in my time lurking the radqueer community before i joined, i saw plenty of accounts i suspected were bait. some later did come out as bait accounts while others were just people trying to live their best lives in a way that bait accounts typically mock. so i’ve come to the conclusion that i would rather believe that a hundred bait accounts were being genuine and then be proven wrong than ever disbelieve one person who i thought was bait but wasn’t. taking advantage of people’s trust isn’t the flex you think it is, anyway.

something i learned outside of radqueer spaces that i feel like applies here too is that no matter who you are, people will always want you to feel shame for being the way you are. homophobes want queer folk to be ashamed of being queer, transphobes want trans folk to be ashamed of being trans. if you like boys, there are people who want you to feel ashamed of your attraction (eg. terfs). if you are a paraphiliac, people want you to be ashamed of that. if you are ashamed of your attraction or your identity, you are slightly more respectable to your oppressors and abusers. the shame is not worth the conditional respect.

the most powerful thing you can do is refuse to be ashamed of who you are. pride is powerful. the conditional respect of your oppressors and abusers is not worth hiding parts of who you are and the toll shame takes on your mental health. your identity is not shameful.
