Fanfic tiktok is wild... I see so many people saying shit like "I could never read anything below 60k!!", or "What story can you even tell in under 5k words?" or "A oneshot below 10k isn't even a story!" or "I always filter completed fics by 100k< only!"

And I'm like...

A) which fandoms are you reading fics for where you have this kind of offerings on the regular?

B) have you heard of short stories? If you truly think every story NEEDS to be longform to connect with people, I sincerely feel sorry for you.

C) Average novel length is between 50k to 100k. I'm sorry, but CONSISTENTLY demanding fic writers to push out fics of that length is insane. Just think about it: YOU DEMAND AUTHORS TO PUT OUT FICS THAT COMPARE TO COMMERCIAL NOVELS IN LENGTH (AND QUALITY) AS A BASELINE.

Yall are wilding.

"You should know, I figured it out. It’s very obvious with you two."

"Wait, it is?" Draco said, feeling the panic rising. "Obvious how? I mean – fuck – this isn’t good, Pansy. It’s dangerous if –"

"Shhhh," said Pansy, silencing Draco as she placed a finger over his lips. It’s not that obvious. But I’m very observant about these things. I’ve been right every time I’ve had a suspicion about who’s sneaking around."

Draco relaxed slightly, still a bit flustered. "And —" he swallowed, choosing his words carefully. "It doesn’t bother you that I’m with –" he raised his brow.

Pansy gave a long-suffering sigh. "I mean, at first, I was in denial. Then angry. But then the more I thought about it, the more it all made sense."

"Oh," was all Draco could say.

"And I don’t think you’re going to find what you’re looking for here," she said as they both looked around the dingy shop. "Come on," continued Pansy as she grabbed his hand. "I know exactly what to get."

Draco nearly stumbled as the witch dragged him along once again. "Pansy, I mean, this is a bit on the nose, don’t you think?" he called out as they neared the bookshop.

"Maybe so, but just trust me."

Obviously, Hermione would love a book. But he had wanted to get her something more thoughtful. Something that was unexpected and –

"Wait," said Draco in confusion when they took an unexpected turn and ended up inside Spintwitches Quidditch Supplies.

"Are you having me on?" he asked. "Or are you trying to sabotage me?" He began to wonder if Pansy was lying about being alright with him dating Hermione. "Broom polish?" he questioned as she placed a container in his hands.

"Sometimes it’s not about the perfect gift, Draco –"

"Clearly," he snorted, but then Pansy only glared.

"It’s about the little things. Giving gifts that say I think about your daily needs. Grand gestures are overrated," she said, as she continued to put random things into his arms. "I mean, the way you two look at each other," she sighed dreamily. "It was only a matter of time before all that animosity between you would burn so hot you’d end up snogging each other after a match."

"I guess that makes sense," said Draco. But then she handed him a jockstrap. "Wait, Pansy," he called out in a harsh whisper. "Who exactly do you think I’m dating?" Pansy turned around and mouthed something he couldn’t decipher. "Who?"

She moved a few steps closer and whispered in his ear. "You and Potter. You’re madly in love with the Chosen One."

"I am most certainly NOT," he sputtered, dropping all the items. The shop owner looked up from the counter. "Clumsy me," Draco called out, face red as he frantically began to pick the items back up.

"It’s alright, Draco. I think it’s a rather lovely story. Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter – rivals to lovers."
