⚽🚀 Did you know that a soccer ball survived the Challenger shuttle explosion in 1996? 🤯 The ball was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean after the tragic crash that killed all seven astronauts on board. This resilient ball is a testament to the durability and strength of soccer balls, as well as the human spirit in the face of tragedy. 🙌🏼 Have you ever heard of this incredible story before? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️ #ChallengerExplosion #SoccerBall #Survivor #Resilience #Durability #Strength #HumanSpirit #Tragedy #SpaceFacts #NASA #Inspiration #InstaScience #ScienceFacts #SpaceExploration #NeverForget #EmojisInTheAir Hashtags: #ChallengerExplosion #SoccerBall #Survivor #Resilience #Durability #Strength #HumanSpirit #Tragedy #SpaceFacts #NASA #Inspiration #InstaScience #ScienceFacts #SpaceExploration #NeverForget #ScienceCommunication #ScienceNews #ScienceDiscoveries #ScienceHistory #ScienceStories #SpaceStories #AstroTrivia #AstroFacts #STEM #Educational #EmojisInTheAir #InstaFun #FunFacts #DidYouKnow #FactOfTheDay (at USA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRnEFDPyOp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Found this one in a box of #books on the sidewalk – it’s a thing we do in #brooklyn . Published in 1986, a #science & #sciencehistory #book on the nature of #time and our changing understanding and perception of it. Very, very readable – and I say that as someone with a couple fine arts degrees, but hasn’t been in a #science classroom since … early/mid ‘90s? Some of the contemporary (for the ‘80s) stuff is now noticeably dated – even I could spot that. We definitely have a more accurate understanding of the age of the universe and phenomena like black holes, but I just really appreciated Richard Morris’s ability to boil down complicated scientific concepts into easily understandable prose with a minimum amount of math. #Design by Barbara Marks. #OTD 1969: THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
Apollo XI Moon Landing
By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs, who drank Tang
On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong made one small step that forever changed history. Our records detail the carefully choreographed sequence of steps—from lift-off to splash-down—that resulted in the mission’s “giant leap for mankind."
* Check out this very long distance call from the White House to space, noted in President Nixon's atypical Daily Diary entry: "The President held an interplanetary conversation with Apollo 11 Astronauts..."
*See the green White House phone used for the call! NARA IDs 595079, 6922346.

22nd August 1828, death of German-French physician, and pioneer of phrenology, Franz Joseph Gall. Influenced by Johann Kaspar Lavater in his work on Physiognomy, (the practice of discerning the character of a person through their facial appearance), Gall further proposed that the measurement of bumps on the skull, and the skull size could be used to predict mental traits. Gall’s theories would become most accepted in England where they were used for racial and colonial superiority, in the justification of the subjugation of non white peoples. The theories also became popular in the United States from 1820 to 1850 for the same reasoning. Despite phrenology even during Gall’s lifetime being shunned as a pseudoscience, Gall's study of phrenology did assist in establishing psychology as a science. The practice also entered popular language, the terms high brow, and low brow deriving from determining a persons supposed intelligence from these same skull shapes. A #SeabirdSaturday / #SeabirderSaturday that’s a little different…perusing the @pawsplett Charity Shop (as one does after just moving house), I decided to look into their books section (as a minimalist, something I RARELY do, especially in this age of most anything being available digitally). And boy, was I rewarded! How on earth I came across copies of popular ornithological books signed by THE Ralph W. Schreiber (& his wife, Betty Anne) in a small town of South Africa, I don’t know…but having worked in the Ornithology collections at @nhmla, & being an ornithologist in general, these finds were particularly special…as Dr. Schreiber was one of the key players in determining the negative effects of the pesticide DDT on birds, particularly thinning eggshells that led to catastrophic crashes in Brown Pelican populations. #seabirds #pelicans #ornithology #books #thrifttreasures #thriftfinds #thriftshop #ralphschreiber #ralphwschreiber #nhmla #nhmlac #sciencehistory #scicomm #conservation #sciencebooks #popsci #ecology #ecotoxicology #toxicology (at PAWS - Plett Animal Welfare Service (Plettenberg Bay, SA)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHTe1pBg1wI/?igshid=1dlt1fopd5neo
