Osamu is right. Ryo feared him. Ryo definitely feared Ichijouji Osamu. But at the same time he wanted to believe they were friends, maybe only him thought that.

A thick and suffocating silence followed Ryou's request. He didn't meet the other boy's gaze, until he did. And he spoke. And he would later wish that he had done neither and stayed in silence forever.

"I'm tired of this cycle of yours, Akiyama."

"You focus your efforts on little Ken for weeks or months, too afraid to come see me. You muster all your courage into one visit. You ask what you can do for me, and of course, as always, the only thing I have to ask of you is to keep doing what you're doing and focus on Ken instead of me."

Osamu spoke coldly, but not particularly aggressive. Merely disillusioned and exhausted at always.

"All the while you seem to be either oblivious to our surroundings or blissfully ignorant. You've never once commented directly about it, something I truly fail to grasp if I'm apparently so dear to you."

"Do you- do you even know what this is? Is this just a motel or a particularly cozy hospital to you?"

I wish you didn’t think of me as an outsider… – is what Ryo wanted to say, but he just kept quiet.

“... I wonder if there’s anything I could do to help you two…”

Again, he has been legitimate. He deeply cared about those boys, and he felt like it was his fault that something happened to Ken. But his memories were foggy and vague – Yet his body seemed to have aged too. Just… his mental age and state seemed completely out of sync with his body and the information given to him.

He felt like it was still… 1999? 2000? Three years have passed!?

“...”

Again, silence. He was still lost there. That visit was a bad idea perhaps? No, he wanted to go there but was a little awkward to say it was his own wish to see the other boy – same age as him – again. But yes, Ken had told him to see Osamu again, he was completely upset though. Little kid was just throwing a tantrum at him, as if he had abandoned everything and everyone.

Was it the case? No, definitely not. Yet, he accepted that lie. Because he didn’t know what actually happened to him after that digital explosion. Has it destroyed his body? Or not? How did he go back there? How… He was clueless.

“If you need anything to be done, tell me.” He broke the silence.

The earnesty mollified Osamu's anger like a wet blanket, doused in guilt, and he criticized himself in his heart, for snapping.

Externally, he verbalized a grumble that sounded vaguely like the word 'whatever', but no real admission of wrongdoing was given. Perhaps he would've been capable if it was Ken, but no one else.

"...It's been three years."

Confused indeed. Over the course of the past, scarce visits, Ryou had shown no inkling of awareness as to why Osamu had been hospitalized. It tracked. Ken wouldn't have volunteered the information, as protective and possessive of his big brother as he was.

But Ryou never asked, and Osamu felt no real desire to surface that morbid topic. Ryou wouldn't be able to understand anyways.

"It's less of a headache for you to just not think about it. There's no helping it, Ken's mental state isn't something that an outsider can understand. And I haven't changed at all."

"Uh... No? I care about you, but I really meant it, I'm busy. Sorry that I couldn't come here before..."

The truth is Ryo was afraid of Osamu. He’s dead for that world, unable to come there more often or else he will be seen as some spirit haunting the human world. And it was quite true though.

No one, not even Ryo himself, was aware that Akiyama Ryo had ceased to exist as a single human being… And turned into vestiges of what once was that person.

“I don’t know what to tell you” Ryo frowned, “But I do care about you too. I care about Kenny too…”

Isn’t it obvious enough?

“... Kenny has changed a lot since we met for the last time. And you… You too, I guess.”“I’m confused, confused about everything happening here… How many years have passed?”

It came out quite needlessly icy.

Osamu knew full well that Ryou didn't really mean that, that he was playing coy, but he had no patience for it, frankly. It irritated him that Ryou felt like he needed a proper justification to visit Osamu in the mental hospital. As if it otherwise didn't make sense.

They hadn't been close before Ryou's disappearance. Hell, Osamu had hated his guts. The lingering sensation of remorse for hating a dead child so much was the only thing letting Ryou be approved for visiting him.

"Ken's the one that you care about, isn't he?"
