Chrome extensions I actually use as a mentally ill university student
Making websites easier to digest:
Dark Reader - Changes any webpage to dark mode.
Mercury Reader - Simplifies the layout of any webpage to eliminate distractions and irritating formatting.
Podcastle AI - Turns any article into a podcast. This is a lifesaver for being able to process what I’m reading, to be honest.
Spelling/grammar:
LanguageTool - Spelling and grammar check for those of us who regularly type in more than one language.
Grammarly - Spelling and grammar check for those of us who only type in English. Can be used with LanguageTool installed, which is what I do.
Google Dictionary - Define any word on the webpage with a double-click.
Google Translate - Translate an entire webpage or even just a short segment.
Misc:
AdGuard Adblocker - After trying quite a few adblocker options, this is the one I find the best.
The Great Suspender - Automatically suspend inactive tabs to help with performance. <- as an edit, I don’t believe this is available anymore
Honey - Try coupon codes automatically to save money on online purchases.
Built-in Chrome tab grouping - Group your tabs to keep organized and minimize distracting clutter.

Here is a list of some YouTube ASMR ambiences/soundscapes (they’re all hyperlinked, so click away!) Unlike traditional ASMR, these videos do not feature any people. Talented YouTubers have used software to create rendered environments with layered sounds, with many of these ambiences inspired from fantasy to others based in reality. I find music with lyrics to be distracting sometimes, but these are great background noises for focusing, studying, doing homework, and even for relaxing. Enjoy and good luck ♡

So you want to learn modern Greek: Greek language learning master post
If you’re trying to learn Greek and find materials for learning online you’ve probably run into some frustration because it seems like most of the information is geared toward learners of Koine Greek to read the Bible. That’s all well and good, but for those of us who are looking to learn modern Greek it’s not terribly helpful.
With that in mind I’ve compiled a list of the materials that I found in my quest to self-study Greek that began in earnest about 1.5 years ago. Now keep in mind I had an excellent teacher (my girlfriend) who also served as my motivation, but even if you don’t have a close relationship with a Greek speaker you will at some point need to interact with proficient speakers to help move you to the next level of fluency. However, the materials I outlined here should be enough to give you a very good start.
Learning Greek podcasts from the Hellenic American Union: The go-to audio-visual resource.  80 lessons (all FREE) with accompanying PDF transcripts.  Be warned it’s ALL Greek, not a lick of English (or anything else) in it, so you’ll need a dictionary/textbook to go with it.
Teach Yourself Greek: The Greek edition of the venerable textbook series.  Definitely worth a look.
Memrise: There are a surprising number of really good Modern Greek-English flashcard sets on Memrise (which uses a spaced repetition algorithm that I found very effective).
Wordreference: King of the online dictionaries, at least in terms of variety
Neurolingo Lexiscope: See a word in Greek but can’t work out its uninflected form?  This is the tool for you (only 10 free searches a day, though, last I checked)
Modern Greek Verbs: Everything you ever wanted to know about Modern Greek verbs.  Seriously, everything.
Greek Grammar: Excellent overviews of the main grammatical points of the Greek parts of speech
Harry Foundalis’ Greek Language: Harry’s a bit of a renaissance man, which is awesome.  His way of explaining verbal aspect in Modern Greek I found less awesome until I warmed to it, but that’s just me: I like the technical, linguistics jargon filled explanations coupled with charts of patterns and examples. Once I got past the presentation I could see what he was doing and it has a certain brilliance.  The rest of his grammar (and phonetics) stuff is top notch.
Cooljugator: Conjugates most common Greek verbs.
These resources, watching lots of Greek TV (thank you, YouTube) and listening to lots of Greek music (thank you YouTube again), and practicing constantly (thank you to my girlfriend) took me from zero to fairly fluent in about 1.5 years.  Now, I already spoke a lot of languages and I had help, so your results may vary, but this should be a good start on your Greek learning journey.
Καλή επιτυχία!

How to Create a Self-Study Schedule
Tumblr media
If you’re studying any foreign language on your own (or without a course) you’re going to need to be extra organized. Your language study is in your own hands and so is how much you learn. There is no one holding you accountable or motivated either. So it’s entirely up to you to make sure you’re organized and planning enough material that your learning at a comfortable pace. There are roughly two ways to learn languages on your own. There are roughly two ways to go about planning your language study: intensively or casually. Here are my tips for intensive studying and I’ll post about casual studying soon:

Hello.. I just started learning Italian. And I sometimes don’t know where to start. Do I start with more grammar or vocabularies? Which should I focus more on? Any tips? Especially for beginner Italian learners. Thank you xx
Ciao! Here’s a list of posts that might help you!
I don’t know where to start
300 basic words
Resources to learn Italian if your first language is not English
Italian resources masterpost
Italian movies/TV series: x - x - x
Italian books
Italian TV programs for kids (easier to understand)
I hope this is enough for the moment. To answer your question, you should focus on both grammar and words: start with the simple present of the main verbs and then learn basic vocabulary (greetings, family, food…). Then, with time, you can enlarge your objectives, learning more verb forms and tenses and more complex vocabulary. Proceed step by step, read and listen. If you ever needed anything, you can ask me, @sciogli-lingua, @langsandlit or @sayitaliano (they have a long list of resources on their blog)! Buona fortuna!

Heya! I've decided to come up with one of these since challenges really help me get on my track again and I've been procrastinating too much
How it works
Choose a target language (if you want to do it with more than one then by all means go ahead)
Look up five (5) new words each day
Make flashcards about the words (this will work as your study material)
Write a sentence with each word (this is optional)
If you want you can post your word list on Tumblr using the tag #fivewordsaday
That's it! Nice and easy!
When do we begin?
October 15th
I have no idea what words to look for!
You can try different topics each day:
School
The beach
Animals
Nature
Seasons
Body parts
Colours
Clothes
Adjectives
Verbs
Halloween themed
I'll be posting my word list for you guys and if you'd like a link to my Quizlet flashcards just tell me and I'll post that too.
Good luck to anyone trying this out!
