...continued from previous post My mum exclaimed in support of the youth, “Ogun la wa ja laiye - we came to this life to fight.” And fight we will. They may keep us off the streets and try to instill fear in us but you can’t kill the spirit of this long overdue revolution. Nigeria is awake, the youth of our nation are galvanized and bound by a common purpose to end bad governance. The Nigerian youth have demonstrated the limitless power of real unity: Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve watched as friends, peers, queers, feminists, outsiders, Christians, Muslims, area boys, old folk, young folk, people of all tribes, all walks of life organizing and banding together to effect change for the entire nation. The main protest site served as a makeshift mosque on Fridays, a church on Sunday and it wasn’t until the government and military intervened that it became a site of chaos and death. By colonial design, Nigeria has been historically divided by religious, class and ethnic differences so this kind of unified mobilization is almost unprecedented. By day 4 of the protests, a self-sufficient microcosm had formed to collect and redistribute funds, provide food, water, first aid, mental health counselling, legal aid, security services and garbage cleanup for the protesters, all the while maintaining transparency and accountability with a daily report of how donated funds are being used. Here we see Nigerian youth exceling with limited resources on so many of the very essentials that our government has routinely failed to provide. It’s a sad day to be Nigerian. My heart is heavy. Thanks to all of the photographers documenting. Bless you https://www.instagram.com/p/CGnnmiHhG6i/?igshid=tfrhc409z2ey

Yesterday, the governor of Lagos state, @jidesanwoolu imposed a 4pm curfew to stifle peaceful protests against nation-wide police brutality, corruption and bad governance in Nigeria. This came amidst video footage of state-funded thugs being exploited to incite violence and discredit the #endsars movement; as well as the removal of CCTV cameras and an intentional power outage at the main protest site, Lekki Toll Gate. The curfew was extended till 9pm with little notice but by 7pm, the military opened fire on peaceful protesters, many of who were sat holding hands, singing the national anthem and waving the flag. As of this morning, it is estimated that about 78 people were killed in this state-sanctioned violence. The governor and the military have denied any casualties. To stoop this low is a clear sign of a government with no regard for human, a government with the sole intention of advancing the interests of its incumbents and not the people it should be serving – a failed government. Amongst the youth murdered and injured yesterday are likely some of the most marginalized of Nigerians, so disenfranchised they put their loves on the line in this selfless act of patriotism. These are our heroes and may their demise not be in vain. #endsars #endbadgovernanceinnigeria #lekkimassacre https://www.instagram.com/p/CGnmEx-hU6I/?igshid=1vl961y5sarto

It’s the final week to see my sculptural and performance work in the beautiful group show @rajniperera has curated. Patel Brown Gallery - 21 Wade Ave. Tue-Sat, 11-6pm. In Blackbodybag, I continue to imbue everyday objects with the mythical. Inspired by the Egungun masquerades of the Yoruba, I charge the garbage bag as a medium through which I invoke and honor queer African ancestry. Across many African cultures, queer folk were revered as artisans, arbitrators, healers and gateways to the spiritual world. However, with the onset of colonization and the influx of religiosity, queer expression was deemed taboo and punishable - in this way, the garbage bag functions as a metaphor for the erasure and ongoing persecution of queer African histories and identity.
