India Design 2023. Brilliant preview evening of the best in design and decor . We have a legacy in our family of being patrons of design . Our ancestral house , the Pyarelal Mansion in Delhi where I was born, was designed by Master Sathe & Kothari way back in 1949. This is the same firm which designed The Oberoi New Delhi in 1965. My parents still have the Art Deco Burmese teak furniture in their house in perfect shape till date. When I got married in 1998, Ayush Kasliwal (Anantaya Design showing at ID) designed an entire suite of furniture that included the bedroom and drawing room furniture with a unique design sensibility of teak and cast iron. Wonderful seeing Nasreen Mohamedi and Husain at Vadhera Art Gallery. Akar Prakar Gallery presented a beautiful show inspired by Benaras by artist Debasish Mukherjee. And the find of the day was Karan Shrestha, the talented contemporary artist from Nepal with his show “Apparatus at Play “ at Shine Empire Gallery. The best thing about Delhi winters are the weddings , outdoor is good and a big fat one makes it better . And I think like most Dilliwallas, deep down one is looking forward to what new concept will be introduced to create a wow and up the ante 😉. An Island bar with Jäegermeister shots coming at -18 C , exclusive single malt section is mandatory but to be asked in what whisky you would like your warm toddy (gently simmering with orange peel, cloves , cinnamon…) was a first . Endless buffet with regional cuisines is mandatory but a section with a degustation menu served personally by a celebrity chef was a first . Live performances is mandatory but to have a Sufi singer with an 8 piece band including a violinist was a first . The mandatory “bhaaji” given by all punjabis is mandatory but to get a gigantic box custom made by Haldirams was a first . Three cheers to the return of the event industry in full force, thanks to the Indian wedding business …. On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, Shri Uday Mahurkar (Central Information Commissioner, GOI) , organised an event with Samadhananchal’s project Triveni, for the betterment of our environment , followed by a robust celebration of Lohri . “Triveni “ , is the planting of three trees , Neem , Peepal and Badh (Banyan) as a trio that produce a large amount of oxygen that purifies the environment. Peepal and Banyan release oxygen at night . Contrary to what we have heard about Peepal and Bargad as haunted trees, Hindu mythology says that Banyan is the abode of Brahma, Neem of Vishnu and Peepal of Mahesh, Lord Shiva.
