A sneak peak of my first Orc Love story

He was a seasoned scout and a good fighter in his own right, but he’d been so caught up in knicking a few vegetables that someone managed to come up on him. He had good reason to be wary of a stranger at his back and he looked towards the woods longingly. If he abandoned the extra weight of the vegetables in the bag would he be able to run fast enough and far enough to get away?

“I suppose you must be hungry.” The voice that spoke up sounded annoyed and he couldn’t help but think of his mother when he was young and tracked dirt into the house.  

He felt the broad swath of a broom bumping against his side and carefully turned around with the movement, still crouched on the ground.  The woman that he saw standing behind him looked like a matronly sort. Her hair was loosely tied up in a bun and she had on a plain dress with a dirty apron. There were spatterings of flour on it so he assumed that she had just been inside making bread or something before she caught him out here. Raising his hands up a little higher, he did his best to smile at her, wanting to calm her down before she started trouble for him.

“And are you taking food just for you, or do you have friends out there?” She gently pushed him with the broom, unbalancing him so he fell on his bottom.

“Friends.” He answered quietly.  “We just needed a little, ma’am.  We won’t be here long.  My brothers and I, we’re fighting with the minotaur.”

“Oh I know about them.” The woman set her broom on the ground and leaned on it, grimacing.  “They steal my vegetables too! They’re also the reason why I don’t have any chickens left.”

“I didn’t touch any of your animals.” He assured her hastily.
