The 5 Most Ridiculous Things Blamed on Bigfoot
Tumblr media
One of America’s most beloved cryptids is the humble Sasquatch. There’s something so relatable about a big, furry creature that wants to be left alone, though there may be some personal bias in there. The fact is, with the prevalence of high-quality cameras, and the surveillance state, the chance of Bigfoot remaining real, yet undiscovered, is pretty low. Which is a bummer in terms of general wonder, but also unfortunate for those looking for a supernatural fall guy for acts they may or may not be responsible for.
To that end, the big-footed beast has often borne the burden of a bevy of accusations. Such as…

10 Famous Bigfoot Sightings Caught on Tape: Utah Bigfoot Family (2011)
The first reported sighting of Bigfoot, or Sasquatch as he is often known, was in 1811 in Alberta, Canada, near what is now the town of Jasper. Matching the description found in many Native American legends, the creature was described as a towering, hairy beast that stalked the great forests. In recent times, much to the continued frustration of cryptozoologists around the world, sightings are often accompanied by shaky, low-quality videos filmed by hunters and hikers. However, no matter the quality, there are some videos that are hard to simply explain away.
Here, in chronological order, are the 10 most famous Bigfoot sightings that have been captured on film in the last 50 years.

On a family trip in 2011, YouTube user johnnny11 captured much more than his children having fun in the snow. Here’s what he has to say about his videos:
“I took my kids and their friends hiking and sledding high up in the Utah Mountains. A few weeks later as I was watching the video clips, I spotted three different cases with unexplained creatures that appeared to be a family of Sasquatch. In the first clip, a Bigfoot is seen walking away into the trees. The second clip shows a different Bigfoot watching us and then disappearing. The third clip appears to be another Bigfoot struggling to get away. We returned to the hills to look for prints, but the snow had melted.”

The Nameless Thing of Berkley Square is a creature that reportedly lives in the haunted townhouse on 50 Berkley Square in Mayfair, Central London. Some say that the building is the most haunted in London. The Nameless Thing has been described as a “mutant cephalopod” and as semi-aquatic. The first known account of the creature was from the 1840s in a report involving Sir Robert Warboys. The 20 year old had first believed the creature’s legend to be “unadulterated poppycock”. However, his friends, during a night of drinking, challenged him to spend a night in the haunted 2nd floor room of the building. The landlord of the building reluctantly allowed him to stay in the room. Warboys was armed with a pistol and had a cord nearby that triggered a bell in the landlord’s room. 45 minutes after the clock struck midnight, a shot rang out in the room as Warboys fired his pistol. The landlord heard the shot and ran into the room only to find Warboys, dead and holding the pistol that had fired. The landlord “noted that Warboys’ lips were peeled back from his clenched teeth in a grimace of horror and eyes seemed to be literally bulging from his skull”. He could only assume that the man had a run-in with the Nameless Thing of Berkley Square.

On this day:
DOVER DEMON
On the night of April 22, 1977, in Massachusetts, teenagers Will Taintor and Abby Brabham were creeped out while driving home when they caught sight of a thin, monkeylike creature. Hunkered down by the side of the road, it had a head the size of a watermelon and two glowing green eyes. There were no apparent ears, mouth, or nose on the biped, and when it turned its gaze on Abby, from a distance of eight feet away, she locked the door and asked Will to drive faster.
The previous evening, seventeen-year-old Bill Barlett and two friends were driving down the highway when the cryptoid was caught by the vehicle headlights. A three- or four-foot-tall, hairless creature with peach-colored, textured skin was crawling along a rock wall, its long fingers clutching its way. From the enormous head, large, glowing, orange eyes stared back at Bill. When he asked his pals if they had seen the creature, they replied that they had not, but wanted to go back and look for it. At first Bill, still shaken, refused, but one mile later was convinced to return. The entity was nowhere to be found. Upon arriving home, Bill drew a sketch of what he had seen.
Shortly after Bill's sighting, and a mile away from it, John Baxter was walking along the road when he noticed the creature coming toward him and assumed it was another person. When he called out, the alien jumped down into the gully and bolted into the woods as John raced after it. At the side of a creek, John stopped, eye to eye with the beast. It was outlined against the sky, standing on a rock and holding onto a tree, and its feet were "molded" to the shape of the stone it stood on. Afraid that the creature was preparing to spring, John dashed back to the road and caught a ride home.

Some of Gef’s most distinctive features were his yellowish fur, bushy tail and human-like hands.
Below is one of the best known pictures of Gef, though the validity of what is depicted is still under debate.

In October of 1987, Operation Deepscan was put into effect. This massive scale expedition to find the legendary Loch Ness Monster was comprised of 24 boats that spread out over the loch. The boats, however, couldn’t cover all of the loch during the operation; they could only scan around 60%. On the first day of the three day expedition, 3 strange creatures were caught on the scan around 256 - 590 feet under water. It was said that they were “larger than a shark but smaller than a whale”. The same creatures could not be found during the second or third days.

In July 2000, a group of hikers filmed their Bigfoot encounter and set the cryptozoology world abuzz. Believed by many to be one of the best pieces of evidence ever captured on tape, the group of 15, many of whom were disabled children on a camping trip, came across bizarre structures in the forests of Marble Mountain, near Fort Jones, California. Believing the structures to be a clumsily made den, the group began filming.
However, one eagle-eyed kid spotted a large humanoid figure standing high up on the mountain-top ridge, watching the group

The Anguished Man is an alleged haunted painting owned by Sean Robinson. Sean Robinson inherited The Anguished Man from his grandmother who kept it locked in the attic for 25 years claiming that it was evil. She said that the original artist mixed his own blood into the paint before killing himself. Sean doubted the paranormal aspect of the painting and hung it up anyway. After Sean hung the painting up, he heard the sound of crying and saw a dark figure in the corner of the room that the painting was hung in. Sean eventually took the Anguished Man down however he does let paranormal investigators do research on it.

One of the most famous supposed living dinosaurs is the Mokele-mbembe of Africa. This creature is thought to be akin to a sauropod - a long necked dinosaur like a brontosaurus. Sightings of this massive creature have been reported for more than 200 years and more than 30 documented expeditions to try and find it have taken place. The Mokele-mbembe is reported to be extremely dangerous despite the fact that it is a herbivore; it is often said that it kills hippos that wander into its territory.
This creature’s name can be translated from Lingala, which is a Bantu language. The Mokele-mbembe’s name can be interpreted as “one who stops the flow of rivers”, an example of how large and powerful the animal is said to be.

Cryptober Day 14: The Hopkinsville Goblin.
Tumblr media
The Kelly–Hopkinsville encounter, also known as the Hopkinsville Goblins Case, is the name given to a series of connected 1955 incidents of alleged close encounters extraterrestrial beings near Kelly and Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
There were dozens of eyewitnesses to these incidents, including two families housed in a farmhouse and other civilians in the area who had no connection to the families. Witnesses also included several local policemen and a state trooper who saw and heard strange phenomena such as unexplained lights in the night sky and noises the same night.
The seven people present in the farmhouse that night claimed that they were terrorized by an unknown number of creatures similar to gremlins. The residents described them as being silvery in color and standing at around three feet tall, with upright pointed ears, thin limbs, long arms and claw-like hands. Their movements on occasion seemed to defy gravity with them floating above the ground and appearing in high up places, and they "walked" with a swaying motion as if wading through water. Although the creatures never entered the house, they would pop up in windows and at the doorway. The families fled the farmhouse in the middle of the night to the local police station where Sheriff Russell Greenwell noted they were visibly shaken. The families returned to the farmhouse with Sheriff Greenwell and twenty officers, and the occurrences continued. Police saw evidence of the struggle and damage to the house, as well as seeing strange lights and hearing noises themselves. Firearms were used to shoot at the creatures, with little or no effect, and the house and surrounding grounds were extensively damaged during the incident. Unfortunately, however, there are no known photographs of a Hopkinsville Goblin.
Fun fact: the Gen 3 Pokemon Sableye is heavily based off of the goblin's alleged appearance, and the film ET was thought to be inspired by the incidents as well.
I love this one. He's just a lil guy. 💜

A Tiger Quoll, a possible explanation for Waitoreke sightings.
The Waitoreke (or Waitoreki, Waitorete) is an otter/beaver-like cryptid said to live in New Zealand. It is usually described as a small otter-like animal that lives in the South Island of New Zealand. There are many theories on the Waitoreke’s true identity, such as it being an otter, beaver or pinniped. The Waitoreke is usually described as a small otter-like creature sometimes as big as a cat. It is described as having brownish fur and short legs.
The sightings usually place the creature near or in the water on the South Island of New Zealand. Its fur is described as being short like that of an otter.
Very little physical evidence proving the existence of the Waitoreke exists. Julius von Haast is reported to have obtained a Waitoreke pelt in 1868. The fur was brown, with white spots, and the toes lacked webbing. This is inconclusive evidence; the pelt seems to have resembled a quoll’s.
Quolls are sometimes claimed to have been released in New Zealand in 1868. The Common Brushtail Possum was successfully introduced in 1858 and is now a widespread pest, whereas introduction of the Common Ringtail Possum ultimately failed. Both animals are unspotted.“Evidence” for the existence of the Waitoreke is mainly based on sporadic accounts of an “unidentified amphibious animal” in the country’s South Island spanning well over 200 years. Some of the more infamous accounts are dubious and/or incongruous - but a significant number of descriptions (particularly from the late 19th century onwards) share a striking similarity to each other and to species known to exist outside New Zealand. The Māori people said that in old times they used to keep waitoreke as pets.

Hey so this guy on the Youtubes has presented compelling evidence that the thylacine is still alive. I have higher hopes for this particular research project than others I’ve encountered in recent history. (TW: bones from 23:20-23:26, possible upsetting scenario involving the consumption of an animal between 21:50-22:45 and the visual of a deceased animal being used as a lure at 6:47-6:51)
