The third outfit of "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is Phryne's disguise of a brown velvet jacket, black camisole and pants, along with an embroidered headwrap worn while trying to draw out the Russian Anarchists.
Borrowing Tatiana's embroidered headwrap and brown velvet coat to confuse the anarchists, the rest of Phryne's wardrobe is in similarly muted tones. The deep brown velvet caplet with mid-length sleeves and a wide collar (possibly allowing for a hood) is worn on top of her black camisole with a straight neckline and decorative scalloped edging. Her classic black wide leg silk faille pants add to the practicality and color of the outfit.
She accessorizes with fawn colored gloves embroidered with a black emblem of wheat, and a beautiful hand embroidered brown head wrap which features a variety of colors and types of floral embroidery, from large orange flowers to green grass to blue and red sprigs. The earth colors tie into her large leather bag and add to the somber tone of the scene. Phryne finishes off the outfit with dark strapped heels.

The third outfit Phryne wears in "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is a gorgeous blue and purple coat with a matching purple cloche accented with blue floral embroidery.
The star of this outfit is the beautiful chinoise coat made of black silk with midnight blue damask floral designs and purple silk trim on the pockets and her lapped sleeve cuffs. Her coat is lined with purple silk, and has a standing mandarin collar with a single hidden closure at the waist. Marion Boyce, the costume designer, added cut out elements from original 1920's silk embroidery, attaching two large blue flowers to the left shoulder, as well as one on her hat. She finishes off her look with a blue silk organza floral brooch pinned to her shoulder.
Her accompanying cloche is a matching purple felt with a tight molded brim and decorative swoop near Phryne's left cheek, along with one of the silk embroidered flower motifs also seen on her coat.
Underneath her coat, Miss Fisher wears her dark blue camisole with small scalloped trim on the straight neckline, along with her navy blue wide leg silk faille pants. She accessorizes with a bag made of the same fabric as her coat, long teardrop earrings, and a large purple amethyst and diamond ring.

The second outfit Phryne wears in "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is her pink pajama set with embroidered details.
As Phryne turns, we can see the camisole top actually has a row of buttons down the back as closures, with slits along the side seams and thin straps that connect the front to the back. Wavering embroidery decorates along the neckline of the camisole and the hems of her pants, and large floral elements can be seen on both the pants and the top.
This pair of sleepwear has shown up five times in the series, 1x03, 1x10, 1x11, here in 3x02, and in 3x07 as well. Marion Boyce, the costume designer, created the camisole and matching pants out of a second-hand tablecloth.
"It has a gorgeous embroidery on it which was incorporated into the design of the pants and long style pyjama top." - Marion Boyce, costume designer

The first outfit of "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is a luxurious red velvet coat over a silver camisole and matching pants, complete with a shaped straw hat accented by feathers.
Known as the Coral Dreamcoat, Phryne's coat is made of a silk shot coral velvet with silver silk lining. Closer examination reveals godets (triangular inserts of fabric to add movement and width) of the velvet lined with silver piping on each side, along with a front tie and upturned sleeves with beaded decorations hanging from the ends of each.
"[The coat] has a front tie, which gives it lots of movement. Gareth Blaha, who's really quite sensational with finishing pieces, made these beautiful dangles off all the sleeves and the front tie." - Marion Boyce, Costume Exhibition Catalogue
Serving as a backdrop for her coral coat is a scoop-neck camisole with a wide hem, and flared trousers are made of a matching grey faille. Topping it all off is an authentic 1920s straw beret, adorned with a few thin maroon swirling feathers on top of a coral and maroon ostrich feather pouf and decorated with two gold buttons.
Phryne also brings along her grey woven handbag with a golden clasp that has been seen previously in 2x01 and 2x02, and ties in with the silver in her coat lining and her camisole and pants. She finishes the look with grey suede heels, white leather gloves, and glass bugle bead earrings.

The seventh and final outfit of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a beautiful black net dress decorated with silver vines and a gold floral headpiece.
Known as the "Tarnished Net" dress, this gorgeous gown is made of a black silk slip underneath a black netting embroidered with a burnished gold floral design, with a wide elaborate lace border. The dress itself is a simple wrap dress, with wide shoulder straps and fastened together at the waist with a 1920's clasp shaped into a lily pad with decorative pearls that belonged to costume designer Marion Boyce.
Phryne accessorizes her gown with a beautiful wrap made of antique tulle with a similar wide burnished gold lace border to match the edging of the black netting of the dress itself. Her hairpiece is a complimentary metallic gold floral decoration set onto a comb. Diamond cluster earrings and a burnished gold ring finish off the look.

The sixth and penultimate costume of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is Phryne's beautiful mermaid costume, complete with sequin scales, shimmering chiffon wrap, and gold jeweled turban.
A whimsical nod to a siren, Phryne's costume consists of a sequin halter-top bikini with a wide strap across the back, with the point of the bottom piece connecting at the center of the top. The lower half is covered with sequinned scales with a green silk backing on each. The entire ensemble is made with antique luminescent sequins and gold lurex, with a sea green metallic thread combined with antique gold metallic thread creating the binding on the edges.
"To create a 'mermaid' you must research the fabric. I designed a piece that had scales, when Phryne swam the scales went up and down, they moved like a fish." - Marion Boyce, Series Costume Exhibition Catalogue
Adding to the underwater effect is Phryne's blue-green chiffon wrap, finished with the same sea green and gold metallic thread edging. It attaches at the center of the bottom with a simple tie and loops around her wrists to create the illusion of waves. She finishes the look with her gold lamé head wrap, seen previously in 1x03, with a bow created from green crystals.

The fifth outfit of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a fetching blue embroidered kimono, paired with a gold lamé headwrap with a jeweled green bow.
A staple in Phryne's considerable wardrobe, she appears backstage in yet another gorgeous kimono dressing gown. Crafted from an imperial blue silk, it is embroidered on each side with leaves and a section of yellow and red roses before trailing down into a bunch of green grapes. This authentic 1920's fabric is not only embroidered, but also embossed with leaf-like patterns throughout. As tradition in a genuine kimono, the swinging sleeve is attached only at the top of the shoulder, with the bottom left open to allow the under-kimono to show through.
The lining is a lovely bright green silk in order to pick up on the colors of the floral embroidery. She finishes her look with a gold lamé turban as part of the mermaid costume underneath, complete with strings of green beads and jewels to create a bow. Her gold head wrap can be seen in a different configuration at the end of "The Green Mill Murder" (1x03).

The fourth costume of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a lovely kimono style coat with red fasteners, worn over a simple silver camisole and accessorized with a red hood and grey silk scarf.
Phryne's theme of light blue with accents of red can be seen in her eggshell blue Chinoise coat with red frog closures (a traditional Chinese method of using thread in loops and knots to fasten clothing) and embroidered with yellow and red butterflies. The coat has a mandarin style collar and lapped cuffs in the same style, decorated with matching blue buttons on the cuffs and back coat tie and self-covered buttons along the pocket hems.
Underneath Miss Fisher wears a silver camisole with a straight neckline, her classic white silk faille pants, and grey suede lace up heels. She accessorizes with a silver silk scarf with glimpses of embroidery, hinting that this is the same scarf she wears in "Unnatural Habits" (2x12), a pair of spherical red bead earrings, and a large white stone set into a ring with a red base.
Her hat is a red velvet hood with a straw brim and decorated with small feathers dyed a matching eggshell blue, larger feathers in an accent red, and a guinea fowl polka dot feather in front of a larger fluffy feather held to the hat with a red hat pin.

The third elegant ensemble in "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a gorgeous mint green beaded tabard over a light chiffon underdress.
Worn far too briefly when Phryne arrives late to her evening with Jack, this incredible beaded tabard is an original vintage 1920's piece, with green silk net and luminescent sequins and bugle beads used to create stunning patterns and lines, as well as shimmering flowers along the waistline and back hem. As seen in the costume exhibition, the tabard is a singular piece of fabric, with a hole for the head and stopping mid-back. Silver metallic lines connect the sides and also attach the fluttering sleeves - made of the same chiffon as the underdress - to the tabard.
The tabard was purchased for the series from a dealer in the US, and is a great example of both the benefits and pitfalls of using vintage outfits. Marion Boyce, the costume designer, and her team had to remount the original tabard onto stronger, modern fabric in order to keep the piece intact.
"[The fabric] was far, far too fragile. We found a matching silk tulle that wasn't going to change the texture of the piece. It was important that it did not overpower the tulle backing that was originally used. We then dyed it to match the color, in this way retaining the intent of the original designer." - Marion Boyce, Costume Exhibition
Phryne complements her look with a large curved jeweled hair slide, seen in the promotional photos for the dress worn in the season opener, and silver chandelier earrings. She also accessorizes with a diamond bracelet, a silver ring with a white flower in the center, and her glittering silver heels, worn in the first episode of the series.

The second outfit of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a shimmering sea-inspired gauzy coat and scarf worn on top of white camisole and pants and accented with a unique blue straw hat.
Known as the "Mermaid Coat", Phryne's sheer coat is made from whisper green tinted silk chiffon purchased from Italy. Turquoise and green lines of embroidery run up and down the length to create texture and visual interest. It has a sea green and silver net lining in order to give the ensemble a rippling effect, with shot blue silk organza serving as both the scarf and the binding on the cuffs of her bishop sleeves. In the season three costume exhibition catalogue, Marion Boyce remarked, "In this particular piece, I wasted everything to be quite evocative of the sea - evocation of seaweed - a murky wake-like feeling".
Underneath Miss Fisher wears a simple thin strap white camisole with a straight neckline and wide hem at the bottom and her classic white silk faille pants to serve as a canvas for her exquisite coat and scarf. She complements the outfit with a curved brimmed hat made of fine straw and dyed to a lovely blue. Milliner Rose Hudson created it with a 1920s blue organza pompom and white feathers cut into ascending triangles, all set onto the hat with a matching blue organza hatband.
Phryne completes her look with grey suede heels, long green jeweled earrings, white perforated leather gloves, and a circular crocheted grey bag.

The first stunning outfit of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a gorgeous draped navy blue sheer fabric with a silk underdress with a single dramatic sleeve attached with a jeweled bracelet, topped with a matching feathered headpiece.
Suitably sensational for the season three premiere, Phryne appears in a tabard made of French navy lace and dark beads creating floral and leaflike patterns. "The fabric in this tabard is simply stunning - it does all the work," Marion Boyce commented in an interview with the Guardian. A 'tabard' simply means a rectangular sleeveless piece of fabric covering only the front and back. The fabric connects on the side with beautiful diamond tabs. Underneath she wears a bias cut midnight blue slip with a straight neckline. An additional triangle of fabric attached to her wrist by a gem encrusted bracelet serves as both a sleeve and a cape as Phryne wafts through her scenes.
Miss Fisher complements her look with a headpiece made of a plume of dark feathers, as well as silk navy gloves and bejeweled blue t-strap heels. Her diamond earrings each have two angled lines holding a large gem between them. To finish it off, as she travels to the theater, Phryne dons a luxurious brown fur wrap with red silk lining to keep warm.
We see this ethereal gown not just in the first episode of season three as she's preparing for a night out with Jack, but also in a large series of promotional photos, worn instead with a curved jewelled hair slide with gems set on slender wires.
