Women’s History Month through the lens of Flamenco, including dance, art, music and fashion.
Today we celebrate dancer, choreographer and teacher Pilar López Júlvez (4/6/1912, San Sebastián – 25/3/2008, Madrid).
The younger sister of Encarnación López Júlvez (1898-1945), known as La Argentinita “Pilar López… was the last representative of the golden age of flamenco ballet in the 1930s and 1940s. She was considered a fine, serious classical dancer, but it was as a choreographer and teacher of young dancers that she excelled.” (Full article theguardian.com)

After she and her family were sent to the Amache Japanese-American Internment Camp in Colorado during WWII, Joy Hashimoto's mother helped to establish YWCAs in different internment camps to help women and girls: bit.ly/3SHd9he
Later, she herself became an active #YWCAleader. Today, we celebrate Joy's decades of service and legacy of advancing justice. bit.ly/3Ye4Vi7. #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM2023

On this day in 1818, twenty-one-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley published "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus," and we published this post - two centuries later. While we may not be on Ms. Shelley's level - and let's be real, who is? - the original post became our most popular one to date, attracting 53,000 likes, over 1,000 comments, and 12,000 shares. We are still humbled by these numbers. Snapshots of the Past hopes to keep providing unique glimpses into history with detailed, informative, and witty commentary. Now, go dust off that old copy of Frankenstein, prop your feet up, grab a glass of wine, and give a toast to the woman who pretty much invented science fiction.

Map of Jaipur Jaipur State, historically known as the Kingdom of Amber, was a kingdom of India, centred on Jaipur town and later a princely state during the British period. It existed from the 12th century and was in a subsidiary alliance with the British from 1818 until their withdrawal from India in August 1947. It was then fully independent until its ruler acceded to India in April 1949, and retained some internal self-government for a period after that. Jaipur's predecessor state was the Kingdom of Dhundhar or Dausa, founded in 1093 by Dullah Rai, also known as Dulha Rao. The state was known as Amber between the fourteenth century and 1727. In that year, a new capital was built and named Jayapura, when the kingdom was renamed as Jaipur. Jaipur became part of Rajasthan on 7th Apr 1949 Source: wikipedia —————————————————————- Series:Silver Jubilee of Maharaja's Accession to Throne Scott#: IN-JA 51 SG#: IN-JA 74 Face value: 3/4 Indian anna Colour: Black & Lake —————————————————————- #stamp #philately #Philatelie #filatelia #Philatélie #切手収集 #Filatelia #dailypost #dailyhistory #dailyart #dailyfact #history #india #indiastamps #jaipur #jaipurstamps #1947 #maharaja #mahal #hawamahal #palace #mahal #sawaimansingh #raja #art #indianstamps #pinkcity #map #pink #king (at Jaipur, Rajasthan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CREPSDlhOil/?utm_medium=tumblr

Middle Ages
The Middle Ages was defined by a Feudal system in much of Europe. This system consisted of kings, lords, knights, vassals, and peasants. The people who were part of the church played an important part too. When a person was born into a certain group, they rarely moved to another level.

Convict Lake, part of Mammoth Lakes , is rich with historical context from a Native American Myth of Pot-sa-wa-gees "Water Babies" to an 1871 shoot out with a posse led by Sheriff Hightower. Our current name for the lake is derived from a group of convicts who escaped from a Carson Valley Prison in 1871 and stowed away in this pristine little valley with a lake and creek. Convict lake (elev.7850 ft) Is surrounded by tall peaks, the largest being Mt. Morrison (elev. 12,276 ft). Morrison was a merchant killed in the 1871 conflict along with Mono Jim, Indian Deputy, whom the opposite shorter peak is named after. #395north #justgo #california #history #easternsierras #dailyhistory #wanderfar (at Convict Lake)

Child Welfare Stamps by Netherland as semi-postal stamps A semi-postal stamp or semipostal stamp, also known as a charity stamp, is a postage stamp issued to raise money for a particular purpose (such as a charitable cause) and sold at a premium over the postal value. Typically the stamp shows two denominations separated by a plus sign, but in many cases the only denomination shown is for the postage rate, and the postal customer simply pays the higher price when purchasing the stamps. Semi-postals became widespread in European countries at the beginning of the 20th century. In many cases they have become standard annual issues. The surcharges are typically a fraction of the face value. Source: wikipedia —————————————————————- Scott#: NL B684 SG#: …….
