@melpomaen | Everyone else excuse the break from our regularly scheduled programming for some Tolkien nerdiness.
I Wanna Be In The Calvary Noldor edition (as sung prior to the Burning of the Ships)
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before I wanna good mount when the trumpet sounds and I hear the dragon's roar I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna horse in the volunteer force that's riding forth at dawn Please save for me some gallantry that will echo when I'm gone I beg of you sir let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long
I'd not a good foot soldier make, I'd be sour and slow at march And I'd be sick on a swan ship, and the Belegaer'd leave me parched But I'll be first in line if they'll let me ride, by god, you'll see my starch Lope back o'er the heath with the laurel wreath underneath that vict'ry arch
Let me earn my fleurs in the battle's blur where the day is lost or won I'll wield my lance as the ponies dance and the blackguards hit their drums A sabre keen, and a bow notched and an army at my back Where the minstrels lead with the cold, cold steel let me be a cav'lryman
Let 'em play their flutes and lace-up my boots and place them back to front For I won't be back on the Helcaraxë until I'm finished in my hunt I wanna be in the cavalry if I must go off to war I wanna be in the cavalry, but I won't ride home no more
-
I Wanna Be In The Cavalry: Reprise (Written sometimes in the late first age)
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
Courageous at first we took their worst, our positions we held stout We clung to belief and we hung on the speech from our trusted leaders' mouths Overwhelming odds and a hopeless cause and our cities overrun There were them that said we was badly led and that were we outmanned
I lost count of the worthy mounts that from under me were cut My favourite mare with her head in the air took poisoned arrows in her gut In the first two weeks on the Ard-Galen my brother lost his arm Was only sixty years till all we prayed was get us home unharmed
O for the day that we changed our names and the well that we were wished The men's congrats and the pats on the backs and the ladies that we missed The band that played and the grande parade and the patriotic shouts All faded fast, didn't even last till the uniforms wore out
And there were none to replace nor to help us face the winters cold and bleak That chilled to the bone the pneumonia prone and froze our bootless feet Then the red-clad came with oath-bound fits, blood and stolen gem That proved in the end to have killed more men than the vilest enemy
We were finally forced to feed on horse and carcass we could scrounge When the wagons stopped and we'd burnt their crops to charred and barren ground With morale in doubt and our pride run out no honour did I see All I seen were a thousand dreams piled dead in front of me
I wanna be in the cavalry if the send me off to war I wanna be in the cavalry but I won't ride home no more

Every time someone in the Silm fandom has told me this week that AO3 is getting rid of the Quenya names, I have had to stop myself from replying “well yeah, didn’t you hear about that decree from King Thingol in Doriath?”

we should talk more about cities that are vampires. cities that are cold and wet and sink into your bones and stay there. cities that are hungry and want to live. dead cities that dont know they're dead and suck the life force of their people to maintain the delusion. cities with harbors that are actually mouths; one-way entries. cities that are devastatingly lonely and see consumption as love

Keep seeing that post where OP starts like 'Thinking about...grieving the undead' and then adds on about like. Real life situations where people have not died but have left your life and you would have reason to grieve them.
All respect, that's an important concept, but that is not what I am thinking about when I read 'grieving the undead'.

//Just finished watching the live action Avatar adaption, and I know that reactions seem to be… shall we say, mixed? But I’ll be honest when I say I really enjoyed it.
I absolutely love what they did with Yue! She’s a waterbender!
A lot of people are upset that they removed Sokka’s sexism, but I admit I like the post I saw about how Kanna literally left the NWT, so her teaching against that makes a lot of sense.
I really like how they changed up the Omashu arc— Jet being there works delightfully well, and I appreciate you still get the moral complexities that emerge. Sokka having the moment of “yeah, I helped design the thing” is a great callback.
I am a HUGE fan of the narrative effects of seeing Ozai and Azula coming in early! It’s not just the invisible hand war, but highlights that there are people behind it on every level. Also Ozai is terrible, and him putting both kids against one another fits. It’s clear he doesn’t really care for either.
A lot of people are upset it’s not a perfect adaptation, and I’m sort of glad it’s not? They make changes, I like a decent number of these changes. If I just wanted to see the cartoon I would… watch the cartoon. It doesn’t get rid of the cartoon.

So a while back, @a-slight-sweet-fiction and I came up with a Carlos-Charles roleswap AU!
In which it's Charles the Theologist, along with his infant son Donovan, who comes to Night Vale in 2012 to study Huntokar (and the angels, the Glow Cloud, etc.) and ends up falling for Her Voice, and several years later it's Carlos the Scientist who ends up in Desert Bluffs Too on his quest to study the scientifically-fascinating Other Empty Desert!
Charles and Cecil are somehow the least unhinged pairing between these four; they mellow each other out a lot, and probably have lots of deep existensial conversations about the universe while snuggling and staring at the stars (and the clouds, when those get legalized).
Inversely, Kevin and Carlos enable support each other to the most extreme degree and are probably a few sideway steps away from world domination. (I just really wanted to draw a Carlos who's a little more Mad Scientist; he wears Kevin's blood in a vial around his neck because he's a romantic like that.)
It was Alex's idea to call this the Scientifically Assured Destruction AU, partly to highlight the more harmful ways Kevin and Carlos enable each other, and partly because it abbreviates to SAD and that would piss Kevin off so much :D

“There was a Night Vale in a world that had flooded, and this town floated on the water and thrived, its light spreading iridescent over the waves like an oil slick.”

May I offer a third?
3. This is the only universe in which we don’t love each other. Maybe through chance of circumstance or deliberate action; we are unique because this is the only version in which it is impossible.
two very good fictional relationship dynamics:
1. i would find you and love you in every universe. our love is inevitable and transcends reality as we understand it
2. this is the only universe where the dominos fell exactly right so that we could fall in love. we have something unique and we have overcome so much to get here

Big fan of sun motifs in characters not necessarily being about positivity and happiness and how they're so " bright and warm" but instead being about fucking brutal they are.
Radiant. A FORCE of nature that will turn you to ash. That warmth that burns so hot it feels like ice. Piercing yellow and red and white. A character being a Sun because you cannot challenge a Sun without burning alive or taking everything down with them if victorious.

//So the episode for episode 75 (The Narrow Place) is Black Eyes by David Wirsig, which…
It’s on my Kevin playlist because it works for him except for one teeny tiny flaw: in 11th grade when the Pandemic first started, I listened to it on repeat, I loved it, I was vibing with it. At the same time I was studying Tintin for my French classes. Can you guess where it’s going? If your answer is “I accidentally pavloved myself to associate this song and Tintin” then you would be right!

Okay so I have it wholly escaped tears, but there’s only like one or two! Barely more than watering eyes, I am still wholly coherent. Shoutout to the The Heroine for continuing to be a weather that is phenomenal! It’s one of my favourites.
Cecil’s final monologue is also incredible. It’s surprisingly funny when I’m not just carried along by my tears. But also ahhh! Yeah, neeeever gonna be totally normal about this episode. But I’m done it now!
No more episodes to look upon with trepidation, just glee! Guidelines for Dispoaal is the next one I am legitimately hyped for— that and memories of Europe may honestly be two of my three favourite episodes.
//In my wtnv relisten I have finally arrived back at Triptych. Y’all… the first time I heard it I ugly sobbed.
It is my Roman Empire, wish me luck! I think I’ll need it.
