Pros and Cons of UHMWPE Body Armor
The UHMWPE body armor is the latest trend in the armor world. The need of protection is more than the need of weapon or the firearm. The latest armors offer protection just like the traditional armor but they have their own pros and cons.

The UHMWPE body armor or the modern armor is also bullet resistant but there mechanism of action or working is different than the conventional armors. Instead of deflecting the bullet they catch the bullet and prevent its penetration by distributing its energy across a wide area of fabric. It is should be noted that the energy transfer happens away from the impact point very soon so that little energy is deposited to that point.

The modern armors are made up of polyethylene fibers instead of Kevlar unlike the old traditional armor. This is the reason they have reduced significantly in weight and their ballistic resistance have improved. The modern armors are also called PE Body armor and have replaced the Aramid armors.
Pros of Aramid Armor They are not easily deformed. They have in general lesser blunt trauma. These armors have high melting point, i.e. over 400 degree C or 750 degree F They have high tensile strength and are resistant to impact and graze damage.
Cons of Aramid Armors They are bulkier than the modern armors. They are more prone to decay when they come in contact with water, moisture and air. They have no compression property at all. They are easily degraded by UV light. They cannot be cut with regular instruments; they need special equipments for cutting.

Pros of UHMWPE The UHMWPE body armors are lighter than the conventional armors and easy to handle. They are more effective, around 40% stronger in temperature less than 90 degree C. They are more resistant to decay when they come in contact with water, moisture and air. They are chemically resistant.
Cons of UHMWPE armor The PE body armors have a low melting point i.e. 130 degree C only They have high modulus of elasticity The backside concave is more. Their performance degree is temperature dependent.
However both types of armors have their own pros and cons which are discussed above, but when it comes to the service, both provide high level security.
