In 2003, I was living in #hongkong. On 7/1 I joined 500,000 others during a 6 1/2 hour march against an anti-subversion bill as well as the leadership of Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. I bought these two t-shirts to wear! Although I’m American and grew up in a democratic country, participating in this protest march was and still is the most democratic experience I’ve ever had. I felt people power for real. It also crystalized for me how complacent and unappreciative Americans are about our voting rights. In Hong Kong there are students and retirees in the streets in oppressive heat fighting for representation and suffrage to be in control of their own destiny. In the US about 45% of the people can’t get off their arse to even vote for their leader. If everyone voted in America, Trump and the GOP wld be where they belong—nowhere near the drivers seat of American leadership. Hong Kongers are risking their lives for that right. Come on America, wake the f*ck up!The only way GOP can continue to be in power and erode our democracy and founding fathers vision is for you to not let your voice and vote be heard. Like I did in 2003, I stand with the people of Hong Kong . This series of mixed media drawings I created while living in Los Angeles in 2005, right before I moved to DC, has always been one of my personal favorites. Ironically, I still haven’t shown them… probably because I did them on copy paper without thinking about a show or selling them. I appreciate them more with the perspective of nearly 15 years. First off, this was before smartphones. I actually did these as sketches scribbled on my #PalmPilot to stay busy during 12 hour days on sound stages hustling to make it as an actor. Not fun. That year from July to Oct, in between acting, auditioning and actually paying the bills as a magazine editor and freelance writer, I was going to see #Basquiat at the Museum of Contemporary Art @moca. The four-month major retrospective of Jean-Michel’s life work featured over 100 works. It was the first time I got to spend a lot of time up close absorbing his work. 🤯 I was still just over a year removed from living in Hong Kong and seven total in Asia, and I was finding my footing back into American culture and politics. Hindsight: Having no job or plan except “to act in LA” was probably not the wisest transnational relocation strategy. 🤔But, hey, I survived and I created cool art because of it ✌️I probably would have been on Instagram the whole time on set if it were today. So, there’s that...
