This party's shit, wish we could dip
Go anywhere but here
Please don't drink more beer
I'ma crawl outta the window now
'Cause I don't like anyone around
Kinda hope you're followin' me out
But this is definitely not my crowd
You used to love this. The parties, the drinking until you made decisions that you would regret in the morning but laugh about later, the meeting a new stranger every night and flirting with no intention of anything real or lasting. But now you hated this. The music was too loud and the people were louder. The heat from bodies cramped together dancing and making out made it hard to breathe.
“It’ll just be us and a couple of the guys.” That’s what Jamie had said and you were fine with that, you were looking forward to it.
Honestly you should’ve known better. You should’ve figured it out when he insisted on taking your car, saying it was more comfortable. Looking back you were mad at yourself for being so naive.
When he pulled up to the house you knew you couldn’t drink even if you wanted to. Someone had to drive home because he wouldn’t be able to, he was never able to be the one who drove home after nights like this. You looked down at the cup in your hand, just water.
You wanted to leave more than anything. You didn’t care where you went you just didn’t want to be at this stupid party. Maybe tonight would be the night that he would want to leave just as much as you did. Maybe he was having a horrible time and wanted to go home and just put on some cheesy movie until you both fell asleep. You needed to find him.
You scanned the crowd from the corner you had decided to stay in, looking for him. You knew exactly where he’d be but a small part of you wanted to believe tonight was different so you still searched everywhere but there. Finally you gave in and looked at where the liquor was. You felt any hope you had of him wanting to leave slip away. There he was, grabbing another beer.
“Jamie, please don’t,” you whispered. “Just put it back down.” You were begging that somehow he would magically hear you.
You knew that you’d never make it over in time to stop him so you were praying that maybe he had just enough sense to stop himself. But he didn’t. Your heart deflated as you watched his lips make contact with the bottle. You had to look away before your heart broke anymore.
You scanned the crowd again. Each new face you looked at was a complete stranger. You needed to leave. You knew none of these people and few that you did know were scattered everywhere, hidden in the sea of people who were all drinking, smoking, and dancing. If you were doing the same you’d probably want to stay. But you weren’t.
Nineteen, but you act twenty-five now
Knees weak, but you talk pretty fly, wow
Ripped jeans and a cup that you just downed
Take me where the music ain't too loud
Trade drinks, but you don't even know her
You tried to think back to when this whole cycle started. It was never like this before, so what was the turning point? You didn’t want to admit that getting drafted was the turning point but if you were being honest with yourself, you knew that’s exactly when everything changed, when he changed. You loved that he was getting to live his dreams but hated that the cost of that was losing himself. He was a kid thrown into a world of screaming fans and constant requests for pictures and autographs and he felt like he had to act a certain way in order to make it.
You were at your limit for the night and you had to leave and get as far away from this party as possible. You let out a deep breath, preparing yourself to push through the crowd. It was now or never.
You entered the crowd. You tried to be soft and polite at the beginning. Saying excuse me and waiting for people to move out of your way on their own. A few people stepped aside and let you pass, but most didn’t, they were too caught up in their own little worlds. The nice way wasn’t going to work.
“Get out of my way,” you yelled repeatedly as you forcefully pushed people out of the way, not caring that they were gross and sweaty. You could hear, “Fuck you” or “What the fuck?”, being yelled in a never ending cycle with the occasional, “Bitch,” to spice things up. You couldn’t have cared less about their words or feelings, all you cared about was getting the hell out of there.
When you made it out of the crowd you could finally breathe again. You raised one hand to your chest as the other ran through your hair and sighed. You looked up and there he was. His back was facing towards you and it was almost like he was permanently attached to the bar where the alcohol was set up.
You walked up to him and softly tapped his arm to get his attention. He turned with the biggest smile on his face. He shouted your name in glee.
“There you are!” He exclaimed and pulled you in for a hug. He reeked of alcohol, it was too much for you to handle, you had to pull away. “I missed you.” He pouted when you looked up at him.
“Yeah I missed you too,” you muttered. You watched as he turned to grab something and turned back with a cup in his hand.
“You wanna drink?” He held his hand out and his words were slurring together. You looked at the cup then back to Jamie’s face.
“I can’t drink anything,” you sighed.
“Why not?”
“Because someone has to drive home,” you were trying your hardest not to snap.
“Right, right,” his eyes glanced down at the cup before he quickly downed it. You wanted to scream. He tried to go back to his beer but you grabbed it from him and placed it out of his reached. “Hey, I wasn’t done with that!”
“Can we please go home?” You asked as you stopped him from trying to get another drink.
You wanted to give him an opportunity to show that he was still somewhat himself again. He said nothing but his eyes looked at something behind you. You watched as Jamie stopped a random girl that was walking by.
“Can I have that?” He pointed at her cup. The girl giggled and nodded before handing it over. “Thanks,” Jamie smirked then winked, his drunk confidence taking over.
Your jaw dropped in disbelief as Jamie went to take a sip of the random drink. This was a new all time low. You raised your hand and smacked the cup out of his grip before he could. You watched as the liquid landed on some poor boy just trying to get a beer. You whispered a small apology. You turned to look at Jamie and saw that he was laughing at what just happened.
He wasn’t himself, he was completely and utterly wasted. You were once again going to have to drag him out of a party. You grabbed Jamie’s elbow and pushed past the girl and pushed through the crowd like you did before, much more forcefully this time.
“I don’t want to leave,” you could hear him whine as you made it outside. You finally stopped at the sidewalk.
“I know you don’t but you have to,” you sighed and turned to him. When you looked at him you could see that he was still adamant about staying. “Jamie please,” you whispered, practically on your knees begging. You watched as his eyes scanned your face for awhile.
“Okay,” he finally agreed.
Save me 'til the party is over
Kiss me in the seat of your Rover
Real sweet, but I wish you were sober
The alcohol hadn’t completely hit yet so he could still somewhat walk on his own, only needing a little bit of help. When you made it to your car you let out a breath of relief. You went to open the passenger door and watched as he stumbled his way towards you.
“Come on let’s get you buckled up,” you helped him climb his way into the car. You felt like a mother taking care of her child right now and you hated it.
“You’re my best friend, you know that right?” He asked as you got him sat.
It was starting. Most nights Jamie would run off at the beginning of the night, completely abandoning you. It was only afterwards that he finally acknowledged you, and tonight was one of those night.
“Yes, I know. You’re my best friend too,” you smiled, trying to just go along with his drunk rambling.
He hummed, feeling satisfied and happy that he was also your best friend. You grabbed the seatbelt and leaned over to buckle it. You felt his lips kiss your cheek. It was sloppy and wet. The first time this happened you felt butterflies and your body felt like it was on fire. Now it was just another one of his drunken habits.
“That was really sweet,” you said as you checked the seatbelt one last time.
When you pulled away to shut the door you saw that he had a big goofy smile on his face.
All of this would mean something if he was sober, and you wished more than anything that he was.
Trip down the road, walking you home
You kiss me at your door
Jamie spent most of the drive talking, you couldn’t understand him half of the time but it kept him occupied so you just let him continue. When you pulled into the driveway you took a moment to prepare yourself.
This part was always hard. The alcohol had caught up with him. He was a mess who could barely walk on his own. Having to help a drunk, 180lbs, hockey player walk to his room never got easier, even if you’ve done it almost 100 times. For now you wanted to just focus on getting him to the front door. You walked over to unbuckle him.
“Okay I’m gonna need your help, okay? You said as you helped him out. “Put your arm over my shoulder,” you instructed. He nodded his head and dramatically threw his arm over your shoulder. You let out one last breath.
Slowly, and wobbly, you made it to the door. You turned your head up at Jamie. His eyes were lidded and he was softly humming to himself. If you hadn’t seen this a million times before you would be laughing and smiling and finding this adorable.
“Lean against that wall so I can unlock the door.” You place him back against the wall and watched as he slid down. You let out a small groan, before unlocking the door. You pushed it open the turned back to Jamie. “Come on let’s get you back up.” You exasperated.
When he was standing up and leaning against the wall again, you took a moment to collect yourself. You leaned your forehead on his shoulder and felt a tear slip out. You gained your composure before going to look at him again. Jamie took this as an opportunity to quickly give you a kiss. Like the kiss on the cheek earlier, it was sloppy and wet but now it was like you could taste every drink he had drank that night. You pulled away quickly and felt another tear fall. You knew that Jamie wanted to say something but you started to move him before he could.
You kicked the door closed with your foot once you were inside. You looked at the stairs, this was always the difficult part. You readjusted Jamie’s arm and your hold on him. You walked to the stairs and stopped.
“Lean against the railing for me, just a little bit,” you ordered.
“Yes ma’am,” Jamie saluted playfully.
“We’re gonna go one step at a time and we’re gonna do it slowly.”
Pullin' me close, beg me, "Stay over"
But I'm over this roller-coaster
I'ma crawl outta the window now
Getting good at saying, "Gotta bounce"
You kicked open his bedroom door and quickly made it over to his bed. You sat him down and took a moment to regain some strength to keep going. Once you felt okay enough to continue you kneeled down in front of him.
“At least take me to dinner first,” he joked. You just scoffed before taking his shoes off. You walked over to his dresser and grabbed a random pair of sweats and a random shirt.
“Put this on.” You tossed him the clothes. You left before you started to undress.
You walked to the kitchen to get water and some medicine for when he woke up. You leaned against the counter and let out a frustrated sob. Tears you had been trying to hold back started to fall. No, you couldn’t cry yet, you had to make sure he was situated. You splashed some cold water on your face and grabbed the pain medicine and water, grabbing extra for Trevor who obviously wasn’t home yet.
When you returned he was sitting on his bed again. You set down the water and medicine on his nightstand before turning to him
“Stay,” he said softly and he grabbed your hand and pulled you to stand in between his legs. He leaned his head against your stomach and your hands went to run through his hair.
This was the part you hated the most. The part where he asks, sometimes begs, you to stay. The part where it feels like he’s completely sober and himself again. But he wasn’t and you couldn’t stay, you never did, no matter how much you want to.
“I can’t,” you whispered. You gently pulled his head away to look at his face. Knowing that when you saw his face you’d be brought back to reality because his face showed that he was still wasted. You sighed and helped him lay down. You could see he wasn’t happy with your response. “I can come over another night, I have a big test that I have to study for. Not all of us can be professional hockey players,” you forced an excuse and simple joke out of your mouth.
“I think you could make it in the big leagues. You always give Trevor and I a run for our money,” he smiled as he settled into his bed. You smiled softly and watched his eyes close.
You always stayed until he fell asleep just to make sure he was okay. When you heard his breathing even out and soft snores you knew you could go. You walked out and quietly shut the door behind you. When you were halfway down the stairs Trevor walked in. You raised an eyebrow at him and crossed your arms.
“Uber, I promise.” He held his hands up, already knowing what you were about to ask. Satisfied with his words you continued.
“I set out some water and meds for you. They’re on the counter,” you said when you reached the bottom of the stairs.
“You’re literally a saint,” he smiled as he hugged you. You softly laughed before pulling away. When Trevor saw your face up close his smile dropped. “Is he…” He trailed off. You looked back towards his room.
“Yeah,” you whispered. “Can you just text me later and tell me how he’s doing?” You walked to the door.
“Yeah,” he whispered.
“Goodnight Trevor,” you smiled as you walked out.
Honestly, you always let me down
When you got in your car you just sat there for a moment. This was exhausting, life draining almost. You leaned your head against your steering wheel and finally let out the sobs and tears you had been holding in.
You couldn’t wait to get home. You couldn’t wait to take a warm shower and wash the night off of you. You couldn’t wait to lay down in bed and sleep for an entire day. And as much as you hated it, you couldn’t wait to see him again.
He would be himself the next you saw him and it would feel like everything was okay.
“I’m never drinking that much again!” Is what he’s going to say and stupidly you’re going to hope that this time is he was being honest.
But deep, deep down you knew he wasn’t. You knew he was going to do this again and again because he always did. He always let you down in the end.

a/n 2: i wrote this in an hour so pls excuse and grammar or spelling mistakes :)
Tumblr media
Technically you did tell them. You did tell them that last weekend you saw a sweet but scared dog on the side of the road and had to stop and help him before he got hit. You also did tell them that you took him to a shelter to see if he was okay and had a chip, he didn’t. But what you might not have told them was that you had spent that week going and checking to see if the dog had been claimed. You also didn’t tell them that you had also spent that week bonding with him and that you personally named him Donald. ‘Never name them,’ is what everyone says ‘you’ll get attached,’ and boy was that true.
Now here you were inside a pet store with Donald on a leash trailing behind you picking up everything he needed, and way more. You bent down to Donald’s level at the toy section.
“You can pick whatever toy you want,” you smiled as you scratched behind his ear. Donald turned and began to sniff every toy. He walked down the aisle and then stopped, his tail began to wag intensely. “Which one?” You asked. You watched in disbelief as he nudged a duck toy. You picked it up and laughed as his eyes followed, never taking his eyes off of the duck. You didn’t even care when the cashier said the total at checkout. He deserved all of it and more.
On the way home, that you shared with Trevor and Jamie, Donald had his head out the window and you fell in love even more. As you pulled into the driveway you were filled with nerves and excitement.
“Welcome home Donald,” you beamed. You took him inside and let him sniff around and get used to his new surroundings before going to get everything from the car. The boys were at practice so you had plenty of time to get everything set up. Donald followed you the entire time. When you were done you looked down at him. “Let’s get you cleaned up and ready to meet your dad and uncle Trevor.”
Tumblr media
You never really checked Jamie’s location, you completely trusted him and sharing it was more of a safety thing, but today was different. Your eyes never left the little picture of him on find my friends. You needed to know where he was so you could prepare yourself.
He saw he was turning down the street. You quickly got up and led Donald to your room and asked him to lay down. He did. You smiled before running out, leaving the door open just enough.
You made it back to the living room just in time. You heard Trevor laughing at one of his own jokes as they came into view.
“Hey guys!” You said, maybe a bit too enthusiastically. The boys looked at each other before looking back at you.
“Hi,” Trevor drew out as he dropped his bag. “You’re never this excited to see me,” he said suspiciously.
“Baby, what did you do?” Jamie sighed as he dropped his own bag.
“What?! What makes you think I did something? Why would you think I did something? That’s hurtful.” You put your hand on your chest acting like you were hurt by their assumptions. They both just looked at you with raised eyebrows. “Alright, fine! Do y’all remember when I told you I saved that dog last week?” You said. They both slowly nodded. “Well what I didn’t tell you is that I’ve been going and checking on him everyday since then and you know just like hanging out with him.”
“Oh was he claimed?!” Trevor asked hopefully.
“No and the mandatory waiting period for him to be claimed ended today.” You nervously played with your fingers.
“Okay and?” Trevor asked, now confused. You could see that Jamie however was putting the pieces together.
“Baby, are you about to say what I think you’re about to say?” Jamie asked. You smiled nervously.
“Donald!” You said loudly. Suddenly the sound of paws padding against the floor was heard.
“You didn’t,” the boys said in unison.
Donald ran in and instantly ran to the boys. Body swaying side to side in excitement. Trevor bent down and Donald started to lick his face. Jamie on the other hand just looked down in shock.
“Surprise,” you said nervously. Trevor and Jamie looked up at you.
“This is literally the best thing I’ve ever come home from practice to!” Trevor continued petting Donald. Jamie’s eyes were wide with shock.
“Jamie please say something,” you asked, you were scared he was mad. Jamie looked back down and finally he smiled. He bent down and Donald turned to him. You let out a big breath. You watched as both of them played with Donald. “Jamie I love you but please never scare me like that again. I thought you were furious,” you said as you sat down with everyone.
“I was just shocked. I’m sorry,” he looked at you with sympathetic eyes. You just smiled.
“So why is his name Donald?” Trevor asked. You looked at him in disbelief.
“Please tell me you’re joking,” you laughed.
“I was gonna ask the same thing,” Jamie said. You couldn’t believe
“Your team was literally owned by Disney and neither of you get the reference?!” They both looked at each other and shrugged. “I can’t believe this,” you whispered in disbelief. “Guys, ‘Donald Duck’, from Mickey Mouse! You know, the one in a relationship with ‘Daisy Duck’?! The name of the team dog!” You finished. They were both quiet for a moment, a moment too long in your opinion, before they both connected the dots.
“Listen it’s been a long day,” Jamie sighed.
“And I took a puck to the helmet earlier,” Trevor defended himself. You scoffed before gasping, scaring the boys and Donald.
“I’ll be right back!” You said excitedly. You ran to your room and picked up the toy Donald had chosen. You ran back while holding it behind your back. “So I took him to the pet store and let him pick out any toy he wanted and you’ll never believe what he picked!” You finally showed the boys the toy and both their jaws dropped when they saw the duck.
“There’s no fucking way!” Trevor said in disbelief. Wanting to know why he wasn’t getting attention anymore Donald turned towards you and when he saw what you had in your hand he ran up to you in excitement, jumping to get the toy.
You laughed as Jamie and Trevor’s jaws dropped once again.

(you)
Yesterday’s game had been rough. A few unfair calls, more fights than usual, and a lost at the end. Trevor said he needed to go blow off some steam so him, Jamie, and a couple of the other guys were going out. Trevor always invited you out with him, even when he wasn’t really supposed to.
The two of you were laying in your bed. Both naked from the activities that had taken place only minutes ago. No, the two of you weren’t together, you were just best friends and roommates who occasionally hooked up and maybe you felt something more but you’d never never be the first to admit that.
When he asked you to go with him he had to beg you to come, you told him you had some assignments to catch up on but he gave you those stupid puppy dog eyes and pout and you instantly caved.
That’s how you found yourself getting ready to go out. When you went out partying you always loved to get dressed up, it was fun and made you feel amazing. As you looked through your dresses you found the one you had recently bought. It was a little tighter than your other dresses and a lot shorter. This was the perfect opportunity to break it in.
From the bathroom, where you were doing your hair and makeup, you heard Jamie and Trevor walk into your room and fall onto your bed. Nobody said anything, there was just a comfortable silence.
“The Uber is gonna be here in 5,” Trevor finally broke the silence. You made one last finishing touch before walking out of the bathroom. You still didn’t say anything to either of them, and they were too lost in their phones to notice you. You walked to look at your shoe options. You couldn’t decide.
“Guys, which one? These or these?” You faced them and held up two different pairs of heels. For the first time since they had walked into your room they looked at you. Both of their jaws dropped. Jamie quickly closed his mouth then looked at Trevor with a smirk.
“That’s new,” Trevor stuttered. You smiled, surprised that he noticed.
“Yes it is. Do you like it?” You asked, doing a spin to show the whole dress. Trevor just quickly nodded his head. “Now, which pair?” You asked again.
Jamie finally looked back at you and at the shoe options. Trevor was too busy checking you out to help. Thankfully, Jamie wasn’t. With a nod you put on the one he chose. Right on time the Uber driver said they were here.
You sat with Jamie on your left and Trevor on your right. Jamie and you were the only two talking. Trevor was silent, he just stared out the window. You placed your hand on his thigh and felt him tense up making you quickly pull your hand away.
“Are you mad at me?” You asked, genuinely confused as to what was wrong.
“No, not at all,” he said with a forced smile. You weren’t really convinced but you let it go. You nodded before going back to your conversation with Jamie.
When you finally arrived at the club you all got out and Trevor paid and thanked the driver before turning to you and Jamie. He walked to the door, still not really acknowledging you. You looked over at Jamie and he just shook his head and rolled his eyes. You sighed before following.
They led you to where the rest of the group was. After greeting each other you made conversation with some of the girls, from the corner of your eye you could see Trevor trying to act like you weren’t there. You needed a drink. You turned to Jamie.
“I’ll be back.” You walked away after he nodded his head. When you made it to the bar you smiled at the bartender.
“Hey, what can I get you?” He asked.
“I honestly don’t know,” you laughed as you looked at the little laminated menu. He chuckled back and leaned forward on the bar.
“This one is really good if you’re looking for something sweet.” He pointed. “And this one is really good if you’re looking for something strong.”
“Surprise me,” you smiled as you looked up at him. Your faces close but neither of you pulled away.
“One surprise coming right up,” he smiled, finally leaning back to make your drink.
You watched in awe as he made your drink. You felt your cheeks heat up as you two playfully bantered. When he was done he placed it in front of you.
“What’s in it?” You asked as you looked at the drink in front of you.
“You sat here and watched me make it,” he laughed.
“Yeah well I was a little distracted,” you blushed. He just smirked and looked at the drink.
“Just try it.” He leaned forward on the counter, not as close as before but still close enough that you could see that he had freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose.
“You went with sweet,” you said after you took a sip.
“Seemed appropriate.” He winked.
“Now,” you paused and looked at his name tag, “Andrew do you flirt with all of your customers?” You joked as you took another sip.
“Only the cute ones,” his face scrunched up. “God that was so fucking cheesy I hated that.”
You laughed.

(him)
“Guys, which one? These or these?” He heard you ask.
When he looked up and saw you in that dress he felt the air being knocked out of him. His jaw dropped. From the corner of his eye he could see Jamie’s do the same before he quickly composed himself and looked over at him. He could see the smirk on his face and he wanted to punch him.
“That’s new,” he stuttered. He knew every single one of your dresses by memory and this one he had never seen, and it wasn’t like any of your others. This one was shorter and tighter.
“Yes it is. Do you like it?” You asked sweetly as you spun around. He couldn’t say words, he could only nod. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep his feelings a secret. He was only broken from his trance when he heard his phone alert them that the Uber had arrived.
You sat to his left and he couldn’t look at you. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, he wanted to more than anything he just knew that if he did he’d break. He chose to stare out the window instead.
He felt you place your hand on his thigh. It was simple and innocent but still he tensed. You quickly pulled away.
“Are you mad at me?” You asked
“No, not at all,” he forced a smile. He hated that he was making you think he was mad but he didn’t know what else to do. You just nodded and turned back to Jamie. He knew this night was going to be difficult and he didn’t know if he was ready for it.
When you all arrived at the club everyone got out as he quickly paid and said thank you. When he turned he just looked straight ahead and walked in, maybe if he ignored you he’d be able to ignore the growing feelings inside of him.
Quickly he greeted everyone before grabbing one of the unopened beers on the table. He didn’t look at you, even when he could see you looking at him. Finally, he saw you walk away and he felt like he could breathe again. He looked over at Jamie and Jamie rolled his eyes before pulling him over.
“Are you gonna sit here and ignore her all night?” He asked.
“I’m not ignoring her,” he lied and Jamie only scoffed
“Are you gonna stop being a pussy and tell her how you actually feel?” He looked over at you before turning back quickly.
“Dude I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I’m talking about how you’re in love with her and have been for awhile now,” he casually responded.
“What are you talking about? Me in love with her?! No!” His tried to play it cool but he failed, tremendously.
“Okay so if I told you that she’s over there flirting with the bartender you wouldn’t care right?”
He quickly snapped his head to the bar so hard that it hurt but he didn’t care. He saw as the bartender handed you a drink before laughing at something you said. Was that a smirk on his lips? Why was he leaning in? Why was he winking at you? What did he say that could have made you laugh like that? He didn’t like any of that at all.
He turned his head back around and felt his body heat up.
“Nope I don’t care. She’s just a friend,” he lied once again.
“You’re so full of shit,” Jamie scoffed. “Can you please just put us all out of our misery and just admit it so we can end this whole pining situation?” Trevor needed to go clear his head.
“I’m going to the bathroom,” he muttered. He set his beer down and for the first time he realized just how tight he had been gripping it. He made sure to not look if your direction as he passed by.

(you)
You honestly didn’t know how long you had sat here talking, but you didn’t mind. You were enjoying his company. The only pauses in your conversation was when Andrew had to go help another customer.
“Would it be completely inappropriate to give you my number?” Andrew asked when he returned.
“No, it wouldn’t.” You watched as he searched for a pen and grabbed an unused napkin. Quickly he wrote his number down before handing it over. You looked it over before setting it back down, hoping not to lose it. Before you could continue the conversation you felt someone walk up right next to you. You looked up and saw Trevor. You rolled your eyes before looking back at Andrew.
“What can I get you man?” Andrew asked politely. Trevor didn’t say anything he just looked down at the napkin with a phone number on it. He picked it up before turning it over to clean up a small spill.
“What the fuck?” You gasped. When he turned the napkin back around and saw that the number was smudged and illegible he smiled.
“Yeah, can I just get another beer,” Trevor looked up at Andrew, who also couldn’t believe what just happened.
“There is plenty extra ones at the table so go get one of those,” you said through gritted teeth.
“I don’t want any of those,” he shrugged simply. He had no right to be acting like this. You hopped off the stool.
“Andrew I’m sorry,” you apologized. “I’ll be right back.” You grabbed Trevor’s wrist.
“I wouldn’t count on it Andrew,” Trevor said. You tugged him harder. When you made it outside you were glad the streets were almost empty. You dropped his wrist harshly before turning towards him with your arms crossed.
“What the hell was that?!” You asked annoyed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said like a child. You scoffed in disbelief.
“Yes you do. I was having a good time with Andrew and you walked over and ruined that.” He rolled his eyes when you said Andrew’s name.
“Oops.”
“If you’re going to act like a child fine whatever I don’t care just leave me alone.” You walked past him to go back inside.
“He’s not good for you,” he said loudly.
“You have no right to say that. You didn’t even properly talk to him. You acted like a dick.” You turned back around. “First you ignore me in the car and then you ignore me inside and when I finally start having a little fun and I’m really getting along with someone you come over and interrupt!”
“I couldn’t.”
“Couldn’t what?! Acknowledge me? Let me have some fun? Last time I checked Trevor we weren’t exclusive.”
“Yeah you don’t have to remind me,” he whispered hoping you didn’t hear, but you did. That’s when it hit you. You smirked and Trevor rolled his eyes. “What?”
“You know I always knew you were the jealous type.” You stepped closer to him. He gulped.
“Me jealous?! I’m not jealous,” he stuttered.
“Oh so if I went back in there and got Andrew’s number again you wouldn’t care right?” You pointed behind you and took a few step backwards.
“Nope,” he squeaked.
“Okay cool I’ll be right back.” You turned but before you could even take one step he stopped you.
“Please don’t,” he pleaded. You turned to him.
“Why not?”
“Please don’t make me say it,” he whined.
“Say it,” you needed to hear the words come from his mouth.
“You know I’m not good at this stuff.”
“I need to hear you tell me why you don’t want me to go back in there. I need to hear you say it so I know it’s real.” You walked up to him. You grabbed his hand and you felt him relax.
“I don’t want you to go back in there because I don’t want you to flirt or go out anyone else,” he paused and looked you in the eyes. “I don’t want because I want us to be together. I love you, way more than a friend,” his voice was low but you could tell he meant every word he was saying. He closed his eyes, not know how you’d react to his confession, preparing himself for the worst.
“You don’t know how long I’ve waited to hear you say those words,” you smiled softly. His eyes shot open.
“If this is some sick joke it’s not funny,” he said in disbelief.
“Do I look like I’m joking?” He looked at your face and saw nothing but adoration. He let out a sigh. “This is the part where you kiss me,” you joked. Trevor wasted no time. His lips were on yours in a heartbeat. Both of you smiled into the kiss. Finally you both pulled away.
“Can we please go home because if we go back in there I might end up punching Andrew in the face,” he said as he placed his forehead against yours. You giggled, knowing he was only slightly joking.

I stopped looking for your truck
Every time I go somewhere
I don't scroll through the past anymore
It had been months and finally he was almost completely out of your mind. You didn't catch yourself looking for his bronco every time you left the house. You use to spend hours looking around trying to find it. Now you didn't even think about looking.
You didn't spend hours scrolling through your camera roll, remembering how it was. The photos had finally been deleted. Erased from your phone.
I'm finally putting on the shirt I like
Tight jeans, big hoops with my hair up high
It was your birthday. It was your day. The music was blasting through your speakers. Your best friends performing synchronized dance routines when you got back with the drinks for pre-gaming. Laughter filled the air. This is what you wanted for the rest of the night, for the rest of your life. No drama, no crying, no heartbreak.
You started doing your makeup while Sarah did your hair. Jacob was pouring shots and Emma was digging through your closet looking for what you were going to wear. 'Birthday sex is the goal tonight,' she had said earlier and honestly you weren't opposed to the idea. Sure it had been ages since you tried or thought about looking for a random hookup but you had always been good at it in the past. You’d be a little rusty but that wasn’t anything a few shots couldn’t fix.
"And we..." Sarah dragged out as she did some final touches on your hair, "are done!" She clapped. You made some final touches on your makeup before turning to your three best friends. They all broke out in applause. You bowed at their applause playfully.
"And now for the outfit." Emma smiled as she handed it to you.
You took a peek and saw the shirt laying on top of the folded pile. It was your old favorite clubbing and bar hopping top. The one that didn't leave much to the imagination and you loved it. The jeans she had picked showed off every curve. The chunky heeled boots tied everything together. You smirked. Birthday sex was the goal and you were definitely going to be scoring tonight.
"Time for accessories and shots!" Emma held out a pair of hoop earrings in one hand and a shot in the other. You gladly took the shot glass from her hand and threw it back. Your friends cheered before taking their own.
When everyone's shot were gone Emma, Sarah, and Jacob looked at each other with smirks. Jacob raised his eyebrows in question, and Emma nodded her head.
"You know I hate whatever is going on right now," you said as you squinted your eyes. You watched as Jacob and Sarah ran out of your room like they were running a marathon. "And I really hated that," you pointed. "What are y'all up to?"
"Don't worry about it," Emma smiled. "Turn around and close your eyes, I'm gonna lead you to the kitchen."
You huffed before turning around. As she led you backwards you could hear Sarah and Jacob shuffling around and whispering to each other. Finally Emma stopped and stepped away from you then the noises stopped.
"Turn around!" They yelled in unison. When you turned you saw Jacob holding a cake with 22 candles on it, Sarah held a birthday sash, and Emma had a birthday tiara. Tears welled in your eyes. Your heart melted. They began to sing happy birthday to you. You felt so much happiness in this moment, you felt so much love.
"Make a wish," Sarah whispered. You closed your eyes and tried to think of something. When you did you blew out the candles and smiled.
"Fuck you guys, you're gonna make me cry and ruin my makeup," you joked. They all put down what they were holding and ran up to you. "I love you guys so much." The group hug was a little suffocating but you didn't care. You all pulled away and Sarah checked to see if your makeup was still in tact.
"Put these on so we can go get black out drunk!" Emma squealed and grabbed the sash and tiara.
"I'm sorry but she is not wearing the tiara," Sarah said as she grabbed the sash and carefully put it on you.
"Why not?" Emma questioned
"Because I spent forever on her hair and I am not going to let anything ruin it." You and Jacob leaned forward against the counter and watched as Emma and Sarah playfully argued. Jacob bumped your shoulder.
"What'd you wish for?" He asked softly before swiping a finger full of icing from the cake.
"Even if I wanted to tell you, which I don't, Sarah would kill me. You know how she is about these kinds of things," you smiled.
"Fair enough," he bumped you again before standing up straight. "Okay, okay come on you two. She's wearing the sash that's good enough, now let's go," Jacob ushered us all to the door. Emma accepted defeat.
The walk to the bar was filled with laughter and linked arms. You couldn't wait, this bar had been your favorite bar since that night you randomly wondered into it. Sure it could get packed but the atmosphere was amazing. It felt warm and welcoming, but also alive and crazy and you loved it. You loved it so much and came so often that you even became friends with the owner, Will.
When you walked through the doors you flinched when you heard a loud 'Happy Birthday!' being screamed in your ear.
"Jesus Christ I think I just had a heart attack!" You huffed grabbing your chest. You looked up and saw Will. "Are you trying to kill your favorite regular?" You punched his arm.
"I would never! Who would drink all of my bottom shelf liquor?" He joked as he pulled in for a hug. You knew he was right so you didn't argue. He bent down to whisper in your ear. "All your drinks are on the house tonight just don't tell any of the people who offer to buy you a birthday drink." You looked up at him and laughed. "Hey, I gotta make some money before you drink me dry."
"Walk away before I punch you," you joked. You turned to your friends and huddled up. "Drinks on the house but I accept any and all birthday drink offers." You smiled. Emma pulled away immediately and put her fists in the air.
"To the bar!" She marched and dragged you all with her.
It was times like these that you were thankful you had such a high alcohol tolerance because you didn't know how many drinks you had been bought, and honestly you were okay with that. You got free alcohol and Will got money. A win-win.
You didn't even care that your feet were starting to hurt from all the dancing, you just wanted to keep going. You had jumped from dance partner to dance partner, and you didn't feel like stopping. You didn't remember the name of your current partner. You didn't care, it didn't matter. Before things could escalate Sarah ran up and grabbed your arm.
"I'm so sorry, I know y'all are really busy right now but I need to steal her," Sarah apologized. You didn't even get a chance to say anything before she dragged you off
"Sarah you're kinda hurting my arm."
"I'm sorry but we need to leave. Like right now." She pulled us all the way to the booth Jacob was at. You saw him gathering everyone's belongings.
"What why?! I don't want to leave. I wanna stay here. I'm having so much fun and I might end up having that birthday sex we talked about earlier," You smirked and wiggled your eyebrows.
"Guys guess who's here!" Emma screaming while she was running over to the booth. When she saw you her mouth instantly closed, she must've thought you were still dancing.
Now you needed to know who was here.
The least you could've done was give me the bar tonight
There was a group of guys, but only one stood out to you. His back was facing you but you didn't need to see his face to know who it was. Trevor Zegras. You couldn't believe it. He knew what today was. He knew what this place meant to you. He knew you'd be here tonight.
As much as that voice inside your head was telling you to leave, you didn't want to listen. This was supposed to be your day. You saw him turn around in your direction but you quickly looked away before you could make eye contact. You let out a big breath.
"It is my goddamn birthday. This is my goddamn bar. And I am going to stay and celebrate. I'm over him," you were sure of it. You had to be.
Sarah, Jacob, and Emma looked at each other, not believing you one bit.
"Are you sure?" Jacob asked.
"Yes, I'm sure," you responded quickly, maybe too quickly. "I gonna go get another drink!" You tried to sound excited, you weren’t convincing but before any of them could saying anything you ran to the bar.
You could've stayed with the guys, acting like you didn't see me
But you had to walk up, messing me up
"The usual?" Will asked.
"Not this time. I need something strong. Like really, really strong and please make it a double,” you begged then sat on one of the bar stools placing your head in your hands. You heard the glass being placed in front of you.
"Take this one slow please," Will said. You stood up.
"Yes, sir." You saluted, trying to keep things light and your spirit bright. You turned to walk back to your friends but you collided with something, with someone. You prayed to the universe that it wasn't him. You begged for it not to be him. But you could tell from his cologne that it was, the tattoos on his arm only serving as complete confirmation. You refused to look up. You just continued to stare and your now soaked top.
"Here." He tried handing you some napkins. No, no you couldn't be here. You shoved past him and ran to the bathroom.
I thought that I was moving on, but now I'm starting back over again
Why'd you have to come back in right then
Right when I was just getting good and gone
This wasn't supposed to happen. You had gotten over him. You were moving on. But now all of that progress and healing was being destroyed. All he did was walk into a bar and it started all over again. It was hurting like it was the night that everything ended. The night you caught him with another girl in the bed you two shared.
You felt like you couldn't breathe, your heart was racing, and your legs were about to give out.
Your friends, you needed to call your friends. You searched your pockets for your phone but it wasn't there. You had left it on the bar.
"Fuck!" You screamed.
You had to get out of here as quickly as possible. You had to make a run for the door. You could make it back to your apartment and use your laptop to FaceTime Sarah and tell her where you were. That was the plan, it was the only plan you could think of right now.
You took a few quick breaths before putting your head down and left of the bathroom. You didn't care if you accidentally bumped into someone as you made your escape. You only cared about getting out of there.
Stepping outside felt like heaven. You were free and you could breathe again. You leaned back against the brick wall to catch your breath.
That breath was quickly taken away again when he ran out to door, looking for you. He turned to you and you instantly turned to speed away. You made it a few feet before he yelled.
"I have your phone!" You stopped but you didn't turn around.
"I don’t care. Go give it to Will, or Sarah, Jacob, Or Emma." You couldn't look at him.
"Why would I do that when you're right here?" His voice was closer, much closer.
"Trevor…" saying his name out loud for the first time in months felt like you were speaking a foreign language. "Please walk away. Turn around and leave me alone." When you didn't hear retreating footsteps but felt a hand on your shoulder you wanted to scream again.
You must've heard I was moving on
You turned and looked at him for the first time since that night. The pictures in your phone you use to look at didn't count. You couldn't reach out and touch him like you could right now.
"What are you doing here?" Your voice sounded weak and you hated it.
"It's your birthday," he stated like it was obvious. You wanted to punch him.
"Be serious Trevor, why are you really here?"
"A friend of mine was here earlier and he told me you were here. Said you were drinking and dancing with anybody and everybody." He put the hand not holding your phone into his pocket and shrugged slightly.
"You heard that I was having fun, that I was moving on and you decided that you couldn't let that happen?!" You scoffed.
He said nothing he just looked down at your phone and saw that the polaroid of the two of you at one of Jack's bonfires wasn't in the back of your phone case anymore. He turned it over and saw your lockscreen was no longer the picture of you and him hugging after the game he shot his first big league goal.
"If you’re here to give me my phone, then please just hand it over and leave," you tried to sound demanding but you came up short.
He held it out to you. Your fingers touched as you grabbed it making you grab your phone and pull away as fast as you could. Fuck. It was all about to pour out of you.
I'm all about you
When I was just about, just about over you
I was just about, just about over you
"I was so close to being over you," you screamed. "So fucking close! And then you walked into my favorite bar on my fucking birthday. I wasn't looking for you and your stupid bronco every time I left the house anymore. All of the pictures and videos of you were deleted." You had to stop to breathe properly. You walked closer to him. "It's been 9 months. I haven’t partied in 9 months and when I finally do you decide that I can't?! That I can’t go out and have fun. That I don't get to finally be happy again. You decide that I should spend the rest of my life heartbroken over you. Fuck you! You are so fucking selfish!” You hit his chest over and over again.
“Okay that’s enough,” he said as he grabbed your wrists to stop you from hitting him again.
“I deserve to be happy! I didn't say a thing when I heard you were out partying every night for weeks on end, hooking up with a new girl every time. I let you be. I didn't show up and ruin things for you. Though I guess there wasn't anything for me to ruin. You were already over our relationship before it even ended.”
“That’s not true,” he interrupted.
“Yes it is! But I wasn't. I had to work to get over it and I almost completely over you and now I'm gonna be hung up on you again for god knows how long. You have ruined all of the success I made, I have to start over! So if that was your mission coming here tonight then congratulations Trevor! Mission accomplished!" You couldn't see through your tears. Everything was a blur and you were thankful because you couldn't look at him. You pulled your wrists away from his grasp and stumbled backwards.
You heard the bar door swing open and even though you couldn't see you knew who it was. Sarah and Emma came to your side. You couldn't stand anymore. Your legs had given out. You collapsed onto the ground and although Emma and Sarah desperately tried to catch you, they couldn’t.
"Trevor, I really need you to leave right now before I end up going to jail for aggravated assault." You heard Will say through gritted teeth. You saw another figure walk towards you and you knew it was Jacob. He grabbed you and pulled you up.
"Let's get you home and get some sleep." He whispered sweetly.
You were mentally, emotionally, and physically drained. You needed to sleep. You needed all the rest you could get because if you were going to have to relive the past 9 months. The pain, the suffering, the heartache. The crying, the screaming, the constant thoughts that you weren't good enough. If you were going to have to get over Trevor Zegras all over again, you needed all the energy you could get.

He had been acting weird for weeks, shutting you out, not explaining why. But now here you were, at some Ducks charity event and the only thing you cared about was that you couldn't take much more of this. You couldn't take downing another glass of champagne hoping to get drunk enough to convince yourself that this was all in your head. That you were not losing him. You tried to look over at him but his back was turned to you. You needed to get out of here.
"I'm gonna step out to get some air," you whispered to Jamie. You didn't wait for a response, you couldn't you needed to get out of there as fast as possible.
You walked out the front door to the covered patio and saw the rain pouring down. You sighed deeply before leaning back against the wall. The door opened and you should have been happy that it was Trevor but you only wanted to scream. You pushed yourself off the wall and walked past him. You stopped then turned to see that he was sheepishly making his way towards you.
"I'm sorry," was all he whispered.
"Sorry for what exactly?"
"I don't know." He looked down and his shoes. You scoffed.
"You don't know? Wow. Well do you at least know why you've been shutting me out for weeks now?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know why you're still here," he muttered, before trying to walk away only making it a few steps before you yelled at him and he turned around.
"Stop saying you're sorry if you don’t know what you’re sorry for! I am still here in this stupid dress and these stupid heels for you! And now I am still here in the cold for you! Because I don't want you to leave. Because I want to be there for you and help you through whatever is going on. Because I love you!"
His silence was louder than the thunder surrounding you. If he wasn't going to respond, you were going to continue saying what you’ve been holding in for weeks.
"I am here because we both said that we wanted each other from now until we're both old and grey. That is supposed to be our future together and shutting me out and running away will ruin it all. So please just let me back in, let me help you with whatever is going on. We can leave right now and go home and talk, please." You were begging. You were begging him to stay.
"No," he finally spoke. Oh, that wasn't what you wanted him to say. "I'm not good enough for you. I'm a screw up and I have done nothing but let you down. You're better off without me." He turned back around to walk away.
"Who says you're not good enough for me?! When did I say you let me down?! Please tell me when I said that because I don't remember."
"You didn't have to."
"No, don't you dare pull that, 'I didn't have to' bullshit! I didn't have to because I have never felt, said or even thought that you let me down."
"I'm sorry," he apologized for the third time as he turned away from you for the second time.
"Say it." You ran after him into the pouring rain and grabbed his arm. "Say it right now."
"Say what?" He tried not turn around this time but you forced him to.
"That we're over. That this is the end. That you are breaking up with me," your voice kept on breaking, those words tasted like poison in your mouth.
"Please don't make me," he whispered.
"No say it! If you are strong enough to turn around and walk away while I am here in the pouring rain begging you to stay then you are strong enough to actually say it and if you won't say it I will."
"I can't."
"You walking away with no explanation will be the first time you've let me down. It means that I have wasted years of my life and my love on you. It makes you a coward, Trevor Zegras" He almost took a step towards you but he took a few steps back instead. "If you walk away right now that is the end. You can never come back. No second chances, no do overs, nothing. We're over," you screamed, thankful that the rain was hiding your tears.
"I have to." That's it. That was the moment your heart completely shattered.
"Fine, then take this with you." You marched up to him and ripped the promise ring off your finger and held it out to him.
"No, please keep that," he softly pleaded.
"No. This ring was supposed to mean forever and you've ruined that. There is no forever for you and me anymore. So take this stupid ring and go." He still wouldn't take it. Finally tired of waiting you grabbed his arm and forced it into his hand.
You looked at him one last time, before walking away.
"Please," you could hear him cry from behind you.
It was too late.
He had made his choice.
He had let you go.

i don’t know // jack hughes
Tumblr media
pairing: jack hughes × reader
word count: 1.2k
warnings: mentions of hands and fingers accidentally getting cut off by ice skate (doesn’t go into detail)
a/n: i wrote this in like ten minutes so i don’t really know how good it is
Tumblr media
You heard the door open before the sound of keys falling on the small hallway table and a heavy bag being dropped on the floor. You placed the book you were reading on the coffee table.
"Honey, I'm home!" He joked
"Living room," you quickly responded as you rolled your eyes with a playful smile.
You waited for him to appear in the living room. Once he did he smiled before quickly walking to you giving you a kiss. You giggled when he pulled away and laid on top of you, trying and hoping not to crush you.
"How was practice?" You asked as you began to run your fingers through his hair. He just groaned and buried his face in your neck. "That bad, huh?"
"I mean, it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good," he mumbled from your neck.
You just sat there in comfortable silence. That silence broke when he quickly sat up in excitement, pushing against you and crushing you. You groaned loudly and curled your body. He looked at you with wide and sympathetic eyes.
"Babe, I am so sorry!" He quickly stuttered as he helped you sit up.
"What was so exciting that you had to crush me before telling me?" You muttered, still a bit winded. He mumbled another sorry when he saw your face up close.
"There's gonna be this fundraiser event down at the arena and they're gonna let people just come and skate with the team. They're also gonna have all these cool booths and prizes and I was really hoping you'd come," his eyes were filled with so much hope and yours were filled with so much dread.
"Would I have to skate?" You asked trying seem nonchalant.
"I mean that's kinda the whole point," he said.
"Yeah, no, I'm sorry. I'm gonna be busy that day," You quickly said before going back to your book.
"I haven't even told you when it's gonna be."
"When is it?" You asked still not looking up at him.
"This Saturday," his voice was questioning and suspicious.
"Yup I have this thing with…you know...Monica from-" before you could finish he gently ripped the book from your hands making you finally look at him. "Hey! Give that back!" You tried reaching for it but he quickly moved it to the other hand.
"No," he said like a child refusing to share their toy. Finally he raised his arm with the book in his hand above his head. You tried jumping for it but your efforts were futile.
"Maybe you actually are 5'11," you said as you crossed your arms. His jaw dropped.
"You know what, I'm going to let that one slide. Now why won't you come this Saturday?"
"Like I said, I have a work thing," you said, your eyes wondering everywhere, never making eye contact with Jack.
"You're lying."
"No I'm not!" Eyes still focused elsewhere.
"Yeah you are, you avoid eye contact when you lie and you start tapping your foot." He pointed. Both of you looked down and saw that your foot was indeed tapping. You forcefully stopped it. "Now answer my question because my arm is starting to go numb," he begged. you didn't say anything, hoping he'd give up before you could say anything. But, when you finally looked at him and his stupid puppy dog eyes you caved.
"Fine!" You groaned as you fell down on the couch. "I don't know how to skate," you whispered, almost completely inaudible.
"Babe you have to speak up." He sat next to you but not before tossing your book across the room. You watched as it slid across the floor.
"I don't know how to skate," you mumbled, only a little bit louder.
"Come on, I'm not gonna let this go until you tell me and I can actually hear and understand what you’re saying. I will literally become the most annoying human being alive if I have to."
"Can't become what you already are." You rolled your eyes, falling back on the couch.
"I'm also gonna let that one slide." He turned his body so he could see your face and began to tap your thigh nonstop trying to get you to confess.
"You're acting like a child right now."
"I know." He shrugged. Finally you had had enough.
"I don't know how to skate!" You almost yelled in an embarrassed tone. You pushed his hand away and faced away from him. It was quiet before his laugh filled the air. It wasn't just a small laugh, it was a loud and annoying laugh. You groaned before standing up and heading to your room. "You better get real comfortable because your sleeping on that couch tonight." You picked up your book.
"No, come back. I didn't mean to laugh," he said while he continued to laugh.
"I'm going to kick you out completely if you don't stop," you threatened. Finally, but slowly, he stopped, holding his stomach and wiping away a few tears
"Okay I'm calm now." He let out a big breath to fully calm himself. "Now what do you mean you 'don't know how to skate'?"
"I think my statement was pretty straightforward."
"Babe, I am literally a hockey player. I skate for a living and you're telling me that you, my girlfriend, don't know how to skate?" He was in shock.
"Well 'must know how to skate' wasn't exactly on the girlfriend application, now was it?" You argued.
"Why didn't you say anything earlier?" He asked as he made his way over to you.
"Exactly for the reasons you said. 'I'm a hockey player. I literally skate for a living,” you mocked his voice. He rolled his eyes as he placed his hand on your waist. “Plus, you just almost died of laughter because I finally told you. This is exactly what I was trying to avoid.”
"Why do you not know how to skate?"
"When I was a kid I was scared I would fall and someone wouldn't be paying attention and would end up slicing my fingers, or my hand off. I didn’t want that so I refused to learn. I'd be fingerless or completely handless. You would have a handless girlfriend. Is that what you want?"
"No, not really. I want you to keep your hands. You do some pretty amazing things with them," he smirked as you punched his shoulder.
"I'm telling you my deepest and darkest secret and you still find a way to turn it around like that," you scoffed and turned to walk away from him.
"Nope, come back, you're not going anywhere." He pulled you back. "Come with me this weekend and I will personally make sure your hands and fingers stay attached to your body and I will teach you how to skate. Please," he begged.
"I don't know," you sighed.
"If you won't do it for me then do it for the children. The poor, sick children who need this fundraiser to help them with their treatments. Could you live with the knowledge that you could've helped them but you didn't?"
"You are a sick and twisted individual," you exclaimed.
"Only sometimes," he joked, still waiting for an answer. His puppy dog eyes were back.
"Fine! Whatever i'll go. But just remember that if I loose my fingers or my hands that you'll have to use your own hand for the rest of your life." He chuckled but then he really imagined it for a second and his face fell. He did not want to risk it.
"We're most definitely getting you a pair of gloves just in case."

Trevor just stood there, his legs wouldn't move, no matter how badly he wanted them to. He wanted to run after you but he couldn't. From his frozen haze he saw Luke run out the door. That should be him running to you and he knew that.
"Everybody out! Party's over!" Jamie yelled. Everyone quickly walked out. Jamie looked over to Nico. “Can you make sure everyone who shouldn't be driving gets an Uber, I'll pay, I don’t even care anymore just please make sure everyone is safe and out of here." Nico nodded and left, dragging a still slightly drunk Jack with him. He would be no help to the conversation about to happen in the state he was in.  Now it was just Jamie, Quinn, and Trevor. Once the front door was shut Quinn forcefully turned Trevor around. He still looked shocked and a few tears had begun to run down his face.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?!" Quinn finally spoke up. Trevor opened his mouth to say something but no words came out.
"If you weren't my best friend I would beat the shit out of you," Jamie said through gritted teeth. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"
"She," Quinn pointed towards the door you had just walked out of, "is like a little sister to me and you just broke her heart in front of an entire party of random strangers." Quinn's voice was calm, too calm, it was frightening. "And you're not my best friend so I will gladly beat the shit out of you." He stepped forward but Jamie stopped him as Trevor finally spoke.
"I didn't mean for this to happen," he whispered.
"What do you mean?! You went into this whole thing knowing you had feelings for her."
"What thing?" Quinn interrupted.
"Do you wanna tell him?" Jamie crossed his arm. Trevor said nothing. "Are you really going to make me tell him?"
"We've been sleeping together," Trevor said softly. Quinn exhaled.
"How long?" He asked.
"Since my birthday," he paused, scared of how Quinn would react after he said his next words, "last year." Quinn saw red. Yes, you were old enough to make your own decisions, but he hated that this decision ended with you in tears and running out the door.
"You've been stringing her along for over a year?!" Quinn's voice got louder with each word.
"No, I swear! I didn't think she felt the same way I did, and if-" Trevor's voice broke.
"Come on, Trevor," Jamie sighed. "You're dumb, but you're not that dumb. Everyone can see that she loves you and you love her."
It was quiet for a moment.
"You better fix this," Quinn spoke one last time as he headed for the door, he didn't trust himself to not punch Trevor if he stayed any longer.
"She is the best thing that has ever happened to you, don't let her get away." Jamie walked away.
Tumblr media
(you)
The first week after that night everyone gave you your space. Texts were your only form of communication, you didn't trust yourself to talk, you knew your voice would be coarse from all the crying.
Trevor would call and text you everyday and every time he did you ignored him. Eventually you muted his notifications, you knew you should've blocked him but you weren't ready for that.
────
The second week after that night you no longer had space. At least one of your friends were with you at your apartments at all times. These days were filled with binge watching cringy reality shows and lots of take out. You started to smile and laugh again.
────
The third week after is when you finally left your apartment.
On Monday, Quinn took you to the beach, complaining about how he was getting sand in places he didn't know sand could get into. You laughed as he got hit on, multiple times. He just awkwardly said 'thank you,' every time he was complimented. Once the, one sided, flirting stopped Quinn soon became your greatest enemy. When you got up to stretch your legs he took that as an opportunity to grab you and throw you into the water. Once you came out of the water you saw Quinn dying of laughter. When he saw the look on your face he ran for his life.
On Tuesday, Luke dragged you to an arcade. You beat him at air hockey and might have gotten a little too excited based on the looks you got from all of the parents with their little kids. He accused you of cheating saying 'You rigged this somehow. I should've won, I literally play hockey for a living!’ You just laughed and called him a sore loser followed by a laugh and, ‘Maybe it’s time you retire and I take your place. I do look pretty good in red.’ He just scoffed and walked off to the next game.
On Wednesday, Jack made you go to an amusement park. He said that the two of you had to go on every single ride. The day started good but soon Jack's face started to go pale. You said you two should probably leave but he refused. He said he was fine and that it was time for the big rollercoaster. As soon as you got off the ride Jack ran to the nearest trash can and threw up. You whispered a quick 'I told you so,' and Jack just gave you the middle finger.
On Thursday, Nico forced you to go on a hike with him, you hated this. He didn’t tell you how long the hike was going to be and you wanted to punch him. The hike was filled with you cursing at him, while he just laughed. It was worth it once you saw the view at the top. The smug look on Nico's face however, was not worth it. You jokingly said you would push him off the cliff if he didn't wipe that look off his face.
On Friday, Jamie just simply walked around town with you as you shopped, not complaining once, that night he took you to a drive-in movie theater that was playing your favorite movie. This might have been your favorite activity of the week. Just you and one of your closest friends laughing being a little too loud and getting told to shut up by the cars next to you, almost getting kicked out.
You thought you would get to have a quiet night alone on Saturday but that thought went out the window when you heard a knock on your door. You opened the door and saw all of them standing there, a couple holding snacks and a few holding blankets and pillows.
"What is all of this?" You laughed.
"We’re staying over," Jack said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, he then pushed past you letting himself in.
"Yeah, no, of course you can totally come in," you joked sarcastically.
"We know," Nico said, you playfully slapped his back as he walked by.
You watched as the blankets were dropped on the living room floor and the snacks were placed on the coffee table.
"I don't have a say in this, do I?" You crossed your arms
"Nope!" They all said in unison. You rolled your eyes playfully before joining them.

(him)
The last three weeks had been absolute hell for Trevor. During those three weeks he barely saw Jamie or anyone else, he knew he deserved that thought. The silence and alone time gave him a lot of time to think. When he wasn't in bed, he was out driving. He never had a destination in mind, he just wanted to clear his head but, as if the universe was playing some sick joke on him, he always ended up at your apartment building.
That Sunday morning was no exception. He sat there for what felt like eternity before he noticed people exiting the building. He focused to see who it was and he felt his heart start racing once he did. It was Jamie, Quinn, Jack, Luke, and Nico. Quickly he ducked, thankful that the parking spot he was in was somewhat covered by a tree. After a few minutes he finally looked to see if the coast was clear. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding.
This was his moment. He could go up to you and finally explain everything, finally see you again, even if it was for the last time. He took a few deep breaths before opening the car door. Slowly, he walked towards the side entrance of the building. Once he got there he stopped and remembered, he had given your spare key to Jamie, he couldn't get into the building. He looked over at the intercom system and saw the button with your name. He obviously couldn't press it. You would turn him away immediately. He looked at the only other name that he knew.
Miss Bea. The old lady who lived across the hall from you. The lady who you would spend most of your free time with and the lady who always came over to your apartment on Sunday nights for dinner and card games. You both quickly became an important part in each other's lives. You were close, Miss Bea was like your grandmother and you were like her granddaughter. He knew that you had definitely told Miss Bea what had happened and he also knew that Miss Bea was terrifying when she was mad. With a shaky hand he pressed the button next to Miss Bea's name. He waited for a second before he heard her voice.
"Who is this? What do you want?" She asked quickly. Trevor froze and couldn't speak. "If this is some kind of prank or whatever you kids do these days you better get to running before I get down there." He knew that wasn't an empty threat.
"Hi-," his voice wavered for a second. "Hi, Miss Bea. It's-um-it's Trevor." He braced himself.
"You have some nerve coming here!" She was almost yelling.
"I know, ma'am, I know." He stopped and ran his hand through his hair, he didn’t know what to say, so he didn’t say anything. It was silent for awhile. Trevor began to think she had walked away.
"Are you here to apologize?" She said curtly.
"Yes, ma'am," he whispered.
"Speak up I can't hear you. I said, are you here to apologize?"
"Yes, ma'am," he said once again, this time loud and clear. It went quiet again. He thought that maybe she had just walked away as he just stood there for awhile. Soon the door in front of him opened and there stood the short but mighty, and scary, little old lady.
"You make her cry angain and I will end you." She pointed at him. "I know people. One call and they'll be here in a second."
Trevor gulped and quickly nodded his head in fear. He had no doubt that she did in fact 'know people,' and he did not want to meet them. She let him walk in front of her and he waited to help her up the stairs with an arm held out.
"Don't get all gentlemen like now." She waved her hand shooing him away. He nodded his head before turning and making his way to your apartment.
Before he knew it he was standing at the door. With a shaky hand he knocked before he lost the courage. Time felt like it had slowed down. Soon the door swung open.
"Guys, I told you-"

(you)
Your stomach dropped instantly. There he was standing right in front of you. Quickly you tried to slam the door but he stopped it with his foot.
"Wait!" You opened the door once again.
"How the hell did you get in here?" You wanted to yell but you didn't. Before he could respond you saw Miss Bea walking to her front door with a little smirk on her face. "Miss Bea?!" You said in disbelief.
"Are we still on for dinner tonight, dear?" She asked in the most nonchalant voice you had ever heard. Your jaw dropped. "Honey, we talked about this, close your mouth or you're going to catch flies." She joked as she closed her door, leaving you alone with Trevor. You quickly closed your mouth before looking at the boy who had caused you so much pain.
"Can we please talk?" He whispered.
"I don't want to talk to you." You started to shut the door again.
"Then can you please listen? Just listen to what I have to say and if by the time I'm done you still want me to leave I will leave and I will never bother you again." You let out a sigh and opened the door, slowly.
"You have 5 minutes," you knew that was far too generous but, sadly, you desperately wanted to hear what he had to say. You stepped aside and let him in. You watched as he looked around your apartment like he had never been there before. All of the pictures of the two of you and the small little trinkets the two of you had collected over the years were tucked away in the back of your closet. There was no trace of him anymore. "You're wasting time. You’re 5 minutes started when I closed the door." You said as you crossed your arms. Finally, he turned to you, and for the first time you got a proper look at him. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair was a mess, and his face wasn't as bright as it used to be.
"Do you remember that field trip we took back in second grade, to the aquarium?" He asked. You nodded your head, extremely confused as to why that is what he started with. He looked down at his hands. "You were terrified to walk through the shark tunnel, so I held your hand and promised that I would protect you." He chuckled but his voice was still shaking.
It took everything in you not to smile at the fond memory.
"That was the first time I felt it. Obviously I didn't know what ‘it’ was at the time. But when my mom picked me up from school that day I told her she had to take me to the hospital immediately. She asked what was wrong and tried to see if i had any injuries. I told her you gave me cooties. She just laughed and I remember I got so upset because I thought I was dying and my mom was just laughing at me. She finally asked me why I thought you had given me cooties. I told her that my tummy felt all warm and fuzzy after I let go your hand and it happened again every time you laughed or smile or looked at me. She laughed again and told me it wasn't cooties and that I would understand when I was older." He wiped his nose on his sleeve, you turned around and grabbed a tissue box.
"Here," you whispered softly as you offered it to him.
"Thank you.” He wiped his nose before continuing. "Then in seventh grade there was that cheesy little winter formal and that little dickhead Tyler asked you to dance. Except it wasn’t even a real slow dance you both just stood there awkwardly with your hands on each other’s shoulders, stepping side to side.” You let out a quick and short laugh. Trevor laughed too. "I was so mad that he asked you before I did and that's when I started to realize that maybe I wanted more than just a friendship with you. You two started dating and at first I thought it wasn't gonna last because, c'mon we were in middle school, middle school relationships never last. But somehow you did and you lasted all the up to the end of sophomore year, which surprised everyone, especially me. You two finally broke up because you caught him cheating-"
"Okay, okay, you don't need to bring that part up," you muttered.
"And then somehow Tyler ended up with a broken nose..." he trailed off.
"And you somehow ended up with bruised knuckles,” you chuckled. A lightness began to fill the air.
"Hey, don't look at me, Tyler never said who did it." He raised his hands up in surrender. You could see Trevor's face start to light up again. “The end of senior year came and prom was coming up. You went on and on about how there was no chance in hell you were going. You turned down a dozen promposals. I was able to convince you to go with me because I promised I would stay by your side the entire time. I still had to drag you out of the house though. That's the night we had our first kiss, it was during a slow dance, a real slow dance, and we laughed because it was a complete cliché. We never talked about that kiss afterwards, we both acted like it never happened, and I hated that. It terrified me but that's when I knew 100%," he paused as he took a small step forward, and you let him. "That's the night I realized I was completely in love with you. I have been in love with you since before I even knew what love was. I still am and I will always be in love with you."
You didn't know when they started but you finally felt tears stream down your face. You stood there in shock. He felt the same way you did. He was in love with you. He has been his entire life.
"I never acted on those feelings because I thought you didn’t feel the same and that you never would. I’m a complete mess and all over the place and you’re…” he paused. “You’re, you. Then my birthday happened and everything got so complicated. I should have told you that very first night but I couldn’t, I couldn’t ruin our friendship more than it probably already was. I need you in my life so I took you in whatever way that would keep you by my side. Which was fucked up and completely selfish," he whispered.
"But what about that night? You didn't seem to be in love with me then," your voice broke a little at the end.
"I thought you were mad at me. You were short on the phone with me and then your phone went straight to voicemail every time I tried to call and you didn't read any of my texts.”
“So your first thought was to hook up with some random girl?” You cut him off.
“No! I don’t know!” He stuttered loudly, regretting his choice of words when he saw your eyes filled with hurt. “Fuck! No! You make my mind get all jumbled up and I can’t think straight when I’m around you or even when I just think about you. I jumped to conclusions and I thought that everything was over, our friendship and our…whatever we became, and just the thought of that sent me into a self destructive spiral, I wanted to get you out of my head and I failed and I hurt you while doing so. I should’ve told you how I felt that night at prom. I should’ve tried harder, I know that now, and I should've fought for you. I should've ran after you that night.”
“Yeah, you really should have,” you whispered. Slowly but surely you could feel your heart getting put back together again with every word he said. You could feel your love grow the more he talked.
“I have been beating myself up everyday for the past three weeks because all I did was stand there and let you walk away. You are quite literally the best thing that has ever happened to me. I would give everything up if it meant you'd forgive me and that I could spend the rest of our lives making it up to you. I'd even give up hockey if you asked me to, I really hope you don't because I'm really not good at anything else." He was rambling, saying whatever thought came into his head. He went to continue speaking but you just laughed and closed the space between the both of you.
You grabbed his shirt and kissed him. You kissed him with everything you had. He stood there shocked for a second before he finally relaxed into the kiss, cupping your face with both of his hands. This kiss was unlike any of the kisses before. There was no rush, no roughness, there was just love. You could feel the love radiating off of both of you and you never wanted it to end. Sadly it had to. You had to breathe.
"What was that for? I mean not that I didn't enjoy it, I really enjoyed it. I just mean does-" you interrupted him with another kiss.
"Has anyone ever told you that you talk too much?" You asked as you pulled away. You wiped the few tears still left on his face and he did the same for you. You wrapped your arms around his neck, his wrapped around your waist.
"I've been told that once or twice," he joked, all you did was laugh before bringing him in for a soft peck. He leaned his forehead against yours, his eyes closed and face full of love and happiness. The two of you just stood there in silence for a moment, taking in and processing everything that just happened.
"Hey Trev," you waited for some kind of response. Which came in the form of a questioning hum. "You got the story wrong." You pulled away, and walked over to your couch, Trevor right behind you. You both sat down
"What do you mean?" He questioned.
"The aquarium," you looked at him with a smirk. "You were the one who was terrified to walk through the shark tunnel, not me." He looked at you like you were crazy.
"No I wasn't, it was you!" He argued. He leaned back against the couch and pulled you with him.
“Maybe you’ve fallen on the ice one too many times because I’m right,” you laughed, your laughter causing Trevor to laugh. You curled into his side and he wrapped his arms around you.
Once your laughter died down Trevor spoke up again.
“I’m so happy you forgave me because I did not want to fall victim to Miss Bea’s ‘people,’ that really would’ve sucked.” He shuddered at the thought.
You looked up at him and the scared look on his face caused you to smile bigger than you ever had before. He looked down at you and playfully scoffed at your smiling face before leaning down to softly kiss you again.
This is what you both wanted for the rest of your lives. Laughing until your ribs hurt, kissing like it was the last time, and all the good times and bad times in between.
It wasn’t going to be easy, and you still had a lot to talk about, but you knew, with every fiber of your being, that he was never going to let you go again, he was never going to let you walk out that door, and you were never going to let him do the same.
