Studying for slow learners
I’ve always struggled with learning and studying because I need more time than others do. Today I want to share methods and tips that helped me learn things more effectively.
First of all I want to mention that learning/studying is not really affected by your inteligence. If you struggle memorising things and understanding certain concepts, it’s okay and it does not make you stupid or any less worthy of success in life!
Make sure you give yourself the time you need -Don’t waste time pretending that you can do it in few hours and don’t wait until last minute just because others are. Sure, it can seem unfair that you have to start sooner than others but it is what it is and you should work with what you have. Figure out how much time you really need to memorise certain volume of information and give yourself that time.
Try things out if you can -If you can live through stuff, DO IT! Try different physics experiments, go and see the plants you’re learning about, engage your body while learning about it in biology. Of course stay always safe though!
Engage as many senses as you can -Even if you can’t try out things you’re learning about, try to engage as many senses as you can. Listen to people talking about it, look up things and see what they look like.
Make sure you understand things -Learning abstract concepts is far more difficult than learning things you understand. This doesn’t apply to maths only. Look up people you learn about in history. Find the artists paintings, writings and music. Really know what you’re learning about!
Write things down -Writing is one of the most effective method of memorising things for me. You can also word information in a way that fits you.
Use mnemonic aids -Make your own and make them as silly as possible
Learn the essential first -When it comes to large quantities of information, it’s very probable you won’t be able to learn it all and that’s okay. Start with the essential and important information and then you can focus on the rest. Knowing the basics will also help you connect details to something you already know well.
Ask someone to quiz you -Getting things wrong and then being corrected is also one of the best ways to learn for me personally. If you don’t have anyone to quiz you, just test yourself! Write down questions to answer and then do so!
Teach someone else as a form of revision -Last hour/minutes before exam I’d spent teaching my class what I know. I’d sum up everything I know to my best ability and it would help me a lot! I would also turn it into a bit of show, telling people my mnemonic aids and using silly language. Not only did I really revise what I know but often I helped others too
Try to make it as fun as possible -Make it silly and fun. Use nicknames for famous people and say things in the silliest way possible. You are way more likely to remember information when it’s fun!
Rest is more important -Do not exhaust yourself and do not push yourself beyond your limits. You will only mix up the information in your brain and you’ll feel really bad. Know when to accept you can’t do more and move on.
Trust the process -We have a saying “Morning is wiser than evening”. If you feel like you know nothing and it’s late at night, instead of staying up, just go to bed. Trust your brain. In the morning you’ll know more than you thouht you do!
I myself use every single one of these and they made my life so much easier. I hope it will help you too and have an amazing week!

If you are bored and struggling to find things to do while in quarantine, then upgrading your work/study space is one great option. I recently just changed and re-decorated my study space with little plants and I feel so much more productive now!
p/s: I love the aesthetic color scheme sm and hope you all find it helpful!

Pentose Phosphate Pathway
Pentose phosphates (including ribose-5-phosphate) are required for synthesis of
nucleic acids
ATP
cofactors
precursors to amino acids
glucose-6-phosphate is catabolised to form a pentose phosphate and CO2. NADP+ is reduced to NADPH in the oxidative stages
Tumblr media
Stage One: Oxidative stage
3 enzyme catalysed steps
Tumblr media
The dehydrogenases reduce NADP+ to NADPH
In the last step, 6-phospho-gluconate is decarboxylised.
Stage Two: Non oxidative steps
Ribulose-5-phosphate is a pentose phosphate, but it’s not very useful. It can react in 2 initial reactions to produce more useful phosphates.
Tumblr media
both are isomerations catalysed by phosphopentose isomerase
both are readily reversible
relative concentrations determine which way
Ribose-5-phosphate is a component of nucleotides, cofactors etc
Xylulose 5-phosphate gives excess ribulose-5-phosphate something to react with in the second stage of the PPP
Tumblr media
-This makes molecules that can enter glycolysis from excess pentose phosphates formed in the first stage.
Only the first stage is controlled - NADP+ and NADPH compete for binding to glocose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase - therefore if there is lots of NADPH production of it, and pentose phosphates, will decrease
However not all cells require pentose phosphates and NADPH in equal amounts.
the PPP can operate in 3 modes
to supply necessary NADPH and pentose phosphates and make use of any excess materials
Equal requirement
Tumblr media
As above. 1 olecule of lucose-6-phosphate produces 1 molecule of ribose 5-phosphate and 2 NADPH
More ribose-5-phosphate required
eg in rapidly dividing cells - required for nucleotide synthesis
1st oxidative step missed out
2nd runs in opposite direction
Tumblr media
More NADPH required
in cells conducting lots of biosynthesis eg fat cells carrying out fatty acid synthesis
1st oxidative stage working full capacity
ribulose-5-phosphate is converted into glycolytic intermediates in the 2nd stage
these then catabolised to produce ATP or used in glucogenesis to form glucose

January '20
I went back to my university during the first week of January and practiced my central incisor carving, completed manuals and the rest of the month went by without any major event except for an Anatomy Poster Presentation where the whole batch was divided in groups of 6. I luckily had a nice group that included most of my friends and I was appointed the leader. We delivered a presentation on 'Cervical Plexus' and it went down well.
A few days after that I, along with two of my friends went out to explore the city for the first time and had a lot of fun!

How to Become a Good Test Taker
Exams have, and still do, give me anxiety. I have never been the best taker and a lot of that can be chalked up to poor study skills. Before I begin a new chapter in my academic career, I think it’s best to examine how to become an effective test taker. I have always felt that being a good test taker means I understand the material in a thorough sense, to the point where I can teach someone else the same material in my own words and with my own methods. However, test anxiety is a very real issue many of us face. So how do we make it through midterms, finals, and entrance exams?
Tips & Tricks:
Positive Self-Talk- According to a NYT article, “How to Be a Better Test-Taker,” a study published in the journal Emotion, Dr. Beilock and four co-authors in 2011 found that with students anxious about math, the more stress hormone they produced, the worse they did on a test; students with low math anxiety did better the more cortisol they produced. The best way to combat this is to flip the script. Remind yourself that damp palms and a pounding heart accompany all kinds of enjoyable experiences: riding a roller coaster, winning a sports match, kissing someone you really like for the first time. It’s important to be mindful. Recognize that you have these feelings, but associate them with better, more positive things.
Write it down- This is another way of being mindful. The aforementioned article recommends that for 10 minutes you write about your feelings regarding the exam to clear your mind of test-related stress, freeing working memory that can be applied to the exam.
Go into exam day with a game plan- Now that we have our study skills down it’s hard to think where to begin, which contributes (at least for me) to poor study habits and going into the exam uninformed. Use the syllabus effectively, it’s one of your best resources for the class. It’s the best way to help you make a plan. Don’t cram for your exams, they hardly sneak up on you. Start planning from the first class to curate a study schedule. Much of my anxiety comes from feeling underprepared because I never planned for the exam or even thought of what the exam must look like. Much of my study posts can be simplified into three tips:
Use your syllabus
Make a study calendar
Make studying part of your DAILY routine
Everybody’s methods to cope with exam anxiety is different. There’s no right way to make yourself become a more effective test taker. For me, planning and routine work the best. I also do other activities to take my mind off the exam when I’m not studying or prepping like exercising, cooking/baking, or watching my favorite shows and movies. However, my way to overcome my stress might not work for you. It’s all trial and error but I hope these tips help!
