When I was 10 or so, I happened across a book about President Kennedy that was written for children. I remember that it was filled with black and white photos of the Kennedys, and they looked so full of life and rich and untouchable. Later on, I became more an admirer of Robert Kennedy, who showed such capacity for growth and was such an awkward but determined and ultimately eloquent politician. I watched the movie “Jackie” before deciding my 12-year-old daughter might like it. She’s watched it three times in the last week. I can understand why a child would be drawn to the movie, to Jackie herself, her youth and beauty and tragedy. The nice thing for me is that it started with this fascination with Jackie, but along the way so many other questions have come up. We talked about how Johnson became vice-president when he and Kennedy hated one another, which led to a discussion of how much strategy matters to winning the electoral college. And then she wanted to know if any First Ladies had died while in office, and I had to look that up, because I only knew Ellen Wilson. And then she wanted to know about all the living presidents and what they do when they’re not president anymore. And a dozen other things. And so we learn.
