Fire rages on in Kolkata building for over 9 hrs | Kolkata News - Net4News

KOLKATA: A massive fire broke out on Monday morning at a four-storey building here, which houses several small business establishments and storage rooms, a senior official said. Thirty fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the blaze that has been raging on for more than nine hours in the congested Colootala area building, he said. No casualty has been reported so far, the fire department official stated. Heaps of garments and plastic materials were stacked inside several rooms of the building which have further helped spread the fire, he pointed out. A couple of blasts occurred inside the building, probably because of the cooking gas cylinders kept inside, in the midst of the fire-fighting operations, the official noted. "Our men are fighting tooth and nail to douse the fire. The rooms inside were filled with inflammable materials which helped the fire spread relatively faster. The area being very congested, firefighters are having a difficult time dousing the blaze," he maintained. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the official said. State fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose, who rushed to Colootala as soon as the news broke, has been supervising the firefighting operations since morning. Incidentally, Bose complained of uneasiness during the day during supervision, the senior fire department official said. School in Kozhikode’s Kattullamala sitting on a powder keg

A rural school in Kozhikode’s Kattullamala village is facing a huge safety threat from unregulated explosions in a nearby granite quarry. The newly constructed building of Nirmala AUP School in Kayanna panchayat has already developed several cracks on its walls making it tough for the school authorities to even secure the operational permit from the local panchayat.Since 2018, students here have been going through a harrowing experience because of the alleged apathy of Revenue and Geology departments in looking into their safety concerns. There are 150 students at the school now who are getting ready for the formal reopening of the institution on November 1.Along with the school, there are nearly 40 houses in the area which have been suffering the impact of frequent explosions. According to local residents, the quarry owners, who managed to secure clearance for their commercial operation, are least bothered about addressing local grievances.“Though there is an action committee which is actively involved in field-level protests, it is yet to evoke any favourable action from the district-level authorities. We cannot let our students remain in a scary environment,” says a teacher from the school who has already knocked at several doors for a speedy intervention. Parents-Teachers Association leaders from the school say they have been waiting for a favourable action from the District Collector who can easily visit the location and verify the authenticity of the complaints. “If the quarry is continuing its operations, we will be forced to shift our children from here and it will surely lead to the closure of this institution with 60 years’ history in this remote village,” they add.Meanwhile, Revenue Department sources say the complaints related to unregulated explosions in the area by various action committees and local residents are currently under the consideration of government panels. LUCKNOW: Founder of Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia (PSP-L), Shivpal Yadav, on Monday managed to dodge the police cordon outside his house to leave for Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people died in violence on Sunday. However, the police swung into action and intercepted him in Jankipuram where he was detained with his supporters. He was brought to the police lines and let off later in the evening. Talking to media persons, Shivpal described the Lakhimpur Kheri case as "the most saddening and brutal incidents of independent India". "Farmers are being made to pay with their lives for raising voice against farm laws. It has never happened before in independent India," Shivpal said. The PSP-L chief demanded that the Union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son Ashish Mishra allegedly led the convoy of cars that crushed four farmers to death, must resign from his post immediately. "The minister’s son should be arrested and the kin of the deceased be given ex gratia of Rs 1 crore and a government job. 70% of India's adult population administered first dose of Covid-19 vaccine: Mandaviya | India News

NEW DELHI: Seventy percent of India's adult population has been administered the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Monday as the total doses given across the country crossed 91 crore. According to officials, 25 percent of the adult population has been administered both doses. "Strong Nation, Rapid Vaccination: India has administered the first dose of #Covid19 vaccine on 70% of the population. Under PM @NarendraModiji, India is achieving new landmarks in the fight against the pandemic. Keep it up India, let us fight Corona," the minister said in a tweet. The cumulative Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country under the nationwide anti-coronavirus inoculation drive crossed 91 crore on Monday. More than 71 lakh vaccine doses have been administered till 9.50 PM, according to the Co-WIN portal. The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late night. More than 5.67 crore (5,67,37,905) balance and unutilised vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs to be administered, the ministry said. According to government data, the average daily doses administered in a month increased from 19.69 lakh in May to 39.89 lakh in June, then further to 43.41 lakh in July and to 59.19 lakh in August. The average daily vaccination in September has been 79.08 lakh per day. The vaccination exercise as a tool to protect the most vulnerable population groups in the country from Covid-19 continues to be regularly reviewed and monitored at the highest level, the ministry underlined. The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16 with healthcare workers (HCWs) getting inoculated in the first phase. The vaccination of frontline workers (FLWs) started on February 2. The next phase of Covid-19 vaccination commenced from March 1 for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions. The country launched vaccination for all people aged more than 45 years from April 1. India's coal crisis brews as power demand surges, record global prices bite - Net4News

CHENNAI: Indian utilities are scrambling to secure coal supplies as inventories hit critical lows after a surge in power demand from industries and sluggish imports due to record global prices push power plants to the brink. Over half of India's 135 coal-fired power plants have fuel stocks of less than three days, government data shows, far short of federal guidelines recommending supplies of at least two weeks. Prices of power-generation fuels are surging globally as electricity demand rebounds with industrial growth, tightening supplies of coal and liquefied natural gas. India is competing against buyers such as China, the world's largest coal consumer, which is under pressure to ramp up imports amid a severe power crunch. Rising oil, gas, coal and power prices are feeding inflationary pressures worldwide and slowing the economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. "The supply crunch is expected to persist, with the non-power sector facing the heat as imports remain the only option to meet demand but at rising costs," ratings agency S&P's unit Crisil said in a report this week, adding it expected Asian coal prices to continue to increase. "Coal inventory at (Indian) thermal plants will improve only gradually by next March." Indian power producers locked in long-term agreements with distribution utilities cannot pass on higher input costs unless a clause to pass on such expenses is written into the contract. Traders and officials at utilities said buying by power plants dependent of imported coal had been muted due to high prices. India's average weekly coal imports during August through late September - when global coal prices rallied over 40% to all-time highs - dropped by over 30% from the average for the first seven months of the year, according to data compiled by Kplr. The import total for the most recent week was under 1.5 million tonnes, the smallest in at least two years. Websites of major coal importing state utilities did not show any new tenders seeking new cargoes this month. Coal prices from major exporters have scaled all-time highs recently, with Australia's Newcastle prices rising roughly 50% and Indonesian export prices up 30% in the last three months. The September Indonesia coal price benchmark was as much as seven times higher than similar quality fuel sold by Coal India to Indian utilities, according to Reuters calculations. "Traders who bought coal from Coal India in the spot auctions are making a killing. They are selling at 50-100% premiums," said a senior official in charge of sourcing coal at a large Indian utility operator. State-run Coal India said this week higher global prices of coal and freight rates have pushed utilities dependent on imported coal to curtail power production, resulting in higher dependence on domestic coal-fired plants. India is the world's second largest importer of coal despite having the fourth largest reserves. Utilities make up about three-fourths of its overall consumption, with Coal India accounting for over 80% of the country's production. Industrial power demand surge Power plants are also grappling with surging demand from industries as economic activity rebounds from the latest wave of Covid-19 pandemic. Power consumption in industrialised states including Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu grew between 13.9% and 21% in the three months ended September, a Reuters analysis of data from federal grid regulator POSOCO showed. The three states account for nearly a third of India's annual electricity consumption. Industries and offices account for half the country's annual electricity consumption. During the last two quarters of the fiscal year ending March 2021, the residential and agricultural sectors were key drivers of power consumption after the first wave of coronavirus. "This year we have seen a tremendous growth in industrial demand," said Shahmeena Husain, managing director of Gujarat's electricity regulator told Reuters. While there have not been any large scale power outages in India, deficits have increased nearly four-fold from the negligible levels recorded last year, POSOCO data showed. The shortages have so far been mostly restricted to northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Kashmir, the data showed. "Domestic consumption increased by about 10% in the last two years because of work from home and air conditioning," a senior Tamil Nadu government official told Reuters. MoRD team conducts Gram Sabha in Bibinagar

Joint Secretary Charanjit Singh and Director Raghvendra Pratap Singh of the Rural Livelihoods division of the Ministry of Rural Development on Saturday visited Bibinagar and conducted a Gram Sabha at Meedi tanda. Identification of works under the Employment Guarantee Scheme and listing them on priority-basis for development is the agenda of the visit, they said. The Gram Sabha exercises, across select villages in the State, with 2020-23 as the target, will continue till January 31. The officials said that the plan was to start nearly 30 water conservation methods at every village level. Rain water harvesting, recharge pits and rejuvenation of water tanks, are some of them. JARINJE: Soldiers with a Nato-led peacekeeping mission are keeping watch at the Kosovo-Serbia border after the two countries reached a deal to deescalate tensions triggered by a dispute over vehicle license plates. Kosovo Force troops from the United States, Italy and Poland were seen patrolling on Saturday as ethnic Serbs removed the trucks they had used to block the road to two border crossings while protesting the Kosovo government's decision not to allow vehicles with Serbian license plates into the country. Kosovar special police forces also pulled back from the border, where they were deployed two weeks ago to remove the license plates from entering cars and to replace them with temporary registration in Kosovo. The government in Pristina said they were replicating what Serbia had done to Kosovar motorists for a decade. Kosovo was a Serbian province before it declared independence in 2008, and Serbian troops and ethnic Albanian separatists fought a bloody war in Kosovo during the 1990s. European Union mediator Miroslav Lajcak persuaded representatives from the neighboring Balkan nations this week to let the Kosovo Force (KFOR) troops take over the areas for the next 14 days. "As from this weekend and for the next two weeks, KFOR will maintain a temporary robust and agile presence in the area," a statement from the Nato mission said. As part of the agreement, both countries will put stickers over the other's name and emblem on license plates of vehicles entering their territory. KFOR, made up of around 4,000 troops from 28 countries, is led by Nato with support from the United Nations, the European Union and others. Its aim is to stave off lingering ethnic tensions between Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority and minority ethnic Serbs. हाइलाइट्स - गोरखपुर में पुलिस पिटाई में मारे गए मनीष गुप्ता का शव कानपुर पहुंचा - मुआवजे का 10 लाख का चेक लौटाया, 50 लाख और सरकारी नौकरी की मांग - पीड़ित परिवार आज कानपुर में म���ख्यमंत्री से करेगा मुलाकात कानपुर गोरखपुर में पुलिस की कथ‍ित पिटाई से दम तोड़ने वाले शख्स मनीष गुप्ता का शव कानपुर पहुंचते ही बुधवार सुबह हंगामा खड़ा हो गया। पीड़ित परिवार और क्षेत्रीय लोग आंसुओं में डूब गए। घटना से बेहद आक्रोशित परिवार काफी मशक्कत के बाद भी शव का अंतिम संस्कार करने को राजी नहीं हुआ। परिवारीजनों ने मुआवजे का 10 लाख रुपये का चेक देने लेने से भी इनकार कर दिया। पुलिस कमिश्नर ने ऐलान किया कि पीड़ित परिवार को गुरुवार को मुख्यमंत्री से मिलवाया जाएगा। रात तक परिवार 50 लाख मुआवजे और सरकारी नौकरी की मांग पर अड़ा था। रियल एस्टेट कारोबारी मनीष गुप्ता (36) का शव लेकर परिवारीजन बुधवार सुबह 9:30 बजे अपने घर जनता नगर, बर्रा पहुंचे। देखते ही देखते भारी संख्या में स्थानीय लोग और राजनीतिक दलों के लोग मौके पर पहुंच गए। पुलिस के खिलाफ जोरदार नारेबाजी के बीच अधिकारियों ने मनीष के शव के अंतिम संस्कार के प्रयास करने शुरू किए। पुलिस और प्रशासनिक अधिकारियों से नोकझोंक के बीच समाजवादी पार्टी के विधायक इरफान सोलंकी और अमिताभ वाजपेई मौके पर पहुंचे और सरकार-पुलिस विरोधी नारेबाजी शुरू की। समाजवादी कार्यकर्ताओं की डीसीपी साउथ रवीना त्यागी से झड़प भी हुई। काफी गहमागहमी के बीच पुलिस कमिश्नर असीम अरुण ने मोर्चा संभाला। 50 लाख मुआवजा, सरकारी नौकरी और केस कानपुर ट्रांसफर करने की मांग पीड़ित परिवार की मांग थी कि उन्हें मुख्यमंत्री से मिलवाया जाए। पूरे केस की सीबीआई जांच करवाने के साथ केस कानपुर ट्रांसफर किया जाए। गोरखपुर में केस की निष्पक्ष जांच संभव नहीं है। शासन से बात करने के बाद पुलिस कमिश्नर ने पीड़ित परिवार को आश्वासन दिया कि उन्हें गुरुवार को कानपुर आगमन के दौरान मुख्यमंत्री से मिलवाया जाएगा, लेकिन पीड़ित परिवार 50 लाख रुपये मुआवजे, सरकारी नौकरी और केस कानपुर ट्रांसफर करने की मांग पर अड़ा था और शव के अंतिम संस्कार को राजी नहीं हुआ। पीड़ित परिवार ने चेक लेने से क‍िया इनकार दोपहर बाद प्रशासनिक अधिकारी 10 लाख रुपये मुआवजे का चेक लेकर पहुंचे, लेकिन पीड़ित परिवार ने चेक लेने से इनकार कर दिया। शाम को कांग्रेस नेता विकास अवस्थी के नेतृत्व में कांग्रेसी पीड़ित परिवार से मिले और उनकी कांग्रेस महासचिव प्रियंका गांधी से फोन पर बात करवाई। प्रियंका ने पीड़ित परिवार को हरसंभव मदद का आश्वासन दिया। रात 9 बजे तक पुलिस कमिश्नर और डीएम पीड़ित परिवारीजनों से बंद कमरे में बातचीत कर रहे थे। मीटिंग 2 घंटे से ज्यादा समय से जारी थी। मुख्यमंत्री के समक्ष रखूंगी मांग दूसरी तरफ मनीष की पत्नी मीनाक्षी ने आरोप लगाया कि अपनी मांगों को वह लगातार ट्वीट कर रही थीं, लेकिन जानबूझकर उनका ट्विटर अकाउंट बंद करवा दिया गया। उन्‍होंने कहा क‍ि मैं कल अपनी मांगों को मुख्यमंत्री के समक्ष रखूंगी। मेरे पति को ड्यूटी पर छह पुलिसकर्मियों ने मार डाला... हमने अभी तक यह तय नहीं किया है कि उनके शव का अंतिम संस्कार कब किया जाए। कोई आतंकियों के महिमामंडन की हिम्मत नहीं कर सकता: योगी गुरुवार को सीएम से म‍िलेगा पीड़ित परिवार असीम अरुण, पुलिस कमिश्नर, कानपुर ने कहा क‍ि कानपुर पुलिस पीड़ित परिवार के साथ है। उन्हें गुरुवार को मुख्यमंत्री से मिलवाया जाएगा। मांगें शासन को प्रेषित कर दी गई हैं। उधर, कानपुर डीएम विशाख अय्यर ने कहा क‍ि सीएम योगी आदित्यनाथ कल अपने कानपुर दौरे के दौरान मनीष के परिवार के सदस्यों से मिलेंगे। Read the full article

GORAKHPUR: Basti police in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday arrested 15 persons for allegedly shaming a teenaged couple publicly by blackening their faces and parading them in a Basti village with garland of shoes around their necks over their alleged love affair on Tuesday. The district magistrate (DM) and superintendent of police (SP) inspected the place of the incident, and assured the families of the victims of speedy justice. Both the boy and the girl belong to the SC community. “On the complaint of the boy’s mother on Tuesday, police registered a case under sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object, 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentionally insult and provocation), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 355 (using criminal force to any person) of IPC and sections 74, 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. During the probe, SC/ST Act was also added. On Wednesday, 15 accused were arrested,” said ASP Deependra Nath Chaowdhary. The arrested persons are Vinay Kumar (44), Pawan Kumar (20), Rajkumar (24), Mannu (35), Sukhlal (22), Jaswant (27), Jagdish (27), Pasdesi (30), Shyamji (22), Lalbahadur (23), Sarju Maurya (25), Bheem Singh (21), Krishna Kumar (35), Gangaram Maurya (55) and Ankush Maurya (22) of Singhi village in Basti district, said police. Himayatsagar gates closed - Net4News

Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board has begun to shut down the gates of Himayatsagar reservoir, as the flood water has started to recede. Ten gates of Himayatsagar, out of the total 17, were lifted by two feet in order to release the excess water into the Musi for the past two days. On Wednesday morning, eight gates were downed and two kept open to release 1,400 cusecs of water downstream. However, flood water to the tune of 1,900 cusecs continues to arrive into Osmansagar, hence four gates have been kept open to release 2,100 cusecs of water into the Musi, a statement from the water board said. At 5 p.m. on Wednesday, for a full tank level of 1,763.5 feet, water brimmed at 1,763.45 feet in Himayatsagar, while in Osmansagar, water came up to the FTL of 1,790. कुमार सौरभ, पीलीभीत उत्तर प्रदेश के पीलीभीत जिले में बेटे से नाराज बहू को विदा कराने गए ससुर की सड़क हादसे में मौत हो गई। पिता की मौत की जानकारी मिलने के बाद बेटे ने भी फांसी लगाकर आत्महत्या कर ली। सेहरामऊ उत्तरी थाना क्षेत्र के महुआगुंदे गांव के रहने वाले कन्हैया लाल मंगलवार को अपने बेटे नरेंद्र की पत्नी को विदा कराने उसके मायके गए थे। मायके पहुंचे ससुर से बहू ने ससुराल जाने को मना कर दिया था। बहू के मना करने के बाद कन्हैया लाल स्थानीय ग्राम प्रधान रामपाल के साथ घर लौट रहे थे। इसी दौरान सड़क दुर्घटना में कन्हैया लाल की दर्दनाक मौत हो गई और ग्राम प्रधान रामपाल गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए। पिता की मौत की जानकारी मिलने के बाद बेटे ने लगाई फांसी सड़क हादसे में कन्हैया लाल की मौत हो जाने की जानकारी जब नरेंद्र उर्फ मझले (26) को हुई तो वह गमगीन हो गया। पिता का शव गांव पहुंचने से पूर्व ही नरेंद्र ने मंगलवार देर रात खेतों में जाकर पीपल के पेड़ पर फांसी लगाकर आत्महत्या कर ली। गांव के बाहर स्थित पीपल के पेड़ पर नरेंद्र का शव बुधवार को सुबह लटकता मिला। पति-पत्नी के बीच चल रहा था विवाद जानकारी के मुताबिक, नरेंद्र की शादी दो साल पहले बंडा थाना क्षेत्र के गांव से हुई थी। पति से अनबन होने के कारण नरेंद्र की पत्नी पिछले 1 साल से अपने मायके में ही रह रही थी। ससुराल में मायके पक्ष के बीच पंचायत फैसलों का दौर चल रहा था। मंगलवार को नरेंद्र के पिता कन्हैया लाल इस विवाद को सुलझाने के लिए गांव के प्रधान रामपाल के साथ नरेंद्र की ससुराल गए थे। वहीं, पूरनपुर सीओ वीरेंद्र विक्रम सिंह ने बताया कि युवक के फांसी लगाई जाने की सूचना पुलिस को मिली थी। शव को कब्जे में लेकर पोस्टमॉर्टम के लिए भेजा गया है। जानकारी मिली है कि मृतक के पिता की भी सड़क हादसे में मौत हुई है। Source link Read the full article
