pretty sickening seeing the far-right jump on a tragic, isolated incident to push their divisive, bullshit agenda

I'm actually pissed, why should a comparatively small proportion of the population control and profit off so much of a country's land and then throw a hissy fit when they're asked to perhaps consider the environment

So the Home Office have withdrawn their plans to house asylum seekers at SPH in Llanelli
And I'm angry. I'm angry because they've made such a fucking mess of the whole situation for as long as it's been going on. Firstly, a lot of people in the local area lost their jobs very suddenly, and in a town like Llanelli, it's not exactly easy to find alternative employment.
And then, of course, the situation drew in far-right agitators looking to exploit it to spread their own hateful message from across the UK, and obviously they're going to view this as a win and I have grave concerns about it emboldening them in an area that has a long history of class struggle that these fuckwits don't care about.
They've just made a mess in a town that is struggling and for what? They're not going to do anything to put it right. Was it worth it? Was it worth the job losses & the divided community they've left behind?

While I find the headline and framing of this story a little distasteful, I do think it summarises the ongoing issues in Llanelli quite well. I especially appreciate the following paragraph near the end:
So much has been taken from this region over the decades – the anthracite coal, the tin and steel – but at least then local people got paid something for their troubles. This time, too, everyone wants to get their cut from Llanelli: the hotel owners, the outsourcing firm, the Home Office. Then there are the touring nationalists, popping over the border to pretend they care about Wales, while in Silicon Valley the social media firms whip up any tensions with their algorithims.

I am deeply, deeply concerned about the far-right rhetoric that's being allowed to spread in Llanelli at the moment, and the obvious fascist groups using the situation to try and make inroads in the community and spread their seeds of hatred. It's actually quite sickening seeing their messages being allowed to take hold.
Massive respect to Stand Up To Racism for doing their best to counter them

people calling a publisher changing some words in some fictional stories "rewriting history" is actually quite funny. Like there actually was a boy with a giant peach with friendly bugs living in it that are now being erased from history.

I think we need to talk about racism in the welsh independence movement.
my friend is an indy wales activist. she loves her country. she is extremely outspoken about welsh independence and does so articulately. then she got married to a man who is Hispanic and her last name changed from a recognisable welsh name to a Hispanic name. she has been told she has no right to an opinion on welsh independence and she has suddenly been "othered" because her last name has changed.
with welsh independence gaining more traction, more and more racists have been finding refuge. they see wales as a white country oppressed by the evil institution. they are using it to further their own ideals of white supremacy under the cloak of legitimacy that is welsh independence.
yescymru, in their manifesto, states that we want to take more refugees. we don't want a white ethnostate. but this has been conveniently ignored by racists who want to take this movement about our independence and sovereignty of our own land and turn it into a white supremacist utopia.
we must make the indy wales movement unsafe for racists. not only do they harm our cause, but they make it actively unsafe for poc to be here. I love multicultarism! I love going to bangor and seeing people from other countries, my best friend is a Korean immigrant, I love hearing about her culture, I love eating at ethnic restaurants, i love seeing different religions and ideas and cultures and traditional dress. indy wales isn't about returning to medieval ideas, it's about a new wales with new opportunities for all while not under the oppression of the english.
we must challenge and expel racists and racist ideas from this movement. if this movement becomes a racist one, I don't want to be a part of it. I don't want welsh independence off the back of racism. I would rather another 200 years of fighting than welsh independence that was built off racism.
this movement must not become a safe place for nazis.

There's something deeply disturbing about Tory MPs using their parents' and grandparents' immigration and refugee stories as a heartwarming backdrop for why they think Britain is great, whilst simultaneously creating extremely hostile policies against immigration and refugees

Nicola Sturgeon, whose government is currently putting through a bill to streamline how people change their sex on their birth certificate, warned that “every time we oversimplify this debate, trans people actually suffer”.
Referring to the latest revelations of misogyny in Westminster, along with the assault on abortion rights in the US, Sturgeon said:
These are the threats against women. I do not believe that trans rights and women’s rights are or should in any way be in conflict and I will argue that case until my dying breath.
Refusing to define the characteristics of a woman – a question that has been used by some media in an attempt to trip up or embarrass politicians across the political spectrum – Sturgeon said: “I’m not going to, I’m just not going to get into this debate at a level that’s about simplified and lurid headlines.”
More of this, please

If you live in the UK please please sign this petition and reblog this post. If you dont live in the UK please reblog this and spread it as far as possible.
TLDR; they're trying to ban conversion therapy in the UK and are refusing to ban it for trans people too. We need your help.
