i love when a character is a ghost but in a tragic way instead of a scary way. i love when a character has been dead from the beginning but is still holding on to stay in the narrative. i love when a character could choose to resent the living but ends up loving them instead. i love when a character drives the story but isn’t quite there enough to be at the center of it. i love when the ghosts are the protectors instead of the ones causing the harm. i love when a character is at the heart of the story because depending on where you began it, no matter how you told it, the story is about the ghost who struggled to keep their humanity

Should attempt to make a list of all the times Harrow initiates touch with Gideon. I keep thinking about Harrow stepping on Gideon. Kicking her in the face. Grabbing her jaw. Shaking her by the shoulders. Balling up her fists in her shirt. Like… good or bad, Harrow just wants to touch Gideon.

#it's always stood out to me that harrow uses ZERO necromancy after the avulsion trial. explicitly. in the text. none whatsoever. #she is absolutely dedicated to physically carrying gideon back to their quarters. gideon who is about twice her size. #harrow with her little necromancer twig arms #hoists gideon's arm around her shoulders and drag/carry/supports her all the way back to their rooms #it's a small thing but there's So Much character in it #griddlehark

I've often thought about this, specifically Gideon's actions. “Nav, when I saw her face I decided I wanted to live. I decided to live forever just in case she ever woke up.” Her voice had the quality of someone in a long dream.

She stared through Gideon without looking at her, and Gideon gently took her hands away from Harrow’s jaw. Instead she sat back in the water, buoyed by the salt, her eyes starting to sting from it. This comes directly after Gideon has just shown Harrow the sweetest affection, pressed her lips to Harrow's forehead, held her for what seems like an age, tenderly stroked hair from Harrow's temple (whilst Harrow shudders in her arms ), swore the One Flesh, One End vow (marry a moron). Things are changing between them, n she gets blindsided with the information that Harrow's affections might possibly lie elsewhere. Like, Gideon is absolutely unreliable, and we get no inner monologue from her about her feelings at this finding out -- and as we find out later -- followed by the snap assumption that Harrow doesn't love her. Gideon has been forgiving, and vulnerable. What do you do when you've been low key rejected? You create distance, perhaps take your hands from where they've been tenderly resting on the object of your affections jaw? Your eyes might prickle with the onset of tears, that one can claim is due to the salt in the water. Salt, that up until this point has curiously not been mentioned as an irritant. Anyways, I'm sure I'm prolly reaching but.... it just made me think
