you’re with your cousin nate outside his house in west virginia. both of you are nine. it’s a time before his parents die, before he comes to live with you up north in coal creek. he’s showing you a dead fawn he found and dragged from the edge of the woods; his father–your uncle–says from behind the camera: “jesus.” in the distance stands nate’s mother: everything about her is blurry. she’s a ghost or a figure obscured by smoke, dead already, even before the reckoning you’ve been secretly praying for occurs. somewhere to your left a dog howls. up above the sky brightens.

i almost even forgot how great our group was back then, and how fucking awesome it still is now.
i know it’s a kind of cliche to talk about “those kinds of friends you instantly reconnect with after months, years, of not talking to them” but man, these people are so exactly that.
listening to my Korean R&B music out of a bluetooth speaker at 12 AM, next to an orange dim street light, sitting on the trunk of his truck, laughing at stupid jokes, being real without talking
i can’t really paint the picture right now, but it was just really great. and they are not just high school friends, they’re my middle school friends. i haven't even gotten the chance to see them as much during the high school years, and yet after all this time, we were all together again.
(sidenote: and i never once felt like “oh, that’s why i stopped hanging out with them as much” i never had a surge of “these people aren’t good for me” like i do sometimes. it was just really genuine.)
i forget how precious that group is to me.
