Hello folks, its been a long time since I've been on here. I will not be continuing the bracket since it causes me a lot of stress to set up, i have had a great time reading all of your propaganda. Your submissions have gotten me to finally check out great comet which i really enjoyed. On that note i am not deleting this blog rather i am turning it into a sideblog. since i decided that it would be a good new years resolution to check out at least one new musical per week, this can be by seeing it live, watching a bootleg/pro-shot, listening to the album or reading a script. I will be starting this in December already but if i miss a week it wont have consequences until January. Suggestions are welcome in my askbox (please do keep in mind that the more popular a musical is the bigger the chance is that i might know it already)

Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind
the contrast between the two parts yet the way they fit perfectly together?? every spring awakening song is literally genius i cannot stress this enough
my sister and i saw this musical only because we got a season's pass to the local theater for christmas. we did not know what to expect going in, and did not expect to leave the theater with a new favorite musical.
Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind is haunting, and i don't say that lightly. i couldn't forget this musical and this song if i tried.
I haven't even seen Spring Awakening but this song is just so good at telling the stories of Moritz and Ilse's past and it's just good I love it so much

Could We Start Again Please
LITERALLY I'VE BEEN LIVING TO SEE YOU‼️DYING TO SEE YOU BUT IT SHOULDN'T BE LIKE THIS‼️
it's about yearning it's about regret in some versions it's about judas and mary magdalene bonding over having a crush on jesus it's about being a victim to the narrative or "the plan" and wanting to stop it in its tracks even though your fate is sealed, but most of all to ME it's about a woman who lost the man she loved before she was ever able to tell him how she felt. to me jesus dies right after magdalene even allows herself the vulnerability of acknowledging she likes him.
there are a bunch of versions of this song if this one is not to your taste so many sad little flavors

the Point of No Return
This is a really cool duet because it’s both duet within the world of the show itself, between two characters in the opera-within-the-musical, Don Juan Triumphant, and between the two leads of the musical itself, Christine and the (disguised) Phantom.
It’s passionate seduction song of two people about to give into their feelings, except it’s both the characters in the show we’re watching and the characters in the show they’re performing.
A passionate sensual duet in an in-musical opera that was created by the Phantom so he can try and rizz up this Swedish soprano (this plan goes horribly wrong btw)
You Can't Have Me (If You Don't Have Him)
You Can’t Have Me (If You Don’t Have Him) is such a fun song, has a brilliant tap break, and is literally a duet about how inseparable the two leads are.

One Step Ahead
It has a swordfight!!!!!!!!
Basically, they were partners in both a professional and romantic sense but then one of them had an accident, blamed it on the other (unfortunately he was kind of correct) and then instead of dealing with it normally and moving on, he launched a four year long revenge plot against his ex. This is the culmination of all that-what is essentially their divorce.
a duet sung by two gay spies in the 60’s of which there like kinda exs at this point because one kinda left the other for dead and then he spent four years plotting revenge on him for leaving
the song is a banger
a Little Priest
What’s better than two people making cannibalism puns for 7 min?
They make murder and cannibalism sound cool and fun :)
OK ITS SOOOOO GOOD the original is so good oml,
it's just two absolutely deranged individuals making cannibal puns and then laughing their asses off about it in what could now be considered as the archaic form of "riffing on a bit with a friend for so long that you forget what the bit was originally about" and it's just soooo good
A comic song that is also a seduction in the classic sense of the word

Le Balcon
it's romeo and juliet. do i need to say anymore
a Breakfast over Sugar (In Trousers)
It’s so beautiful and heartbreaking.
Marvin’s wife having figured out he’s cheating on her with a man begs him to stay anyway. Marvin repeats that him leaving would be better for the both of them.
In the script there’s a note: “His WIFE, understanding everything, wants him to stay. MARVIN wants to go. Or MARVIN wants to stay. She wants him to go. Anyway, he’s going.”
And everything’s just so unresolved and the two parts tangle with each other and convey so much emotion with their beautiful harmonies.
The part where they sing over each other like “Pass the sugar please - I can’t believe we’ve worked - you can’t go on as if you’re dying - to end up this way - the martyr just won’t play hit me, strip me - strip me down but STAYYYY” has me constantly in tears completely breathless. The wife’s vocals and raw emotion just.

The Confrontation
there’s really great duality in the overlapping parts and you learn a bit more about Javert and the ending is just OUGH LOVE IT
Who doesn't love a fight in musical form? It just makes the emotions that much more intense.
The overlapping parts are so good and the song is addicting to listen to. I love how Javert is so stubborn in his part while Valjean’s seems to be looser in a way. And also the Javert low note at the beginning changed me as a person. And…. there is soooo much tension.
firstly, the makeup of the song. it’s lyrics are amazing and work so well with both parts layered over each other. layering two different strands of dialogue over each other can be extremely difficult to work into a beautiful song. the song “achilles come down,” for example, overcomes this challenge with simply changing the filters on one part. “for the first time in forever (reprise)” from frozen simply has one small part layered. but “the confrontation” manages to have the entire song (other than the tiny intro) be two separate simultaneous parts and it still flows well and sounds AMAZING. it’s so much fun to sing as a duet and a fun challenge to try to sing both parts at once as best you can.
secondly, what it means. it shows how despite everything, jean valjean wants to reason with javert instead of fighting, and that javert seems almost afraid to forgive or help him. it also lets us see a more vulnerable part of javert, giving our villain heart and character. javert has suffered so much and found so much hope in being inflexible and never changing that hes terrified of change, or in the fact that someone bad can be really a complex person. he says the lines “men like you can never change, men like me can never change” and “i was born inside a jail, i was born with scum like you, i am from the gutter too”. just a few lines show us so much on why he behaves the way he does and it’s heartbreaking. it also shows how valjean KNOWS his strength and power, and he threatens javert with it. but when he’s beaten him, the choreography of the musical shows valjean simply leaving javert there instead of hurting him.
the vocal parallels between Javert going down on “you’ll wear a different chain” and Valjean going up on “my race has not yet run” literally I’m so obsessed w this song I can’t
Lily's Eyes
Lily's Eyes is a beautiful and haunting duet sung between two brothers about their love for the late Lily Craven, but they aren't singing it to each other which is what makes it so brilliant.
It's a song of both triumph and unrequited love and the layering of the two voice parts (Mandy Patinkin's soaring tenor with Robert Westenberg's resonant baritone) is stunning. It's here we learn about the antagonist's motivation, it's here that Mary Lennox's presence really starts to affect the rest of the household. It's a sort of reprieve from the chaotic storms enveloping the plot at this point in the story, and it is packed with *so much emotion*.
"Imagine me, a lover..." "I longed for the day, she'd turn and see me standing there..." "...Would God have let her stay!!"

I Think I Got You Beat
The emotional journey of Shrek and Fiona and how they view each other, the overlapping section culminating in one line in unison... it's just so good
I know people think of Shrek as "just a meme musical" but it's so much more than that, and this song is one of the reasons why (even if it leans a little heavy on the bodily function humor by the end).
Here we have two characters who are not seeing eye to eye, and who think they are polar opposites, realize they have more in common than either could have imagined. By finding each other after both being told they weren't wanted, they have a chance at healing.
What starts as a competition over who had it worse turns into both of them finding common ground and actually getting to know each other for real.
True romance is being able to be your complete self with your partner, a message I believe this musical wholeheartedly embraces.
