anyone judging rogue for her love triangle and her choices in x-men 97, what's it like to be dead wrong and wholly misunderstand a character? how can you look at rogue, everything she's been through, knowing that she entirely lacks physical contact and connection in that way (which is a basic human need) and blame her for not being able to let go of a connection that allows for that?

there's plenty else to be said for magneto's part in things and that'll be a separate post, but speaking just to rogue and her mindset, i think it makes so much sense for her to feel conflicted. she can love remy and not want to lose what magneto can offer her.

she was good at not asking too many questions, which she suspected was why she had been chosen for this. her quieter nature allowed her to blend seamlessly, fading into the background as a silent watcher, observant and unobtrusive. this lack of presence coupled with her ability to touch and know... she had to assume she was a spy. she wasn't exactly briefed on any further purpose except to go and stand guard over this woman who, as far as rogue could tell, was at least right about this one thing — she did not need protection.

so rogue was left to assume edhellis's importance meant she was a means to an end. it mattered very little in the end. she was a good soldier (her mother's devout, the one to follow without question) and she would do as mystique had bidden.

"i don't ask questions," she spoke aloud even as her hands moved, the rudimentary motions a little clumsy but at least accurate. she could have let the brush of her fingers across unsuspecting skin gift her with a more substantial grasp of the silent language, but it felt like exposing her hand far too soon. "i'm sure your... father has his reasons."

but gods, she was bored. there was no denying that. she had hoped that, whatever the reason for this mission, there would have at least been some action element involved. not this meandering and watching some woman eat fruit all afternoon. "you're clearly of some importance," she spoke and signed, glancing around the room like something in it would confirm the statement.

like often, edhellis has likely forgotten rogue is in the room. deft fingers cut with gentle precision through the aril of the yew fruit to get to the seed, then eating the flesh around it.

you must be bored, she signs without taking her eyes off her work, the motions of her fingers slow to allow @lecoquin to parse them, the same quiet patience expected of a saint. finally, the glow of her eyes lands on her ... adviser. i am no monarch. i fail to see the need for you to guard me.

ORIGINAL MUTANT ABILITY — POWER, LIFE-FORCE, AND MEMORY ABSORPTION.

rogue's original mutant ability, which kicked in at the age of fourteen, is the ability to absorb memories, power, and even life-force through skin to skin contact. she learned this the hard way when she kissed her first boy, nearly killing him with her touch and gaining access to his memories through the incident. he falls into a coma for nearly a decade, cementing rogue's feelings of being a monster from a young age.

while the absorption of memories and any power a mutant might have gives rogue access to those powers, it is usually for a limited time, which various from person to person (human or mutant). once lost, the thoughts and specific memories of a person do not stay with rogue, though she may have inklings about them from time to time. however, in the specific cases of captain marvel and wonder man, there are some variations to this.

POWERS TAKEN FROM CAPTAIN MARVEL / WONDER MAN — SUPER STRENGTH, FLIGHT, SEMI-INVULNERABILITY

after her first fight with captain marvel, in which rogue was able to gain the upper-hand and nearly drains the life-force from the future avenger, she was granted a portion of carol's abilities. while she maintained much of carol's psyche for quite some time in the aftermath of this, with the help of the x-men and professor xavier, carol has her mind restored.

however, her powers never fully leave rogue. she maintains the ability to fly, and while the strength does lessen slightly, she is still far stronger than she was before, making her better able to withstand physical trauma. it is wildly speculated why this occurs, but there is no clear reason.

these abilities are further boosted after encounters with wonder man, who is not entirely biologically the same as mutants or other heroes thanks to his enhancements with pym particles. between carol danvers and simon williams, rogue maintains the ability to fly, an unnatural strength, and an invulnerability to poisons and physical trauma.

#i have tweaked some things about her abilities because i don't like how op she can be in some versions #i'm sticking with the extra abilities coming from captain marvel first and foremost because #1) i like that dynamic ; its interesting and spicy and i love carol danvers #2) wonder man does not interest me as much but i think including him down the line adds an element of Logic #as to why she maintains these abilities #✘ 。․ • — headcanon.
