Departure
Sunny was the afternoon when I first heard
The words coming from my mama’s lips: ‘it’s time’
I held in my cry at the airport since it’d be followed by a scold
The thought of this being a blessing never really occurred
To me, our home was already sublime
Or so I thought, having no idea how life would unfold
I looked outside as we flew alongside a bird
The window seat brought me to tear over a melancholic chime
I remember thinking ‘I guess this is part of growing old’
Now I look back and understand why fleeing was preferred
Welcome to the city where pies are made of key lime
The place where I would find my treasure gold
So, although it still embodies a pain in my chest
Mama was right, this was for the best.

Darling
It has always been you
You had me at the first hello
An emotion that was so new
This is love for all we know
Despite all that we’ve been through
I could not stand to let you go
I am captivated by your words
Watching you grow has been heaven in motion
You are a sunlit sky with no clouds or birds
Yet when angered, a turbulent ocean
God, my family and you- my heart is split in thirds
Worthy of all my devotion

What fools we are to think
The two cheesy words could stick: ‘forever together’
If nothing in our planet is permanent
Why did we think a fleeting emotion could keep us forever together?
What do you do when you run out of things to talk about?
I’m sure you must run out of topics after spending forever together
I don’t even think whoever came up with the word forever
Had someone with who they wanted to spend forever together
For you see, it’s a mind trick and a vast
Exaggeration of fondness to promise anyone you’ll stay, forever together
Yet the word ‘forever’ would be jealous if it knew
Forever together, is reserved only for me and you.

Dear Miami,
People come to you from all parts of the world to get a taste of your unique culture.North Americans travel down to the South just for your warmth; to experience you is a vacation. The sunshine state welcomes them with its zesty orange blossoms and traditional key limes, into its very own tropical paradise called Miami. You are known to hold the Hispanic community tightly around your arms as it continues to shape you into the multicultural delight you are known to be.
The city where 3:00 pm signifies cafecito time and colorful roosters can be spotted abundantly all around, proudly representing its Hispanic heritage. This metropolis represents a mystic location where an explosive fusion of diverse cultures takes place. The city where Calle Ocho, Art Deco District, Miccosukee Resort, Bayside, Wynwood Walls and Jungle Island collide. Its unique sights of wildlife and nature, found profusely in the green Everglades and renowned Vizcaya Gardens, are simply breathtaking. And even though the months of July and August feel like we’re living right next door to hell, we wait all year long to have a taste of your unforgettable summers. These are acclaimed, by both citizens and tourists, for its sunlit morning trips to Miami Beach and tranquil evening strolls around Ocean Drive.
The city where even the American-born residents, also known as ‘los gringos’, can’t help but to love the toasty cheese and guava pastelitos, savory dulce de leche and crunchy plantain chips frequently vended. The city where guayaberas and cigars are sold and valued as relics of the exiled Cuban community who resides in it. You somehow manage to retain the roots of mine, and other’s Hispanic heritages, alive. Nine years ago, my parents and I came to you from the demolished remains of Cuba, only to realize that the culture that is now sadly long lost in our native island is embedded within you. The house we moved into at the time was a block away from a restaurant named ‘Versailles’, known for its iconic Cuban dishes and human rights protests. Additionally, across from it was another restaurant, which had an enormous rooster statue at the entrance, called ‘La Carreta’. I have lived in the same house since then and have proudly witnessed first-handedly freedom of speech at its finest while residing here. You have, over time, become my beloved home away from home.
To Miami with Love,

The reason for his departure wasn’t clear
But the aftermath feeling was the same
Mind full of unanswered questions and fear
Only restless nights before the sun came
The ‘why me?’ question drove me to despair
A constant battle between hearts and brains
The lack of reason made it feel unfair
Sometimes, their absence is all that remains
The stinging of this hurt tends to linger
When there is no given consolation
It can quickly turn sweetness to anger
Which blinds you to loving appreciation
Despite these feelings one cannot avoid
Remember, you alone will heal this void.
