this'll hopefully be my last and most conclusive post on the matter re:isshu(/ferriswheel)shipping discourse. please read this before sending me anything regarding the matter:

what masuda said in 2011 is not absolute word of god, or an unchallengeable truth- at least one person involved with bw's story writing has stated that the protagonists were intended to be 16. hilda and hilbert were advertised as being older than any previous protagonists, and n is allegedly 20 in the anime- during the same arc where cherens bw2 role + design is used.

also, pokemon itself isn't afraid to change around characters' ages to better fit their circumstances. anipoke serena, for example, is 10, while her game counterpart appears to be in her late teens. this is to say that while there is a definite, set range for a character's age to be within, ultimately no singular number is going to be universal.

the reason why i personally use 16 over 14 for the bw protag ages has to do with the contents of the actual game first and foremost. all things considered- unova taking inspiration from america where 16 is typically when coming of age occurs, cheren and bianca having adult designs and careers only two years later, and ns role as a narrative foil to the protagonist, 16 is the age that makes the most sense.

there's also the matter of the protagonist and n's relationship itself. the two are, by all means, meant to both contradict and compliment each other, to act as inverted mirrors. n checks all the boxes for what would usually be considered a protagonist (his design, his narrative as a hero, obtainment of a box legendary- pretty much everything except being playable), and he has physical traits that mirror both hilbert and hilda. most importantly, he is canonically obsessed with the protagonist. he thinks that they are meant to be his counterpart, so much so that he wholly believes that they will be able to awaken the opposite dragon without issue. in bw2, he misses them deeply enough to linger in the place they last saw each other, and comment on how he wonders if they'll meet again, and that he wants to tell them how he feels.

then, on the protagonist's end, they literally drop EVERYTHING, leave behind all their friends and family, to search for n when he leaves. that's the only thing they do that we, the player, have no control over.

finally, although pokemon masters is noncanon material, there is just. so much. alluding to their dynamic leaning towards romantic. the best badge you can earn from their reunion event is "N-describable Love". n has dialogue where he indirectly states that he loves hilbert-

and hilberts well. hilbert

all these things would be INCREDIBLY uncomfortable and inappropriate if the audience was meant to see the two of them as definitively an adult and a minor. a two year max age difference just works the best in this context, and the ages of 16 and 18 have evidence to back them. i understand any apprehension and/or discomfort anyone may have with shipping them, and i'm also not going to tell you that you can't headcanon them with a different dynamic (because thatd defeat the whole purpose of pokemon and its encouragement of creative liberty) but this topic has much, much more to it than a glance at the first google result.

tl;dr : isshushipping/ferriswheelshipping is fine. who cares

Anyway, here's my opinions on Legends: Honestly, the game still feels very unpolished, though less so than SwSh. The lighting engine, world design, and quest design leaves a lot to be desired. The majority of characters feel either one-note or an afterthought, and the main quest feels underwritten (though I haven't finished the post-game yet, so that may change.) Overall the game feels like a strong tech demo that got worked up for release to recoup the R&D costs. I have been playing it obsessively for two weeks now during every waking free hour I have. I have like 15 shinies. It may be a dressed-up tech demo but that tech demo is FUN

I am not sure if you know, but I think Hilda/Hilbert x N is implied (unless in hopes of excitement that my favorite childhood ship was canon I was wrong) in Pokemon X and Y. The part where you go and fight someone's Lucario (have not played the game in years so forgive me for any inaccuracies) in Shalour and get a stone, you give it to a hiker guy in that town where he talks about getting a stone.

One thing I did in that game was that I kept talking to him before, during, and after battling the Lucario and getting the stone. But then he says something interesting.

He said that he knows a hiker who LOVED ferris wheels and finally found love. In the previous Black and White games, mainly the sequel, N and Hilda/Hilbert were trying to find each other.

Unfortunately I think the more likely answer to this is the actual, literal hiker NPC that you can ride the ferris wheel with... but I want to believe your interpretation

Were you looking via character tags or the term ferriswheelshipping? The latter isn't used as a tag on AO3 because it doesn't match AO3's tagging system. also because pokemon ship names are mad dumb

You can find the fics for the ship here. There's over 200 and there's a handful of new stuff posted every month. That seems like a good selection to me, but most of my OTPs have been very tiny ships where I am often the only captain so??? Having more than a baker's dozen of things to read seems like a mountain to me. IDK how it looks from your eyes.

My favorite FWS fics are currently private since they were gift pieces for me, but here's one that I enjoy a lot:

Specifically, I want advice for point two. Listen. I don't have an ethical/moral issue with drawing fictional adults having a sexual relationship. Unfortunately, tumblr will not allow me to post N enthusiastically eating Hilda out. Making occasional PG-13 shitposts about two characters having an intimate relationship is A-OK, though.

My issue is that ultimately, Pokemon is a children's series. While personally I have no issue with allowing characters to age/exploring adult themes with adult versions of characters, I understand that it's not only adults on this website. I'd prefer to keep suggestive material away from those that don't want to/legally can't interact with it. However, I also like tagging my stuff with character names to increase reach/exposure and make it easier to find similar content on my blog. I used to just be able to use character+appropriate warning tags for stuff but that doesn't really work anymore.

So my question is for people who use tumblr more than me: how the fuck do I keep things organized/tagged and allow people to opt out in a reasonable fashion. Is there even a good way to do that anymore

Just wanted to say- phenomenal work on the comic. Black 2 was my favorite game growing up, so seeing someone hit the echoes from that so nicely is great. Unova- and N and the protag's story in particular always struck me as unique b/c we actually get to see the aftermath- see the old protag's empty house. Find N deep in the ruins of the castle, still, deep down, wondering about what happened back then. I dig some melancholy- and you've captured those vibes well. (Plus your N's super cute, so...)

GOD ain't it?? I still kick myself that I couldn't get into BW/2 when they were released - the games just didn't grab me at first because I was tiring of the pokemon formula at the time. Really, I have the disappointment that was SwSh to thank, because it got people talking about how good Gen V was and that is what got me to finally give these games a fair shot.

Melancholy is such a good way to put it, though? These characters deserve a chance to grow up and heal, and to be sappy, I think they have the opportunity to understand each other in a way that no one else in their peer group is really able to. There's this sense of responsibility and being failed by the adults around them; this attempt to process what happened and make the best of it that I really enjoy. Especially when you compare Hilda's experience to Rosa's?? Rosa gets to have this great adventure where she becomes a movie star and participates in a fashion show and gets business opportunities and then saves the region. Hilda gets a weird stalker and gets shot out of a cannon into a wall lmao

Thank you for the kind comments!! To answer this question, I'm gonna ask you to get on board with a conceit: Team Plasma is a new-age commune turned dangerous cult under the leadership of Ghetsis. With this in mind, I would argue that in N's absence, a religious schism occurs among Team Plasma members, and we see this happening in BW2. While N is a puppet leader/Ghetsis is the one that was really pulling the strings, it's pretty clear that a lot of Team Plasma members have faith in N's vision of the world. A majority of the Sages in the BW postgame talk about how they favor N's vision and BW2 is littered with NPCs that are ex-Plasma who still are trying to live under N's ideals. We see Ghetsis's Team Plasma, but we also see Anthea and Concordia at the center of the ex-plasma members who are trying to repent for their actions. I would argue that while N is off finding himself, Anthea and Concordia have taken over temporary leadership over the non-Ghetsis sect.

I also think it would be really funny for Anthea and Concordia to orchestrate transferring all of Ghetsis's assets into N's name. Ghetsis disappeared, oh no, what a tragedy. Time to get everything he owns into the name of his next-of-kin!!

(Off screen, a shadow triad member informs Ghetsis that his card has been declined.) As an aside, I dislike the idea of N as this permanent wanderer, if only because he's explicit about loving Unova and still wanting better equality between humans and pokemon. One of the greatest revenges he could have is to be wildly successful where Ghetsis was not - not as a tyrant but as a kind leader. With the amount of people who have faith in N's vision and Ghetsis's resources, I can imagine him setting up an Aether Foundation-esque society with the assistance of Anthea, Concordia, and the Sages that remained loyal. You know, philanthropy without the desire to destroy the whole region to be friends with a cool jellyfish.

Anthea and Concordia are stuck in a balancing act between two roles - the caretakers for a young "king" and adoptive older sisters, and neither is easy when your prophet-little brother is an ooga booga boy that is letting bug pokemon nest in his hair because they're his newest friends.
