A MASTERPOST FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN WITCHCRAFT AND ALTERNATIVE SPIRITUALITY
You are an individual interested in witchcraft. Everything seems big and scary? You don’t know where to begin? This is one of the places you can!
Note: This is an updated, fleshed out and improved version of my original “How To Begin Witchcraft” post which is going to be deleted after this is posted. Due to this some of the text may be familiar, but the resources and tips are updated as I now have a better understanding of a lot of these topics.
What is witchcraft?
Given many descriptions and definitions by every culture since the beginning of time, the modern understanding of witchcraft is as so; witchcraft is a method of bringing a desired action into existence, through a transfer of personal or external power. These transfers can be spells, rituals, ceremonies, the use of crystals, materials found in the earth, through appealing to a divine power. All of these methods are what witches consider ‘magic’.
Of course, no one believes you can just extend your hands out and lightning will rain down upon the world, nor that they can fly or turn people into frogs. People do, however, believe that the actions of an individual have an impact on this world larger than what you would expect. Witchcraft isn’t a definitive ‘this action will happen’ guarantee; it’s more like a forceful, quiet push at the probability. This is why it’s unreasonable to do a spell and expect to win the lottery. Sure it might increase your chances, but if your chances are already tiny, then a small increase isn’t going to do much.
Is there any proof?
Aside from phenomena that science hasn’t found an explanation for yet, no. But asking for proof of witchcraft working is like asking for proof that God exists. What you consider as ‘proof’ can be a matter of perspective.
Do I have to be from a certain place to be a witch?
Witchcraft has no religion, has no race, has no doctrine. Practising the art of witchcraft has no requirements and no set level of education, social standing or skill.
Having said this, if you’re wanting to join an organised group of witches (often referred to as a Coven) or if you want to devote yourself to a specific religion while you are a witch, there is generally some code of conduct or set of rules to follow. This, of course, differs from case to case. Being a member of an organisation or religion is also not compulsory at all, and most witches are not.
What do I have to learn?
Literally whatever you want. While it’s suggested to have a broad basic knowledge of simple things such as a few herbs or moon phases, it’s completely up to you. Just because everyone else seems like they are doing divination, for example, it doesn’t mean you have to.
Important Tips
Don’t feel like you need a witchy label, you don’t.
Don’t feel like you need to worship a deity or be religious at all to be a witch, you don’t.
Practice what feels natural, if something doesn’t click then don’t force it.
It isn’t a rush. There is no time limit on learning. You have your entire life to discover what kind of spirituality you want to pursue. It’s been 10 years for me and I’m still undecided on many topics.
Your mind is your best tool; you don’t need every herb or crystal under the sky to be a practitioner. People all over the world have been practising witchcraft without crystals, herbs and ritual tools since the beginning of time.
Meditation can be a very helpful guide, but don’t feel bad if you can’t get the hang of it. It is not crucial to being a witch and not something you ‘have’ to do.
Like any craft, skill or hobby, friends will help you learn. Join witchy chat rooms, integrate into your local community.
Don’t take all of your resources or information from one source; even me! Having knowledge of a large number of sources will give you a fairer, unbiased viewpoint.
The tips mentioned here are valid for witchcraft as a general term, but some things may differ depending on whether you want to study a specific religion or style of witchcraft. Every practice has a unique way of looking at things, and sometimes different rules to adhere to. (An example of this: the modern consensus is that the intent of the spell you do matters more than the ingredients you use or the techniques you utilise. But some practices and some people believe the complete opposite, that without using all the listed ingredients and actions, the spell will not work.)
Bonus Tips
Take the time to refamiliarise yourself with nature.
Something crucial to note; Wicca is not the same thing as witchcraft, though many authors and blogs use the terms interchangeably when they mean different things. See my “What is Wicca?” guide below for more info on that.
Keeping that in mind, Wicca books are still amazing reads for witches because witchcraft is the form in which Wiccans express their faith.
If anyone tells you that Wicca is an old religion they are misinformed; The religion started around the 1940′s and was a culmination of various practices and superstitions from both other cultures and personal gnosis, all mashed together.
I would advise any beginners to steer clear of Silver Ravenwolf books; they are full of incorrect information. Though this applies to most Wiccan books, SRW is a particularly prominent offender. When you’re new it can be difficult to sift through what is authentic or not, so feel free to check her out later on in your journey if you’re interested.
Don’t take practices from cultures that don’t want to share them; basic human manners!
HAVE FUN.
Make spells up as you go along. There is no need to do a spell you found on the internet instead of something you made yourself, you being new doesn’t make it any less valid.
Don’t worry when spells fail; People don’t expect every prayer to be answered, the same logic should apply to spells.
Age does not equal knowledge; there are many older witches who aren’t as well informed as they seem.
Stay away from the drama, it’s not worth it and will only make you angry. Tumblr is a good resource but can also be a toxic cesspool, so be wary.

That’s about it! The last note I have for you that contradicts with pretty much everything above; you don’t need a massive encyclopedia of information. Feel free to use this post as a reference, something you can refer back to and pick out the parts you like. I wish you the best of luck on your journey! Healing Pictures Spell
Tumblr media
A spell to heal yourself or another (photo creed to me)
Collect: a picture of the person, rose quartz, orange calcite, or opalite, lavender, and cinnamon incense
Begin by blessing the picture with the incense. Let the energy of the incense blend with the vibration of the person in the picture
Set the picture on a flat surface or propped on your altar
Place the crystals either on top of the picture or surrounding it
Sprinkle lavender on the pick and around it
Let the healing energies of the herbs, incense, and crystals embrace the person in the picture
Let the incense finish burning and leave the picture with one of the crystals next to it somewhere. Look at it and send healing thoughts to the person once a day for 7 days

)O( Witch Tip )O(
WHAT IS A SPELL ANYWAY? HOW DO I MAKE A SPELL WORK? DO I NEED TO HAVE THE BLOOD OF A VAMPIRE SPILLED ONTO A CANDLE ON JUNE 6th AT EXACTLY 3:33 AM TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS SPELL FOR A JOB I WANT WORKS? Okay guys, firstly. FIRSTLY. You don’t need vampire blood.  Secondly. Oh dear.  Oh dear, sweet summer child. Look, when you’re first getting into paganism the internet (and book stores) are filled with 2 really big things. - Information - Contradicting Information It’s a LOT. It’s a lot of info, especially if you’re new to all of this. And it’s intimidating and overwhelming and maybe even sounds a little crazy (and honestly some of it is, let’s all admit it okay?).  So here’s the thing, you’re ready to do spell work. But you have no idea what a spell is or how it even works, but you know that a lot of your books (and online forums) say it’s SUPER FREAKING IMPERATIVE that you do a spell at exactly the right with very specific herbs with very specific words or your spell will never work. PERIOD.  That’s not true. So what’s a spell? Here’s what I tell my new witchling friends. A spell is effectively like when you pray to God to change something in your life (or in someone else’s on their behalf, like, if they’re trying to pass a test), only instead of relying on god to do it for you, you’re taking energy (Think radio waves, guys. You can’t see it with the naked eye) that is simply ‘being’ and do it yourself. You use YOUR energy and focus on ONE SINGULAR IDEA and combine it with the static energy (Help my friend pass a test) to make the thought/need/desire to come true. When you get books telling you to do things on specific days at specific times with specific herbs or stones/crystals (or vampire blood apparently. What even?), that’s when you get into the confusion zone. Why use them? What do they do? The reason/theory/belief is that  the energies in these objects resonate more strongly with the goal you’re trying to do.  I consider things like stones and herbs ‘extras’ not the stars of the show. That’s you. You’re focus and energy are the stars of the show. The others help BOOST it–but it doesn’t mean your spell won’t work. It just might take a little longer. If you don’t use herbs or a specific candle color or do it on a specific day or with a specific stone, will your spell not work? It will. There are different ways to do spells, and some find certain ways to do spells more effective for them than others. It’s all about what helps you visualize and focus on your spell more. Some people do well with candle magic. Lighting a flame and ‘releasing’ the energy you focused into it (the spell) is easy for them to visualize than say, writing a sigil or working with an element like wind, water, or earth. That’s fine! Everyone has a type of spell work that they see/finds easy to do and works really quickly! Spells aren’t that different from praying–but they’re a lot more powerful in my opinion because you’re using *your* energy and maybe even the extra energy of other things, to make change in your world. You’re not relying on deity (although you can ask for help but that’s a post for another time). You’re relying on YOU and YOUR energy and YOUR force of will to make a change in your life. Those vision boards that work so well for non-pagans, who magically see the pictures on their boards become reality? Yeah they’re literally doing a spell and they don’t even know it.  Focus, intent, repetition, BELIEF. Bam.  You’ve got a working spell my friend.

🌊 Water Magick🌊
Here’s a list I’ve compiled for different types, places, and times to collect water and charged waters. I use these primarily for different energies to paint with but the information can be used in a variety of ways to fit your practice.
Types: 💧 Rain: cleansing, protection, energy (if collected during a sun shower it is also associated with balance and the first rain in the month of May (Aqua de Mayo is considered to bring good health, luck, and eliminate dark entities ) 💧 Creek/Stream: purification, harmony 💧Dew: Health, eyesight, beauty 💧 Fog/Mist: Creativity, balance, partnerships 💧 Ice: Transformation, balance, creativity💧 Pond/Lake: peace, contentment, relaxation, self reflection 💧 River: moving forward, protection 💧Sea/Ocean: health, power, goal manifestation 💧 Snow: Transformation, balance 💧 Spring Water: growth, cleansing, protection, prosperity 💧 Swamp/Waste: Banishing, binding 💧 Waterfalls: power, energy, success 💧Well: healing, wishes, intuition
💧 Tears: healing, compassion, emotional upheaval, blessings, binding, fertility/pregnancy, self reflection
☔ Seasonal Rains☔ These are specific associations for rains collected on the day or night of a solstice or equinox which make them more rare. 💧 Spring: New Ventures 💧 Summer: Growth 💧 Autumn: Gratitude 💧 Winter: Blessing
🌙 Moon Water🌙 In general water charged under the moon is considered sacred to the goddess and is associated with feminine energies and intuition. Here are some associations with the specific phases: 🌑New/Dark: curses, banishing, divination🌘Waxing Crescent: attraction, wealth, success 🌗 First Quarter: creativity, motivation 🌖 Waxing Gibbous: good health, attraction 🌕 Full Moon: Healing, cleansing, clarity 🌔 Waning Gibbous: undoing, cleansing 🌓 Last Quarter: breaking bad habits, banishing 🌒 Waning Crescent: wisdom, illness, balance
📝 Note: you can also charge your water under full moons that correspond to your intentions. Examples- full flower moon for fertility, beauty, and feminine energy or full moon in Aquarius for the added associations.
🔆 Sun Water: (Water charged from dawn til dusk) positivity, energy, power, strength, masculine energy. 🌹 Rose Water: (Either rain, dew, or snow collected from roses or condensation collected from boiling roses) love, protection, commitment, beauty, compassion 💀 Gravestones: (water collected from grave sites) ease of loss, restfulness, burying or releasing feelings. 🏛 Monuments: (water collected at monument sites) remembrance, nostalgia, patriotism, loss 🌈 Rainbow: (Water collected during a sun shower while a rainbow is present) luck, wealth, happiness, fulfillment, positivity.
I hope this helps you guys! As always, listen to your intuition about the energy of a particular water you have collected and remember to charge it with your specific intent.
Light and Love friends!

This is some bath magick that you can tailor to you. Make sure you have the basic materials but becauss this magick is specifically made to make you feel better, change some herbs up or you know, whatever.
Do your thing.
Rowan’s, “Bathe Me the Fuck Better” Bath Spell
Tumblr media
You Will Need:
As many candles as you want (I chose six, and had red, white and blue ones. Not because I am a mad patriot but because they’re associated with health, love (of self), and cleansing.)
Filter paper to make a lil’ bag out of (if you don’t have this to hand, you can chuck the stuff into the bath water as long as it’s safe to do so).
A small elastic (rubber) band to tie the bag off with.
A bath full of favourably temperatured water.
Rose petals.
Lavender buds.
Smoky Quartz, Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz (you can have some of those, all, or one).
Pink Himalayan Salt.
To make this easier, prep your bag before you run and intend on getting into, the bath.
Open your filter paper and place the salt in the centre first - remember that you’re going to seal the bag with a rubber band, so leave room around the edges.
Then add the rose petals and lavender buds into the centre of your little salt pile.
Lastly, add your crystals and then seal the bag by pulling all of the edges upward towards each other, and tying the band tightly around the neck you should have.
Once your bath is run and you’re prepped, you
may
want to do this
optional step:
To add an extra oomph, pass the baggy through the smoke of your favourite incense. Mine, in this case would be vanilla.
Final bit!
Place your candles around the edge of your bathtub, and as you begin lighting them, repeat this phrase (you can do this aloud or in your head) until each candle is lit and flickering deliciously:
By the warmth of the flame, I am cleansed. By the crackling of the fire, I thrive once more. Et sic factum est, et semper erit.
Now place your bag into the water and climb in. Allow the troubles of the day to melt away as you soak amongst the flames.
