Remembering one of the world’s great literary rock stars! ✨ 🌟 100 years ago today, Sylvia Beach opened the doors to her Shakespeare and Company (1919 - 1941). Her Parisian bookshop attracted the great expat writers of the time—Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot—including many of the most compelling female voices: Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, Janet Flanner, Kay Boyle, and Mina Loy. Beach also helped usher in modern literature: she was the first, in 1922, to publish James Joyce’s Ulysses, when no one else dared. Sylvia Whitman, the co-owner of our bookshop here on rue de la Bûcherie, recently wrote a letter dedicated to Beach, saying in part: "Your story stands like a beacon when we need direction, comfort, or inspiration. A peak into The Vic, heat 7, round 1, with Led Zepplin blasting in the background, reminds me a little of ski races in Oregon. (Skimboarders from Brazil and Mexico advanced to the next round.) Background from Visit Laguna Beach: “Held every summer at Aliso Beach Park, The VIC is the World Championship of Skimboarding. Skimboarding is like surfing and nothing like surfing. It uses a smaller shaped board with no fins and allows the rider to glide across the shore break of a crashing wave. These waves are un-surfable by traditional surfers, but not to the skimmer.
