it.” He closed his eyes, serene and perfectly composed as he held his fingers in a silent prayer. “I’ve finally had a moment free from the palace, and thought I might check in.”
"I'm surprised you could slip away so soon! Come on in. We even got the burners working– I can make some tea if you want."
“It’s a miracle from the Holy Mother.” Nahyuta’s smile was wry, but Apollo’s keen eyes could see the crease of exhaustion at the corner of the man’s eyes and in the sag of his shoulders. “Her Benevolence been asked to take some lessons in etiquette, and there’s been a brief…a brief lull in the frenzy. Enough for me to slip away for some tea.”
He eased his way inside with a glance over his shoulder as if palace attendants might appear out of the woodwork at any moment to drag him back.
Apollo closed the door firmly behind him, as if to shut out the possibility that he'd suddenly be retrieved.
"Sounds like you've been as busy as I have," he said, looking over his shoulder as he limped hisway over to the stove. "Have a seat and I'll get us some tea."
Nahyuta didn’t sit, instead the tall monk drifted along behind him with a low hum.
“the work is unceasing…it’s really no surprise after Ga’ran’s regime. Her Detestable Tyranny left quite the mess for me to pick up personally, it seems.” He sighed low. “you’re limping by the by. Did you step upon a nail? Am I going to have to see you off to the Twilight Realm already?”
"Huh?" Apollo flushed feeling Nahyuta standing so close behind him. He turned, as his limp was pointed out– and it made him think about how much his feet hurt. "No, I didn't step on anything. I've just been on my feet for like three days. I'm uh, used to an office job…"
Why was that so embarrassing to admit? Being a lawyer was supposed to be an office job.
The taller man leaned over, his braid sliding over his shoulder to frame his face as he inspected Apollo.
“Allow me to fetch the tea then.” He chuckled into his hand “I had gotten the impression from Ms. Cykes that lawyers in America were surprisingly athletic. Does the job really involve more sitting about than she implied?”
"Athena's not a good example," Apollo said. "There's something deeply wrong with her. Anyway– I'm sure you've been running around too, it's not too hard for me to make tea…"
He bit his lip. He did want to sit down, but it was rude to have a guest make tea. Then again, Nahyuta was someone close to him– or who had been close to him. There was still such a divide of years between them.
“Keeping up with Her Benevolence is a full time job,” he agreed thoughtfully “...If you insist, I’ll sit, red pepper.”
He smiled, the barest ghost of a thing as he used the courtroom ‘nickname’ he’d assigned Apollo during their struggles a mere few weeks ago.
"At least you've dropped the putrid part," he chuckled. He filled the kettle with water, and put it on the burner, bustling around to get a couple of mugs, and put some tea leaves from the new jar into the little infusers. "But I still don't have a good nickname for you."
Nahyuta dropped himself into one of the familiar old chairs, his legs crossing delicately as he watched Apollo bustle about.
“Well. You’ve freshened up a bit. You did help free me of my aunt’s control, after all. I think that’s worth a change in status.”
"Improved my karma a little bit?" he teased back. He turned and leaned toward Nahyuta, resting his forearms behind him on the counter.
It had been so bizarre to see him again, half a world away in LA. He'd thought at the time that it was being out of place and in the city that made him look so ethereal– but it was still striking seeing him even here in Kura'in. He'd always been pretty, even when they were kids, but…
Nahyuta brushed a lock of his pale and silvery hair over his ear, watching him through his heavy lashed eyes. “It’s a miracle from the Holy Mother, truly. Maybe in time you’ll even work your way up to a life as a waarba’d, with that bright plumage of yours.”
"You're so funny, aren't you, 'Yuta?" he huffed, and for a moment he did feel like a bird pinning his feathers. He smoothed his hair, and then, as the kettle began to steam, he poured water into their cups. "What about you? Or is this your last reincarnation, and I'll have to run around squawking in samsara without you?"
“I’ve been told I have a certain sense of humor. Usually while being pelted by snackoos by Detective Skye, or whacked by my dear younger sister.” he laughed, clear like the bell outside the office.
“Would you miss me?” he asked after a moment.
"Well– yeah!" Apollo pouted. "Not that I'd know what I was missing as a stupid bird. I'd probably just think I was hungry or something."
He watched the steam rise from the cups as he let the tea steep.
“The waarba’d is smarter than you give it credit for…and dare I say, just as loud as you.” He closed his eyes for a long moment as he spoke again, “but you don’t have to worry. I’ve hardly been perfect this life. I’m afraid I may have stacked a few extra reincarnations up before me while in Ga’ran’s service.”
He cracked an eye open “we may get the chance to squawk in samsara together.”
"Oh really? Are you saying you're going to be a bird too? Because here I assumed you were going to be a king and I'd live in your menagerie." Apollo chuckled at the silly, sarcastic idea, and took the tea infusers out of their cups. He carefully picked the mugs up, and picked his way across the floor back over to where Nahyuta was sitting.
“Ah, good point.” Nahyuta said with a low chuckle as he shifted to sit a little straighter. “I could be reincarnated as the king of Los Angeles.”
Apollo laughed as he set the cups down on the table beside the couch.
"I shudder to think what must happen so that there's a king of LA, 'Yuta. But if anybody can do it, I bet it's you."
“And you can be my loyal bird." Delicately , he picked up the mug. “but I’d like to think that reincarnation is a long way away…after all. I’ve only just gotten to see you…and only just…”
He trailed off, sipping his tea as his brow knit.
Apollo sat down on the couch near him, but not quite touching him, and picked up his own mug. He wasn't sure what Nahyuta was going to say, exactly, but he echoed the sentiment.
"Yeah… I mean…"
Nahyuta sipped his tea. “Ga’ran. Aunt Ga’ran and her regime necessitated a harder stance for the protection of Rayfa from father’s perceived crimes. For this, I’m afraid I’ve allowed myself to harden my heart. I know it made our reunion a little…difficult.”
Apollo felt the hot tea warming his fingers, and the steam wash over his face, heating it.
"I mean, I won't say that's not true. It's… not what I was expecting when I saw you again."
He felt the other man shift, even the slight weight of his body making the old and battered couch creak as he leaned against the back to face Apollo.
“What were you expecting? You were gone a long while, Apollo. Plenty of time for the imagination to run rampant.”
Apollo shifted as well, careful and aware of his body as he did so. His leg didn't quite brush Nahyuta's.
"I don't know," he said. It wasn't exactly true, but on the other hand… "I honestly never expected to see you again…"
Nahyuta nodded slowly. “I admit I didn’t either. When father sent you away, I’d vowed to change the legal system from inside…hoping, maybe, that it’d allow him to bring you home sooner. When that backfired, I..” he waved his fingers around his mug with a furrow of his ethereal brow, “was forced to learn to give up and let it go.”
Apollo set his mug down forcefully, some of the tea splashing out of it. He put his hand on Nahyuta's hand.
"Well, I want you to unlearn that, okay?" he flushed a little, embarrassed by his own action. "I mean, I know you've already started…"
Nahyuta’s ordinarily tranquil stare widened in genuine surprise, and the barest trace of a flush crossed his face as his delicate fingers curled under Apollo’s.
“Ah…” the cup warmed both their hands from his palm as he nodded. “it’s a process…but I’ll try. For you.”
He smiled “Rayfa has asked the same of me. I suppose holding tight to a value I don’t even want to believe in when it’d disappoint the both of you is a little silly.”
"I'll say it's more than silly." Apollo nodded. His hand stayed rested on Nahyuta's for a moment, and he was painfully aware of the contact between them. Was it the first time he'd touched him since they'd met again? They used to be all over one another, as kids… He slowly eased his hand away with a smile. "but I'm glad you're not going to stick to it out of pride or something…"
Nayuta’s tattooed hand shifted to touch his wrist for a moment as he shifted to pull his hand away, just over the bracelet he’d always worn. The touch lingered for a moment before returned his hand to the cup, holding it between each hand.
“If I were to allow myself to be driven by pride, Apollo, I’d only be stacking lowlier reincarnations on myself. It’s not exactly considered a Khurainese virtue.” He drawled almost playfully. “Are you trying to get me on the same vine as you, red pepper?”
"Maybe I'd feel better if we were growing together," Apollo said, sticking out his tongue at him. It was just silly banter, but he felt a sting of embarrassment when it came out of his mouth.
Nahyuta placed his fingers upon his chest, just barely touching the prayer beads he always wore. taking a long sip of his tea before he lowered it with an amused chuckle.
“Growing together, hm?” he peered at him through the steam from his cup, smiling serenely as ever. “As loath as I am to ever be a pepper, Apollo, I find myself agreeing. It’s been a long time since we’ve grown together, after all. This office, that ridiculous face, has a way of making one almost nostalgic.”
"I was thinking the same thing," he murmured, glancing down at his tea and taking a quiet sip. "I missed you, you know. I think besides the weather, and the river, you were the thing I missed most about being here."
Nahyuta’s fingers twirled around the string of his prayer beads in a gentler gesture than all the times he’d grabbed them in frustration during a trial.
“The river and the weather…and I,” he mused with a rub of the beads “you thought of me often out there in America?”
He nodded, difficult as it was to admit. "All the time at first. And then after a while I tried not to think about you at all. But even then… you were a big part of my life, 'Yuta."
Nahyuta ducked his head.
“As you were a big part of my own, ‘pollo. We were so close back in that mountain shack, after all. When you left, I often wondered what you were doing out there in the United States. If you were well. What you would think when you saw me again.” He glanced to the side as he murmured. “you were one of the driving forces behind my desire to change things, before it became an impossibility.”
Apollo took another sip of his tea. "I almost feel like I should say I'm sorry for that, then…"
“Hardly your fault,” Nahyuta held his hand up, and Apollo could see the mark of the dragon upon his palm. “You were far away, where I couldn’t reach you…but not of your own doing. So I could only do what I could to make a home you could return to.”
His expression was serious as he continued.
“besides. It isn’t as if I didn’t make the attempt…when I’d heard you’d become a lawyer, a defense attorney, I’d..” The man had become an international prosecutor, traveling the world. “I’d intended to look for you.”
Apollo felt a lump growing in his throat. "I guess we're lucky things happened the way that did, when they did, 'Yuta. Otherwise, I'd probably have tried to keep you in LA…"
He reached out, and he brushed his two fingers against Nahyuta's tattooed palm.
Nahyuta shivered almost imperceptibly, his finger curling down to rest against the tips of Apollo’s fingers.
“Which is something I simply couldn’t do…not while Princess Rayfa’s future was in danger.”
"I know," he nodded. He pushed his fingers up into the spaces between Nahyuta's and closed them, squeezing his hand. "I'm glad we could save her. And you. And make a start at fixing this mess we were left with."
“What a mess it is, hm?” his fingers squeezed around Apollo’s hand in turn, and he leaned into some of the space between them. “Fate’s given us some heavy roles to play, Apollo. You, in father’s old office…me, regent of a struggling Kingdom. The both of us, agents of reform within the Holy Mother’s kingdom.”
"Agents of reform, chosen by fate," Apollo laughed, looking away while he still held Nahyuta's hand. "You sure know how to make it sound romantic, instead of just…"
Just miserable, brutal work that wouldn't be finished in their lifetimes.
“Just another difficult job that we cannot see the end of from where we stand?” he asked, thumb rubbing against the edge of his palm. “...I’m afraid I’m rather used to that sort of thing, Apollo. And as a monk, it’s my duty to find the beauty in the Holy Mother’s gifts.”
Apollo chuckled softly, the pads of his fingers brushing Nahyuta's knuckles. "You were always better at seeing the beauty in things than me. I just get angry."
“I did notice that. Your already loud voice only gets louder by some fell miracle” he said as a trace of a smirk graced his lips.
Apollo laughed bashfully, "Actually, I've been practicing that. It's an american law tradition to shout in court, so I have to make sure my voice doesn't break."
“....a legal tradition to shout in court? What kind of madness does the American court system operate on? Is that why the panda was constantly bellowing ‘silence’ any time I pointed out the obvious contradictions in Miss Cykes defense?”
Apollo's snorted. "Yeah, mostly. Although in his case he has his own reasons, too. But yeah. It's a tradition to shout 'Objection' as loud as you can when interrupting the opposition. Don't ask me where it got started, I have no idea."
His fingers were still entwined with Nahyuta's and he casually and slowly pulled it back and forth with his like a metronome.
“Justice through brute force, I suppose.” he tutted his tongue, eyes following the movement of their hands. “Interesting. Maybe I should work on my own interjections a little more. Was I loud enough?”
He chuckled. "I'll admit, that wasn't exactly what I was focused on when we faced each other in court. I didn't notice you being too quiet at least."
“And what were you focused on?” Nahyuta asked with a low chuckle, “simply the confusion of an unexpected reunion?”
"Yeah, mostly," he nodded. "It was so different. I hadn't seen you in years and years– not since we were kids. You changed so much, but I still recognized you. Even if it was funny to see you all robed up instead of running around without a shirt on."
Nahyuta flushed visibly for once, laughing with a bounce of his shoulders.
“I think it’d cause a stir if I showed up in your courts without my robes, Apollo. I don’t think the witnesses would be able to take it.” He smirked again “...you changed a lot too. Despite your voice and those antennae of yours, you’ve grown a lot.”
Apollo bobbed his head bashfully. "You really think so? I guess it's probably true. A lot has happened, and I was so far away. In a whole different world…"
“A very different world,” Nahyuta hummed as his fingers tightened around his, “and a different path. You found a number of people who seem to care for you very much.”
Apollo squeezed his hand tightly. "Maybe. But… I've lost people, too. And that makes it really… really important that I kind of feel like I got back somebody I lost a long time ago.
Nahyuta’s eyes closed for a moment, as his fingers held Apollo’s hand tight, “You have gotten someone back, and I have as well…I think we’ve lost far too much already, Apollo. I don’t dare lose you again now. Call it an excess of earthly attachment, if you’d like.”
"Maybe that's why you're not escaping samsara just yet," he teased. He found himself scooting a little closer to Nahyuta– their legs brushing together.
“I knew there was a fatal flaw in my piety somewhere.” he tutted his tongue. He didn’t move away, his leg brushing subtly against the side of Apollo’s. “I guess that means you’ll be stuck with me for a few more lifetimes.”
"A few more might be enough, if we get the most out of them." Apollo bit his lip, and put down his tea, scooting closer still. When they were kids, they'd used to sit in each others laps all the time. He wondered if that was something Nahyuta would still like– or if he'd outgrown it.
Nahyuta’s hand moved, and instead of gently pushing him away, he tugged him a little closer.
“The Holy Mother wouldn’t fault us for that, don’t you think?”
Apollo rubbed his neck with a little smile. "You'd be the expert on that, so, if you say so I believe you…"
His mouth felt dry, and suddenly he was overcome with a wave of emotions he could put names to. All the tension, and the exhaustion, and the insanity of the past days breaking through the walls of his emotional dam all at once.
He clambered his way quickly into Nahyuta's lap and put his arms around his shoulders like when they were little, pressing his face against his shoulder as his eyes stung with tears.
Nahyuta held him tight, his own arms wrapped around his torso in a firm hug as he took a quiet intake of breath that Apollo could feel through the slight tremor of his shoulders.
“It’s been a long time, after all..'
Apollo squeezed him tightly, shivering in Nahyuta's grasp. He tried to keep himself together, but a few hot tears still squeezed their way past his defenses to bloom on the fabric of Nahyuta's pretty robes.
"I missed you so much." His breathy words were muffled by his mouth pressed up against his arm.
Nahyuta’s arms tightened around him.
“I missed you too, Apollo.” he murmured as his head rested atop Apollo’s. His braid draped over his shoulder as he drew him closer. “More than words can impart. When you were gone you’d taken a piece of me with you.”
Apollo sat up a little and took one arm away to wipe his face with it, the other still clinging tightly to the other man. He looked up at him earnestly.
"When we met again, I started to think that you'd grown to hate me…"
Nahyuta met his eyes with a soft and ephemeral sigh.
“It was my role in the world. The cold-hearted prosecutor of the sinful accused.” His fingers rested against the small of his back “and it stung to see you, having seemingly forgotten me and standing resolute in service of the innocent.”
Apollo swallowed thickly, and put his fingers against Nahyuta's smooth, beautiful face.
"I could never forget you. Even with everything. I just didn't know… how to approach you."
Nahyuta looked down at him, his arms tightening against him “I didn’t make it easy for you, either.”
"You didn't," he said, shaking his head. He squirmed upward on the taller man's lap, until they were just about nose to nose. "But even if it wasn't easy– I wasn't going to let you go a second time."
Nahyuta’s long lashed eyes blinked…and Apollo could swear he could see the trace of tears at the edges.
“And here we are. Do you plan to hold tight this time? To this earthly attachment, I mean.”
"Yeah," he breathed raggedly, and a pained smile pulled across his face as the tears beaded again in his own eyes."Even if it means I come back as a fucking red pepper, like you keep saying. I'm not letting you go. You're the reason I'm not in LA right now. Not Dhurke. Not Kura'in's future. You."
Nahyuta blinked quickly..and the smile that crossed his face was the same that he’d seen back by the rushing river in the mountains.
“You honor me, Apollo…” he began, “I’ll have to ensure it was the right decision.”
Apollo cocked his head a little, still almost nose to nose with Nahyuta's beautiful, porcelain perfect face.
"Yeah?"
The tip of Nahyuta’s nose poked against his “If I’m the reason you stayed? Certainly.”
Apollo's heart was thumping heavily in his chest as he clung to Nahyuta, sprawled in his lap, tears in both their eyes. A thousand things were going through his mind, calculations and what ifs.
But if there was one thing that being a lawyer had taught him, if was that if you hesitated– then it was all over.
He sniffed, and stopped hesitating.
He pulled himself up, and dared to press his lips to Nahyuta's, his arm wrapped around his shoulders.
Nayhuta’s grip against him firmed, pulling him practically to his chest as he kissed him back. The kiss– unlike most everything else Nahyuta seemed to do– was inexpert. Hesitant at first before he allowed the tightly buttoned self control to slip enough for him to lean into the kiss.
Apollo didn't mind. It was a beautiful reminder of Nahyuta's humanity. That no matter how beautiful and elusive and ethereal he was, here he was in his arms, and he could hold him and touch him and be close to him.
Apollo took over the kiss, teary-eyed eager– more eager than ever when Nahyuta's first response wasn't to pull away but to kiss back. He kissed Nahyuta firmly, and with the passion and experience of the far away world of LA..
Nahyuta kissed him with a restrained passion, pale hair brushing Apollo’s cheeks as he leaned close as he could while letting Apollo guide the kiss, fingers lingering against his shoulder to brush over the fabric of his shirt.
Apollo kissed and tugged and sucked at Nahyuta's lips for a long moment, pressing his tongue into his mouth with a shiver. He didn't want to let go– but he didn't want to overwhelm him either– and he needed to breathe.
Finally, flushed red as his jacket, and out of breath, he let the kiss break, staring into Nahyuta's pale eyes.
Nahyuta’s eyes had the all too human twinge of flustered embarrassment in them, set over his dark and flushing cheeks.
“My, my…your time in LA has made you bold even outside the courtroom, I see.”
"Hesitate and it's all over," Apollo murmured, giving voice to his thoughts. He rubbed his cheek embarrassedly, as if he could rub the red off of it. "I wanted to kiss you, so… I did it."
“Hesitate and it’s all over.” Nahyuta said with a low chuckle. “Words to take to heart, it seems…here I was, hesitating and nearly missing my chance.”
"Glad I didn't waste mine then," Apollo replied, bashful and flustered. "You know… I wanted to do that when I first saw you in LA…"
Nahyuta’s humanity showed once more in the look of surprise that crossed his face. “...you did?”
Apollo squeezed him tightly again. "I absolutely did! I was so happy to see you again– before you opened your mouth anyway," he teased. "And how did you get prettier than when we were kids?"
Nahyuta laughed at that.
“Ah, yes that explains it. I could very much say the same, give or take a little…emotional difficulty.” He ran his fingers through Apollo’s hair with a wry smile “the healthy mountain air, most likely. Good luck. Nice hair. Maybe I prayed a little for it.”
Apollo leaned into Nahyuta's touch, self conscious about how dirty he was from all the cleaning.
"Well, the holy mother sure answered that prayer, 'Yuta. You look like an icon of a demigod."
“They do say my family line is the descendants of the Holy Mother. Perhaps I chanced into her looks.” He chuckled, preening his fingers through Apollo’s unruly locks. “But if I’m pretty, you’re handsome. Even a bit covered in dirt and dust.”
"Well, my looks don't stack up to yours, but thank you for saying so. I'll admit, I'm kind of dying for a shower after all this cleaning…"
He nuzzled his face against Nahyuta's gentle hand, glad beyond words for the close contact. He had missed it so much.
From the look of content on Nahyuta’s face, and the way his delicate fingers kept stroking through his mussed hair…it was clear that the last rites prosecutor had missed it as well.
“Does this place have a shower, Apollo?” he mused .“I don’t remember off hand, myself.”
"Not a fantastic one, admittedly… but it does have one. And it's pretty big…" He looked at Nahyuta with a hopeful smile on his face.
“Well.” Nahyuta tutted his tongue “...I suppose my duties as regent have had me running all over the place…I’m not the freshest I’ve ever been.”
The monk still looked immaculate despite his claims.
“Would you mind if I joined you?”
Apollo felt a little shiver go through him. He hadn't bathed with Nahyuta since they were little children on the riverbank. It would be very different now.
"Can I help you wash your pretty hair?" he asked, teasingly. "Will you wash mine?"
“It can be a hassle.” Nahyuta hummed as he wrapped his braid around his hand. “I’ll allow it, and tend to yours in return. It’s only fair, hmm?”
He winked, the trace of a smirk on his lips.
"It's only fair," Apollo echoed. And then he leaned forward, and gently kissed those smirking lips. "I'm glad you could sneak away from the palace for a while."
Nahyuta gave him a firm squeeze with a smile.
“Perhaps I can try and carve out a little more time…Princess Rayfa may even be willing to cover for me if I informed her of the need. She’s kinder than her mother gives her credit for.”
"I can only hope," Apollo said. He stood up off of Nahyuta's lap and pulled him up with him. "If I'm living out here in Kura'in again and still don't ever get to see you, I'll scream."
Nahyuta stood with a stretch of his lithe body and a little hum as his muscles stretched.
“I’ll do my best to promise that you won’t just see me from across a courtroom, alright?” He smiled down at him. “It’d be a shame if you rarely got to see the reason you’re here, right?”
Apollo poked him in the chest and grinned. "Oh I see you're going to be smug about this."
“I’m already bound into another round of samsara, yes? Might as well milk a little enjoyment out of it. Damned if you do, right? That’s the saying.”
Apollo laughed, and he grabbed Nahyuta's braid and gently tugged on it. "Yeah, that's the saying alright. Another round of samsara, please, bartender! Now come on, my soul may be dirty, but I'd like to at least clean my hair."
