Murphamy Week - Day 7 (Wrong Number AU)

When his phone rings at 2am on a Saturday night, Murphy’s first reaction is to tell whoever it is to fuck off or he’ll come to their house and eat the shingles off their roof. He’s only a little taken aback when the voice on the other side says, “You’re not Octavia” in a tone that conveys confusion, worry, and amusement.

He’s still not entirely sure how the conversation became him giving a complete stranger directions home after googling the random phone booth the guy was phoning from, thinking it was his sister’s number. It happens though and Murphy doesn’t pay it that much attention.

Until the stranger phones again two weeks later and a half-asleep Murphy says “still not Octavia” to which he gets the response of “fuck… wait no, this could be better, you’re gay right?”

However the stranger figures out he was queer, he couldn’t tell you, but he is and that leads to Murphy giving the stranger dating advice which is really not what he was expecting his Wednesday night to go.

On the third phone call, they exchange names and on the fifth, he learns that Bellamy Blake is only a few years older than him. After their sixth phone call, Murphy gets a new photography gig that takes him past the phone booth on the way. A split-second decision he immediately regrets leads to him putting a post-it note on the phone, saying “hello stranger” while he’s on his way home.

There’s a rose waiting on the phone the next day and Murphy can’t help bringing it up to his nose and Bellamy starts their next phone call by saying “Hey stranger.”

Soon enough, they’re talking every day, leaving post-it notes for each on the phone booth and Murphy finds himself missing Bellamy if he can’t call.

When the guy finally gets round to getting his phone fixed, Murphy gets an adorable photo of Bellamy with an apology for waking him up for directions. The first thing Murphy does is phone him up and yell at him for thinking he needs to apologise.

The second thing he does is ask Bellamy out to dinner and the third thing he does? Well, surely, that doesn’t need to be spelled out.

Murphamy Week - Day 5 (Online Relationship)

Quitting his job to start a knitting YouTube channel sounds like a terrible idea and is most definitely a terrible idea and yet it’s exactly what Bellamy does on the eve of his 25th birthday because he’s tired of being yelled at by his boss for stupid mistakes he hasn’t made and he’s tired of waking up at six in the morning and he’s tired of the two hour drive to work every day.

When his channel blows up, he’s definitely aware that most of his audience watch because he’s pretty attractive and has a toned stomach and all that, but Bellamy couldn’t care less about that. He gets to knit jumpers and blankets for a living and people are willing to pay for him to make the most ridiculous things ever.

He’s been doing it for around two years when he’s invited to join a massive gaming tournament for YouTubers and streamers and he thinks why the fuck not. He’s matched with one John Murphy, a gaming YouTuber known for being snarky, sarcastic and very damn gay. They bicker as they practice for the tournament, they bicker as they play, they bicker about East Coast v.s West Coast, they bicker about how to pronounce scone, and they bicker as they come second in the tournament.

Really, it shouldn’t have been surprising when their audiences began shipping them and from that point on, it’s only a bit of a rocky road into a relationship between them.

He’s always been told that he can’t fall in love over texts and over Skype, but Murphy’s face is the last thing he sees before he falls asleep and his name is on the tip of his tongue when he wakes, and any spare second he gets, his mind wanders to Murphy. At night, he finds himself hugging a pillow tight wishing it was Murphy.

The next step, he guesses, is moving across the country and it’s a step he’s willing to take.

Carpe Faba

"Veni, vidi, cepi." The voice doesn't make him jump nor does the sudden-seeming presence of another person beside though he is a little taken aback. The man looks at his camera and then back, "I came, I saw, I captured."

Murphy regards him and then smirks, "You speak Latin to strangers often?"

They bring Seth home on a Tuesday afternoon. The sun is high in the sky, burning down on their necks as Bellamy reaches into the car to unbuckle the seatbelt of the five-year-old, their son.

It still shocks him to say it, even in his head.

Bellamy: What pisses me off about my male friends is they- well, couples is great, isn't it? When you're in a relationship, but then men feel this obligation to pretend she won't let him come out, when really they just don't want to say to their mates, "I'd rather watch a film and shag than listen to you moan on about your life."

Bellamy: But they go, "I'd love to come down to the boozer but she won't fuckin let up."

Bellamy: Just say it: your relationship is better than your friendship with me. I'll take it, I don't have a shit.

Murphy: The this is Bell, they're not even watching a DVD or having sex, they'd just rather not go out with you.

AO3 won the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Related Work!

Here’s the speech given by Naomi Novik when the award was accepted:

All fanwork, from fanfic to vids to fanart to podfic, centers the idea that art happens not in isolation but in community. And that is true of the AO3 itself. We’re up here accepting, but only on behalf of literally thousands of volunteers and millions of users, all of whom have come together and built this thriving home for fandom, a nonprofit and non-commercial community space built entirely by volunteer labor and user donations, on the principle that we needed a place of our own that was not out to exploit its users but to serve them.

Even if I listed every founder, every builder, every tireless support staff member and translator and tag wrangler, if I named every last donor, all our hard work and contributions would mean nothing without the work of the fan creators who share their work freely with other fans, and the fans who read their stories and view their art and comment and share bookmarks and give kudos to encourage them and nourish the community in their turn.

This Hugo will be joining the traveling exhibition that goes to each Worldcon, because it belongs to all of us. I would like to ask that we raise the lights and for all of you who feel a part of our community stand up for a moment and share in this with us.

i regretfully dont have as much time to spend on murphamy week as id like and the prompts didnt really speak to me that much but im gonna try and get something out for every day so if anyone wants to read my fic for day 1, here it is

lest we defy the stars

Murphy finds him at the viewing platform, staring at the burning Earth. They've been up in space for two years now and yet he still hasn't gotten familiar enough with Murphy's much stealthier presence as to not jump when he speaks.

"You know that the Earth isn't going to be put out by you staring at it, right?"

He huffs out a laugh, not turning to face him, "No, I didn't, Murphy. I thought I had a magical gaze that can reverse nuclear devastation."

The light tone to his voice is forced and Murphy sees right through it, "So why do you come and stare at it almost every day?"
