cassie had never thought sheād be a mum, more of a cool aunt instead,Ā āyeah, lettinā you know now, i wonāt be touching a nappyā she says, sheād be happy to hang out with the kid but that was about it.Ā āmhm, eventually, it takes a little while. doesnāt it?ā she takes a sip from her milkshake, secretly she was excited to meet the little one, but she wouldnāt let on just yet.Ā āitās not a quiz, iām just curious yaāknow. canāt you remember anything?ā cassie gives him a grin.Ā
lane answers cassie with a nod. the nurturing stage does take some time according to the pamphlets ... he thinks. ānot under this kind of pressure, i canāt.ā he squeezed his lids shut and scrounged around for some little tidbit of information. āoh, okay, get this ... ā lane slapped his hands onto the table, bracing himself as he leaned forward eagerly. ā ... babies have way more bones than us adults. weāve only got, like, fifty or something, but theyāre born with a million little tiny ones that, like, melt together as they grow up.ā

when: afternoon.
who: @oflanesā
where: strings & things music store.
On that breezy afternoon, Jackson found himself walking towards his younger brotherās workplace. He was no stranger to the music shop as he spent enough time there to get acquainted with the employees and the owner but never when Lane was there. Except that time, he had his own motives. Earlier that week, Jackson had dropped his twins off at Stepping Stones and decided to check up on Penelope as it has been quite some time since the two had spoken. You could imagine his surprise when his eyes laid on her babyĀ bump.
Jackson didnāt really know if he should feel angry or sad that no one in the extended family had told him about the news but he had decided then that heād at least make the effort to try and reach out to Lane. Despite knowing deep down that he wasnāt the one who should do it but he was still the older of the twoĀ ā plus, he knew Lane would never come to him.
The doorbell rang, letting everyone in the store know that there was a new costumer. But thatās not why Jackson was there. He stepped up to the counter, a bright smile on his rugged features.Ā āHey, Iām looking for an employee of yoursāā His sentence was cut short when he spotted someone trying to sneak by them. āLane?ā Jackson called out to him, rolling his eyes.Ā āCome on, man. What are you? Twelve again? Donāt be a fucking baby.ā
the moment that he glanced at a window and spotted his distinctive figure headed towards the front entrance of the store, lane was cursing and scrambling to get out of his older brotherās sight. they havenāt spoken in six years, but when his girlfriend came home from the first day of school back at the start of the academic year and told him that she had two morrison kids in her class, lane spent a few weeks dreading what suddenly felt like an inevitable reunion.
then penelope got pregnant and he sort of forgot all about the possibility that his brother might pop up somewhere until he was walking through the door of strings & things. lane hastily commandeered a coworker to take over his register and tipped the brim of his hat so that it covered most of his face as he tried to step away without being seen by jax ā to no avail, unfortunately.
he sighed in defeat and spun around on his heel as his brother called out his name in that same old scolding tone that used to let him know that he was in for a fucking lecture. āj,ā lane greeted with a nod. he stood rigidly, arms folded and shoulders noticeably tense. āheard you beat up dad.ā regret flickers across his face the moment he mentions it ā not because heās worried that heās dredging up bad memories for his brother, but because he wonders if jax knows about his shameful little secret.
( heās never told anyone that he rushed to his fatherās side after he heard about the brawl, but heās never been quite sure if the man was conscious or sober enough to recognize him. )

lane nods as penelope reminds him about the mobiles. āalmost forgot about those.ā he sometimes feels like each large task he completes causes ten small ones to pop up in its place, but he tries not to sound too worn out as he glances around the room again. itās starting to look like an actual nursery, he thinks, and some of the tension saps from his shoulders. āso, the changing table over there ? ā he asks penelope, nodding towards the wall opposite the door. āyeah, okay, it should fit perfectly,ā lane agrees, but he wrinkles his nose when penelope contemplates whether or not theyāre going to need whatever a shoe rack is.
fortunately, lane has done enough reading to provide some insight. āpenny, babies donāt need shoes,ā he confidently informs her, ālike, where are they gonna go ? they canāt walk. itās in the pamphlets.ā lane takes one of each thatās on display at her doctorās office whenever he accompanies her to appointments, stacks of the small informational booklets teetering on his bedside table and spilling out of the glove compartment in his van. āi donāt think we need to worry about getting one of those right away. what about the rocking chair ? and where did you say that i should put the little dresser ? ā he figures that clearing out the furniture thatās crammed into their narrow hallway should be his next task.

Since Paxton had been spending more and more time at Strings & Things, they had been getting to know the employees there, and that included Lane. They were there that day browsing, looking through a stack of CDs before looking back at Lane, gesturing vaguely in his direction.Ā āDo people still buy CDs? Or is it more vinyl?ā He asks, genuinely curious.Ā

chair tipped onto its back legs and enormous boots propped up on the counter, lane was in his usual spot behind the cash register as several customers milled around the store. āare you asking about, like, everyone around the world ? or you asking specifically about the people who shop here ? ā he countered, ābecause i think those are two completely different answers.ā

Clicking his tongue, Jules attempted to lure both dogs away from the door, at least to give Lane an easy enough entry.Ā āUhāno, they probably shouldnāt be eating anything like that, it would be hell on their stomachs!ā He laughed a bit at the sight of the bright orange foil bag.Ā āThey donāt know any better unfortunately. But if they behave while youāre here, then maybe theyāll get some treats later, hm?ā He raised his eyebrows downward at the dogs as if they could take the hint. Backing up, he took a small detour to point at the fluffy dog bed in the small living room, big enough to fit both pups.Ā āIci, ici,ā Jules commanded, voice still even and patient.Ā āAssis, reste.ā Reluctantly, both dogs followed the commands and curled up on the glorified pillow.
āSorry for them,ā Jules apologized, looking back up at Lane and smiling brightly.Ā āBut yes, I am Julien, so you did get the address right this time! Just Jules is fine if youād like. This isĀ RĆ©mi and Oscar,ā he pointed to the pug and the dachshund respectively, as they looked up at him with expectant eyes.Ā āTheyāre just excited, weāve not yet had many visitors. It must be fun, to be so excited by new scents everywhere you go.ā He made is way into the kitchen, which was open to the living room; heād pulled up a separate chair next to the bench in front of the piano.Ā āI can get you some water, would you like ice or no?ā Most of his dishes and glasses were on the lower shelves in the outdated, dinged-up cabinets; the rather nice, still-new-looking glass he retrieved looked out of place in that setting.Ā āIāve got a few exercise books with some useful warm-ups so you donāt feel like Iām dropping you into the deep end and can get warmed up, and so I can sort of assess where youāre at in terms of skill. Are you very familiar with reading music, and the staves?ā Putting the glass under the faucet, he turned it to fill it with water, but the front of his sweater was assaulted by a rogue stream of water spitting out of the side of the faucetā¦yet again.Ā āAh, shāā He cut himself off before he finished the rest of the recognizable swear.Ā āIāve been meaning to get that fixed, but Iāve just not had the time,ā Jules half-mumbled, setting the glass aside to pat at his front with a kitchen towel.
lane was relieved when the apparent homeowner confirmed that he was indeed julien ā or jules, as he invited lane to call him. stuffing the half - eaten bag of cheetos back into his pocket, he took his first tentative steps into the house and glanced at each dog as he was introduced to them. āitās cool. i get it. iāve got one too, but cooper is a lot more chill most of the time. doesnāt even blink when the mail carrier shows up.ā heās lived on chestnut drive for his entire life and spent a lot of time working on exterior maintenance jobs for the wealthy residents of fair lane, and heās unfamiliar with the standard sycamore way house in comparison. he openly glances around as heās lead through the living room, but stops when he realizes heās being nosy and instead glanced unsurely at the piano bench and the single chair pulled up beside it.
which one was he supposed to sit in ?
lane tilted his head, fascinated as he approached the piano and saw what appeared to be music books stacked up beside it. āoh.ā he murmured, watching jules rush into the kitchen. āyeah, water would be cool.ā he wasnāt desperately thirsty or anything, but jules already had a glass in his hand by the time that lane was answering him. āi donāt need ice. uh, so, i donāt really know how to read music, like, at all. it sounds weird ācause i work at a music store, i know, but iām just a cashier so i donāt need to Ā ā holy shit ! ā lane had lifted his head to glance at jules as he was speaking to him and witnessed the spray of water splatter across the front of his sweater. āoh, youāve got bad caulking,ā he recognized instantly, āweird that whoever owned this place before you didnāt fix that before putting the house up for sale, but i guess it is pretty easy to do yourself.ā

he lifted the hem of his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face and peered around the small room, assessing the work that he had just completed and taking note of all that still needed to be done. the two cribs were assembled and he had moved them to where penelope wanted them. the changing table was also assembled, but shoved into a temporary spot so that it was out of the way while lane awaited instructions on where to put it. penelope was still fretting over whether or not theyāll need two, but glancing around the room thatās already looking sort of crowded to him, lane is more concerned about whether or not two would even fit inside of the nursery - to - be.
thereās still a rocking chair and a tiny dresser placed awkwardly in the hallway outside the room until their permanent home is decided upon. tucking the screwdriver that he was holding behind his ear, lane turned his head at the sound of footsteps and met penelopeās gaze when she appeared in the doorway. ācribs are done,ā he informed her, nodding at each one, āsoās the changing table, but i didnāt know where to put it. iām probably gonna bring the rocking chair in next. whatās up ? you couldāve just yelled if you needed something.ā laneās brow furrowed in concern as he rushed over and placed a hand on her back, concerned about her balance. / @penabramsāā

Whatās the best / worst practical joke that youāve played on someone or that was played on you?
šš¬š¤ š„šš§š. | ACCEPTING
āso, i actually wasnāt purposely trying to play a practical joke on him, but when i was, like, six or something, my brother got adrien to babysit me while he was at work or whatever which pissed me off, cause, like i was six. i could fucking take care of myself, but anyway. i climbed up a tree outside of our house and watched from a branch for hours while adrien freaked out on the ground and yelled at me to get back down here this instant or whatever it was he kept saying. i was making faces at him and flipping him off and shit from the top of the tree. the truth was that i had climbed up way too high and couldnāt get back down, but he just thought i was fucking with him. now, as for the worst practical joke thatās ever been played on me ... itās gotta be school. what the fuck was that shit with all the fractions ? we were eight.āĀ
