STARCO OVERVIEW - Season 1
Tumblr media
I’m writing this series of posts to give Star and Marco’s interactions, and the way they related to and shaped their character arcs and growth, both as individuals and as a pair of friends and, eventually, lovers. These are going to be descriptive posts for the most part: the show is over, and we have been told with very clear amounts of exposition that Star and Marco are the most important person for each other, and the main key to being able to achieve happiness, so I don’t feel like there’s much left to speculate, and I definitely feel like I shouldn’t have to convince anyone anymore of how important their bond has been throughout the show. What I want to do is (a bit self-indulgently at times, try to humor me on this, it’s one last big celebration of the show!) retrace their journey from the beginning, highlighting what themes and elements were there from the beginning, which moments brought important and tangible changes to their dynamics and personas and maybe, just maybe, make someone go “wow so they planned this since the beginning!” or “wow so even if later seasons focused less on them it was still a recurring element throughout their relationship!”.

STAR COMES TO EARTH (1x01a)
Season premiere, the birth of Star and Marco’s friendship. After a rocky start they quickly bond over a shared fight experience that showed us (and them) from the get go how complementary they could have been for each other:
Marco wanted some excitement in his life, both to stop being called “Safe Kid”, and probably as a semi unconscious reaction to being someone who always had a hard time getting out from his shell and comfort zone. Star provided that, not just by bringing monsters and fistfights in his life, but by being the kind of person who could have finally helped him live his life a little more. Marco clearly has a bit of a neurotic personality, but he could drop his “safe kid” act after the first segment because he wasn’t entirely lying when he said that he likes taking risks. He should have just phrased it slightly differently, “I would like to take risks”, as an umbrella term for making new experiences (remember, the show is a coming of age story for Star and Marco first and foremost). And Star is the person who dragged him out from his comfort zone, something that he always would have liked to do, but never had the courage to.

After... rather specific finale,it's quite up to us if we"ll get a more satysfing payoff in the form of movie. If you're also disliking series modern "closure" ,check out this petition to let Gumball earn a better ending.

Honestly, I don’t like these edits. But I just got two hour sleep and the voices in my head told me to do it.  I might delete it later. Still I wanted to homage the series that got me into animation with the movie that made me an otaku later on.
Music and animation on this AMV aren’t mine and they’re only used for criticism and parody purposes used based under the fair use of content.

The Starco was never closer ,yet so far away in the same time. That Unresolved Sexual Tension trope frustrates me so freaking much, because in that point,it's just completely unnecessary for Star and Marco's relationship, and alongside with good opportunity to finally make dorks be together, after them finally enjoying mutual feelings, after the moment of sincere romantic intimacy and honest little chat that didn't happen since Booth Buddies, they wasted a nice chance to also introduce Star's character growth. Because THIS was the first moment she didn't run away from her feelings, and instead decided to confront them. To probably stop lying to herself anymore, confessing to Marco indirectly and knowing that holding his hand just felt good, and being okay with that. She realized that while she was scared to feel it once again, because how much pain it brought to her in the past,it doesn't have to go that way again. For that very few seconds, she just stopped being afraid of following her heart anymore, acknowledging how much she's in love with Marco just for being him. And that if they"ll both act on these feelings, they actually could be as happy as they never were before.
Now,remember the beginning of an episode? While Star had to admit her feelings to his face, she wasn't even able to form a proper response. To conclude, that would be actually a big step forward in Star's personal development, not because of the whole romantic drama, but because she would finally know what she wants, which could also contribute to make other decisions.
But I'm still so damn frustrated about the way they're gonna developing it. (Look at Kim Possible,Daron!)

Random thoughts
Oh yeah,so after these whole four years Daron decided to fuck us even more.
1.So she tries to make us believe that it was Blood Moon who did bring on Star's subconcious jealousy about Jackie?
2. And that Blood Moon destroyed Jarco and forced Marco stay on Mewni?
3. That Marco's feelings for Star also meant nothing, because he,out of nowhere, said to Tom that the kiss meant nothing and fell for Kelly in one episode, and started dating her right after it? Does she mean to make Marco look even worse in that whole damn love dodehacendron?

Teens just being teens
So, let me get this straight, while being a simple Starco trash I am, and thinking about how Lake House Fever made a huge regress in Star's character, I actually realized that how wrong could in fact I be, if the situation in Curse will eventually lead to some sort of more serious Starco development. What I mean is,will Daron manage to make it all look like a freaking plot twist to further devastate the half of the fandom just in the end of series,to not allow to reduce overall viewership,or will she choose a more logical path after these whole four years of endless ship tease between the duo? Talking about Tomstar,I'm really not mad about this ship, sorry, and yet I adore Tom in the same time. I just think Tom deserves a better relationship, than the one he currently is in,to improve his self esteem, imho the last episode and Is Another Mystery highly indicates it. But anyway,my point is why probably (if Curse or other new episode will go with break up option) , Star and Tom didn't end this so soon.
1. To create even more evident parallel with Jarco than before.
First of all,at the very beginning we've got a clear sing that Star does,in fact, enjoy the time she's spending with Tom-it was actually the main reason she started dating him again; few fun interactions they shared together in Club Snubbed,Demonicism and perhaps other short one in the Lint of the Catcher, she was glad that after all stress she went through recently, she finally found someone to help her forgot about all of that and relax a bit. Of course,it was quite a temporarily solution, because she took care of racism and sleep portaling problems soon after that. So,yeah, she generally finds Tom fun and worth spending time with, but the time she spends with him is never priority to her. The same goes for Marco, who always enjoyed Jackie's presence, but in fact, she was never his first choice (except for Scent of a Hoodie, maybe). Another thing is how they just let the third parties hanging (Marco in Just Friends and Starcrushed,Star in Is Another Mystery) and don't even try to explain.
2. They didn't want to end it only because of kiss.
Probably the most meaningful example: Tomstar not breaking up over kiss, and Jarco not breaking up due to Star's confession. I remember some fans who, back then, also expected Jackie to do something under the pressure, but the conclusion didn't come so fast. But,Jackie didn't want to end this relationship without really knowing what Marco wants, and that's only when she gave him an out. Before that, she didn't have a clue how he feels about the confession himself,so didn't knew if it's worth ending it. And Tom was also clueless. Kiss in LHF got swept under the rug, because Tom didn't really know what Star wanted (Star literally running away from problem didn't help with that either),but hopefully, when he"ll see it,he"ll do the same.
3. To show how much Star has to do to mature in that point.
This episode did a great work to show the contrast between Star and Tom. And not only shown how different approaches they have when it comes to their relationship, but also about LIFE approach. Tom may not be angry about the kiss, but he made it clear that he would want some honesty from her side. And it's 100% understandable. What Star does? Is angry and doesn't want to be honest about that. It really did seem to me that they handled her character pretty poorly there, but then I understood, they wouldn't show her being as mature as Tom out of nowhere,so something big still has to happen on screen. She's a dumb teen, who's gonna make dumb decisions,it has always been a part of her personality, and if they wanna change it,they will do that gradually. To make it look even more like a real life scenario,no matter how damn frustrating it is to us,viewers. And well,if they really meant it in these particular episode,I think they still have a chance to improve that part of Star's personality. Honestly I have no idea what Curse and probably other episodes will bring to the shipping's case, and of course writers could go drastically another path,so well, the whole analysis of mine is just theorizing.
