it’s with depression that i fear i have to say, i think for a long time (too long really), zuko doesn’t reach out to his uncle during his retirement in ba sing se, not even for the much needed guidance he could use, because he considers it part of the exhaustive list of reparations the fire nation (and he himself) owes

#zuko: he deserves peace too that’s what this is all for #and you zuko? your peace? (he doesn’t know the meaning of the word in relation to himself) #i’m sure iroh reaches out often. lots of letters #but for one zuko’s swamped and pushing himself past his own limits with his responsibilities besides #and for two he’s just as guilty about his treatment of his uncle as his treatment of the gaang if not probably moreso really #it is of course horribly misguided and i expect iroh would eventually show up on his doorstep like you IDIOT boy of mine—! #but until then. zuko is in fact being a self sacrificing and self hating idiot #i also think this is largely true to his character because he has no idea how to uphold normal and healthy relationships #obvi particularly familial #and zuko always deals in extremes when it comes to everything he does #so rather than outright cruelty and insults….he swings in the opposite direction and overcompensates…. #by shutting iroh out completely #and justifying it as ‘he deserves peace and i do not’ #which is completely incorrect of course on all levels #but he’s still learning and his development arc doesn’t end at the finale of book 3 #ebb and flow. like water one might even say teehee #idk if this is canon to the comics i’m not super familiar with them except for a few plot points and quotes #it just breaks my heart that zuko still doesn’t understand that it is harmful to withhold himself from people who care about him #than it is to supposedly protect them from knowing him and being close to him #he makes me so emo hes so emo i love him so much

one of my favorite zuko traits is his bravery. too many people mischaracterize him as a coward. literally the only thing he’s afraid of is his dad. this is the same dude that jumped onto aang’s glider no fucks given in season 1 because he was that desperate to catch him.

#even with his dad he confronted ozai #you can point out all the bad traits about zuko and there are plenty (and we’re talking about a child in the context of canon mind you) #but you can’t call him a coward #i will start biting ankles every time i see someone call him a coward #he’s so much so NOT a coward that you could even go so far as to say he’s brave to a fault and to the detriment of his own wellbeing #leave my bald son alone!!!!!! he’s brave!!!!!!! fuck around and find out is his second title!!!!

i like writing young fire lord zuko because he's still grappling with his identity and he's still in the trenches of his trauma and unlearning the harm done to him and the harm he's done. and something i think is so important for someone who is going through that is that it's not just BAM he's redeemed and he's changing everything for the better and it's perfect. i think it's just as important to highlight zuko's conflict with trying not to Be Like Ozai as it is for people to be wary of zuko because He Is Zuko. like i think he's struggling both with taking up his father's horrible mantle but also with the name he's created for himself. because not only is it "zuko is a victim and he's trying to heal" but it's also "zuko was horrible and he has to reconcile that side of himself with who he wants to be going forward" and that's not easy

#something people often get wrong with zuko in fandom/fics/etc is that like. #he saved katara's life. he's doing great now!!!!! #but he's still? got so many issues and those aren't going away overnight #i wrote a meme where zuko was stressed about coming across as this horrible shadow of his father #'if i give this order will my soldiers think i'm mean and nasty just like ozai????' #the problem is that his soldiers aren't even thinking about ozai (mostly). they're thinking about ZUKO and what he's LITERALLY already done #i don't want to erase the harm zuko's done just as much as i don't want to erase how he's handling coming to terms with the harm done to hi #if this makes sense? am i making sense? KJNSKTRJNHKJSNRTH #like YES poor zuko but also. zuko's got A LOT of reparations of his own to take care of #and he's going to have bad days and he's going to have his little temper tantrums and he's going to lash out #because that's all part of that piece inside of him that's always going to be that hurt teenage boy who longs for his father's love!! #it doesn't make him less worthy of his redemption. it just gives him more nuance #i love him i LOVE him. my sad angry hurting little fire hazard </3

anywho zuko suffers from unilateral hearing loss in his left ear, making him HOH, and he knows chinese sign which he incorporates into his bending technique as he gets older

Still,    the  only  true threat  is  the  defensive  stature  they  both  take  on  at  the  sight  of  one  another.    They  cross  paths  perhaps  on  accident,    but  the  Myth  in  the  mask  spares  Fate  no  doubt  for  its  role  in  his  journey.    Zuko  does  not  split  his  blade  in  two  yet;    instead  he  wields  his  dao  sword  in  one  hand,    the  tang  parallel  to  his  body  as  he  keeps  it  flush  to  his  side.    Like  this,    the  Executioner  can  see  the  weapon,    but  it  is  not  yet  leveled  at  them  in  the  offensive.

The  air  has  gone  thick  with  apprehension.    Every  soldier  posted  guard  at  a  door  is  half  in  motion  as  if  unconvinced  that  coming  to  their  aid  is  an  order  they  ought  not  execute.    They  are  wary  and  it  only  makes  sense  that  they  weave  caution  into  each  decision  they  make.    What  of  their  old  Fire  Lord  exists  in  his  heir?    Is  it  temper  that  will  meet  their  every  movement?    Is  it  violence  or  rage  or  ash  before  even  a  flame  might  light  with  how  quickly  it  all  could  go  poorly?

There  is  tea  splashed  across  the  table.    The  steam  curls  leisurely  from  the  mess,    as  unaware  as  @warriorled  is  by  the  tension  stiffening  Zuko’s  shoulders.    Around  them,    the  guards  are  still  trying  to  guage  the  right  move;    Zuko,    too,    doesn’t  know  how  to  proceed  for  a  moment  too  long.    Is  it  weakness  they  will  see  if  he  does  not  urge  them  to  do  something?    Is  it  fear  he  will  instill  in  them  if  he  gives  an  order  at  all?    What  would  his  Uncle  do?    Make  a  joke,    probably.
