So I just finished season 3 of Aggretsuko and I have feelings!
Most importantly being, THAT MULE GUY WAS A PSYCHO AND HE DESERVES TO ROT IN PRISON FOREVER.
Secondly is Haida.
Haida’s big character arc this season is whether he’ll finally let go of Retsuko or choose to hang on.
SPOILERS AHEAD
After Retsuko gets attacked, she locks herself away at her mom’s house and resides herself to living in fear of the world around her. We see Haida barge into her mom’s home and take Retsuko to karaoke where he proceeds to death metal scream at her about how she’s letting this guy win by locking herself away. He then brings up his feelings for her once again and she, again, rejects him.
While the things Haida says during that death metal scream are very harsh, I, personally, think he says them with the sole intention of getting a rise out of Retsuko.
Retsuko has always expressed her feelings while doing this same heavy metal scream and Haida knows a lot of things have happened to her that she needs to let out. His expression doesn’t even change when Retsuko turns him down again because I don’t think he was expecting her to have changed her mind. I think he brings up his feelings in order to throw that final can of fuel on the fire (and to let her know he’s not letting go).
And it works! Retsuko proceeds to scream her heart out about everything that’s happened since becoming an idol and how she doesn’t have a place in the world.
And what does Haida do? He climbs that metaphorical trash heap Retsuko has positioned herself on and takes her hand because he’s there for her. For whatever reason, whether she wants him there or not, he’s not letting go.
And THAT, my friends, is love.
A love that has no logical reason. It’s obsessive and consuming and doesn’t go away no matter how many times it’s rejected. Haida is intense but he’s intense in a way that our mild-mannered, wants to please everyone, worker bee that screams her head off when she’s pushed too far NEEDS.
