Mexico Highway 1 taught me that just because it looks like a highway on the map, it might not be what I expect from a highway in the states. See the following image of the map. But we enjoyed this route and used 4wd to get through some of the rocky sections. We kept expecting to see a paved two lane road ahead but never did. There were washed-out sections and a few places where the road drove up a dry stream bed over large rocks. This was the route from the north that locals used to access good-sized villages. I was glad to have all the suspension, extra fuel capacity, and recovery gear on this surprise adventure. It was also great having another Revel van along with @sharkboyg. This turned out to be one of my favorite parts of Baja. Tonight’s camp nailed my preconceived ideas of what Baja would be like. This was camping under towering 70ft tall cactus in a maze of granite boulders. I’m so glad I found this desert paradise. Baja has been everything we had hoped for and more. Our @winnebagorvs Revel @mercedesbenzvansusa Sprinter 4x4 adventure van might be the perfect vehicle here. In most of our favorite places, a non-4wd low-clearance vehicle wouldn’t be able to access it. There have been hours of dirt roads filled with big rocks and deep ruts, and almost all of these end in deep sand on the most beautiful beaches with glowing blue-green water. Our revel then gives us all the creature comforts once in these backcountry camps. And @starlink has allowed me to upload my YT videos from anywhere. My RIP Kit suspension from @agileoffroad has been tested with the notorious Mexican dirt (and paved) roads and trails. Our recently upgraded @bilsteinus & @foxracing shocks and struts have made a huge difference in ride quality. Baja is fantastic; however, you do it. We were looking down on our double beach camp. This seems impossible, but we keep finding magic in Baja. It's been full of fun with new friends, glorious beach camps, tasty tacos, and warm weather. Good morning Baja. Dawn and dusk are magical here. I’ve been up early most mornings creating images. But today, I hiked up to the mountaintop to watch the sunrise with only my iPhone. It was liberatingly light, but once there, I sure wished I’d had my big camera. A reminder that shortcuts don’t always take me where I want to go. But they do still get me out there. And that’s way better than not going at all. Baja, Mexico has been wonderful. We have been camping and traveling with fun people. We spent a few nights parked next to @otto.mobil and continue to tour with @dolly.s_diary. They even have a freezer with ice to replenish my H2o bottle. Thanks so much for that. Here are some of the mages from the last few days we are now about 2/3 of the way down south. It's definitely noticeably warmer and continues with bright sunny days. Today were in Loreto. It was a nice city to stop over in but Kathy and I both decided the campgrounds and general tourist vibe aren't our favorites. Tonight we will be in a very scenic spot on another beach with lots of vanlife going on. Hiding from the wind at Punta Final, Baja. It was unbearable with blowing sand and rocks on the beach that was paradise 4 hours before. A local suggested we park between these decaying stores. It was quite the experience as we found the old patio was totally sheltered and the buildings were a modern-day ghost town. This is what adventure travel is all about. As miserable as the wind was, this was an awesome experience and a glimpse into what Mexico is like. Baja is stunning, not in the normal ways but in a distinctly Mexican way. I'm trying to let go of all expectations and just take it as it comes. Camping on the beach at Punta Final was magical. $10 a night but you feel like you have the place all to yourself. Everyone says Baja keeps getting better as you go south. I'm super excited to begin exploring the southern half of my home continent. Today we crossed into Baja, Mexico, through the border town of Tecate. I can't say it was a smooth transition, but an order of tacos calmed us down, and things improved as we relaxed and let this adventure take control. So much to share in my forthcoming video about today. But for now, we are spending our first night in a post-apocalyptic abandoned resort in a gorgeous spot on the beach of the Sea of Cortez.
