A Fire in May

They don’t light it often, but when they do, it’s always special. Eddie sits on the edge of the coffee table as the wood in the fireplace starts to ignite. It’s a useless fire, more for aesthetic purposes than any life saving warmth, but that’s not exactly the point either. There’s no need for a fire in the middle of May, just like there was no need for Eddie to go three towns over to a chain bakery to pick up a pie when Steve owns a bakery. His husband is the best damn baker he’s ever met, and yet he picked up a pie on the way home anyway.
The wood crackles in front of him as the kindling starts to settle. It should be good to sit for a moment, which as Eddie looks at the massive clock (a wall clock, mind you, no grandfather clocks allowed in this home) is right on schedule. Steve should be home any minute now from his meeting.
It’s been a tough few weeks, probably the toughest they’ve had in years. Things are getting better now that the bakery is out of the seasonal rush (even if Steve is knee deep in event and wedding season, he claims it isn’t as stressful) and their insurance finally closed out the ticket from the accident last fall. Wayne’s finally moved in and settled, resting in his room as Eddie gets everything ready for tonight. It’d been a fight to get him to move in, to leave that little trailer back in Indiana and move out west, but eventually (and after a close call with a near tumble off his porch) Wayne decided he’s too old to live alone.
Everyone’s finally doing okay, there are no major stressors within the Party or their own little family, but it’s still tough. Even without Eddie’s car getting t-boned (in a parking lot, by the way. He wasn’t even driving it!), the bakery being what it is (a headache and a half if you ask Eddie — he tried the whole small business thing and his tattoo shop tanked after a year, but Steve has a better handle on things and the years of experience under his belt Eddie didn’t have), or even Wayne’s health, none of it would have mattered.
Not when Steve relapsed back in March.
He’d been five years sober, a month shy from earning his next chip, when it happened. An ill-timed tattoo convention took Eddie away for a weekend, on the anniversary of Eddie’s second run-in with the Upside Down. It’s been years since it reared its ugly head, but every now and then the anniversaries make it harder to forget. Usually, Steve handles them fine, has plans in place to get through all five of his anniversaries so he doesn’t drown in the bottle, whether Robin or Eddie’s available or not. And according to Steve, he did them. He tried so hard, but all it took was one nasty online review of the bakery on the wrong day while Eddie was out of town to throw it all out the window.
Eddie had found him passed out on the bed, empty bottle of vodka still in his fist.
And now, Steve’s back in meetings three nights a week, working on his gold chip in just a few days time. They’re working through it together, with Eddie going to his own meetings twice a week — once for Al Anon and another for NA.
But tonight was Steve’s solo meeting, so Eddie took the opportunity to do something special.
He hears Steve’s car pull into the driveway as he’s fixing their plates. Eddie sets down the plates in their usual spots and hurries to the living room, right as Steve walks in.
Steve pauses, magnified eyes focused on the burning fire in the living room as he sets down his keys. “You built a fire?”
“I did,” Eddie says as he drifts into Steve’s space.
“Why?”
Eddie adjusts Steve’s glasses and helps balance him as he takes off his shoes. “You said you were homesick,” Eddie explains as he guides Steve to the table, “and I know your mom loved to use her fireplace-“
“And ours reminds me of hers,” Steve finished with a love stuck smile. “Eds,” he starts.
“If you’re about to say I didn’t need to do this,” Eddie interrupts, “then don’t. It’s nothing extravagant but I made us dinner and ordered your favorite pie from—“
Steve kisses him, forceful and tender all at once. “I love you,” he whispers when they pull away.
“I love you too,” Eddie says. He brushes back Steve’s peppered hair and kisses his forehead. “Let’s eat so we can snuggle by the fire. I made your favorite.”
“Are those flowers?” Steve asks as they separate, moving as a unit toward the dining table.
There’s a bouquet of multicolored flowers that Eddie doesn’t know the names to, and neither does Steve but he’ll be asking Robin about by morning, on the table. Usually they have the paper flowers their niece made them as the centerpiece, but Eddie retired those to the office for their impromptu date night.
They enjoy their meal in peace, playing footsie under the table as they share bits and pieces of their day. When they settle in front of the fire, a record playing softly and the dishes in the dishwasher, it’s like time slows down with them.
“You really didn’t have to do this,” Steve says as he leans into Eddie’s chest. Usually he’d be the big spoon, so Eddie’s taking every chance he gets to hold Steve close.
“I know, baby love.”
“I’m glad you did though,” he admits.
Eddie kisses the top of his head. “Me too. I think we both needed this.”
Steve hums, but doesn’t say anything else. He doesn’t need to, not when they’re both on the same page. The battles are never over and tomorrow will bring its own stress and headaches, but for now, and for always, they’ve got each other. That’s all that matters.

“But–”
“No,” Steve says, eyes closed as he pinches the bridge of his nose. “I do not want to know.”
There’s a rustling, then some heavy footsteps as someone steps in front of him. Delicate hands touch both of his elbows. “Baby,” Eddie coos softly.
“Nope.”
“It’s not that bad.”
“Looks bad.”
“Your eyes are closed.”
“I’m scared to open them.”
Eddie makes a noise of distress as he forces his way into Steve’s arms, head tucked under his chin like a troubled cat. “Stevie,” he whines, swaying them slightly.
Steve’s helpless to wrap his arms around Eddie, feeling the spikes of the costume and something… wet. He wrinkles his nose, but keeps his eyes screwed shut. “I really, really don’t want to know,” he tells Eddie, even as he kisses the side of Eddie’s head (or at least… he hopes he did).
“You’re reading into it.”
“Don’t you think it speaks for itself?”
Eddie huffs, nipping at Steve’s collarbone. “It’s art, Stevie.”
“Are you two going to wrap it up or not?”
Steve opens his eyes without hesitation to glare in Gareth’s direction, then immediately regrets it. He’s still wearing nothing but a jockstrap and covered in some kind of goo. Suddenly the popcorn ceiling is the most interesting thing in the world.
“Shut up, man,” Eddie huffs as he peels himself away from Steve.
He looks down and really looks at the… monster costume Eddie’s wearing. Honestly, the whole set up reads as some weird porno shot, without the sexy monster costume. Now that’s something Steve would be open to seeing, just to see what Eddie could do with it, but no that’s not what they’re doing. Instead, Eddie’s in a weird Godzilla-like vampire knock off costume and Gareth is his… sacrifice?
Steve’s too scared to ask.
He drops a kiss to Eddie’s cheek. “Go… do your thing,” he says, “but I am getting far, far away from here and your half-naked friends.”
Eddie snorts. “Yeah, okay. Thanks for bringing this,” Eddie says as he takes the bag of stuff he had left behind from Steve’s hand. He kind of forgot he was holding it. “See you tonight?”
“Yeah, of course.” Steve kisses him again, tasting the makeup covering Eddie’s lips. “Just leave the costume at home, yeah?”
“You got it babe.” Eddie takes a step back and puts on the monster mask, clipping it to the headset he’s wearing. Before Steve can slip back out the door, he lets out a squawking roar and stomps toward the fake fire Jeff’s crouching near.
Steve is open-minded to learning about Eddie’s interest, he is, but nothing could pay him to try and understand what the fuck Doug was thinking with this student film. Nothing.

“We don’t get here enough,” Steve says as he pushes the stroller.
Robin hums. “No, we don’t.” She tugs down the visor on the stroller to hide Charlotte from the sun more. “I’m surprised their parents let you take them.”
Steve’s eyes count each kid again, all seven accounted for, as they head to the next exhibit. “I think the Feds’ story about me helping get them out of the fire really put the final nail in the ‘Steve’s a Competent Babysitter’ title. Kind of hard to come up with an excuse why I can’t take them somewhere when I saved their lives.” It's not that simple, he knows that, but he’s proven time and time again that he’ll do what it takes to get those little shits out of harm’s way.
Erica stops in the middle of the walkway and points to the ice cream stand with a raised eyebrow. Their deal still rings in his head.
“Fine,” he calls, “go.” He can’t deny her anything, especially not when it’s as hot as it is out here. They hadn’t really taken into account the August heat when they made the last minute plan for a day at the zoo.
She holds her head high as she passes the others and heads for the stand.
By the time Steve and Robin make their way to the stand, the others already have their ice cream cones – arguing over which flavor is supreme. They’re all wrong, nothing beats butterscotch, but Steve doesn’t have the fight in him to get in the middle of that. He pays for everyone and takes Charlotte over to a nearby table so he can share the cup of ice cream he got for them.
She’s been grumpy all day. He’s pretty sure it’s the fact he won’t let her down to run around, not with the cast still on her leg. He’d love nothing more for her to be able to play like she should, but he also needs her to heal right, so stroller jail it is.
“C’mon, Lots,” Steve says, holding out the spoon for her to take a bite.
Charlotte pushes away the spoon with a mighty, “No!”
Steve sighs and takes the bite for himself.
“I thought she liked the zoo,” Dustin asks, pointing to her.
“She does,” Steve says. “She’s mad at me.”
“How do you anger a toddler?” Mike asks, a snotty little eyebrow raised.
Steve just shrugs. His patience is thinning and as much as his little girl lights up his life, right now, he needs a goddamn break. He keeps trying to feed her, every few bites, while the kids decide where they’re going next. The reptile house seems to be their next hit.
Suddenly, Charlotte lights up, straining against the seatbelt on her stroller. “Da-ee! Duck!” she cries, pointing past him.
He looks over his shoulder and, sure enough, a few ducks are waddling through the gate toward the tables. Huh. Steve sets down the cup of ice cream and quickly pulls Charlotte out of her stroller for a better look. “You see the duckies?”
“Duck,” she says, toothy grin wide as she carefully watches them.
They drove all this way to see cool animals and spend the day together, and the one thing that puts a smile on her face isn’t even a part of the zoo.
The ducks quack as they get closer. Steve knows he shouldn’t encourage them, but he reaches into the diaper bag for some of Charlotte’s crackers so she can feed them. It’s the least he can do to make this day better for her.
“Gentle,” he says, helping her scatter the cracker around.
She giggles, squealing with delight as one of them investigates her cast. “Duck! No!” she says, reaching down to shoo the duck away.
He looks up to see the kids all done with their ice cream and ready to move on. “Go on,” he tells them. “I think we’re going to be here a minute.”
