Project 524- The Power of Inspiration
Hey everyone in Tumblr world! As a faciliator for Project 524 it has been riveting to see Detroit through the eyes of my students at Western. It has been interesting to experience what seemed to be a distain for Detroit slowly morph into pride and love for a city that is indeed lovable. This "morphing" process has been wonderfully for me not solely as a resident of the Metro Detroit area, but as an artist. I am working on my next recording "SugarWater" and dedicating it to Detroit. The writing exercises, in particular last week's poetry lesson on metaphor and voice, sparked me to do a song from the voice of Detroit as a proud hard working woman who is a freedom fighter. Here goes vs. 1: Nobody's debutant/here to start a renassance/catch me in the Rennasance doing a few sommersaults/flippin out/ line up -pick us/sore thumb/stickin' out/pillow and the couch/ but you still can't kick us out/ we in here-scratch that we been here/not anemic/got iron mixed with cement/concrete flow immovable believe it/legendary is the pedigree- we're a breed of phoenix/levitate through the ashes/ it us against the masses/who else that you know can make aggression fashion/feel our passion/ain't nothin' bout us passive/ matchless/we put a patent on classic/ we're underground railroad passage/progessive/we busy making demands we don’t do suggestions/ -questions?" How sweet is it that I as a faciliator went in to empower Detroit students to create art that counters the narrative that media had about Detroit, and their art empowered me to do the same, while deepening my appreciation for the city I am proud to call "home" ? Gotta love the power of inspiration. Thanks Project 524.
