Top 10 careers in physiotherapy
What are the top 10 careers in physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists assess their clients by planning and delivering individually designed treatment programs to maintain, improve, or restore physical functioning and mobility; alleviate pain; and prevent physical dysfunction. They’re employed in clinics, extended-care facilities, hospitals, sports organizations, rehabilitation centres, or may work in private practice.
According to the Government of Canada, physiotherapy is “expected to face labour shortage conditions over the period of 2022–2031 at the national level,” and job opportunities in Canada on average are considered “good.”

Understanding Physiotherapy Licensing: How to Practice Physiotherapy in Canada
In Canada, you must have a license to call yourself a physical therapist or a physiotherapist—often abbreviated to PT or PHT. A license to practice physiotherapy is issued by organizations (regulatory colleges or regulators) in each province or territory.
The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) assists internationally trained physiotherapists get their Canadian licenses. They work on behalf of provinces who provide the license to practice (except Quebec, which has its own process).
Australia is world-renowned for its leading-edge physiotherapy research and practice. With such amazing programs, it’s no wonder that Australian graduate-entry physiotherapy degrees are highly sought after by Canadian university graduates with academic backgrounds in kinesiology, health sciences and human kinetics. And did you know that all the physiotherapy degrees OzTREKK represents are recognized by the CAPR?
Here's what to expect during the process!

Physio Students: A Day in the Life in Adelaide, South Australia!
What’s it like to study physiotherapy in Australia?
First-year Master of Physiotherapy student, Madeline, recently took over the OzTREKK Instagram to share what a day in her life is like at Flinders University!
Here are some of the best questions from Madeline’s takeover, along with her answers.
Why did you want to study in Australia, and why did you choose Flinders University? Based off my four-year undergrad, I knew off the bat that I wasn’t really ready to go straight back into school in September. I sort of started the application process in Canada during my CASPer, then started looking pretty much immediately at schools in Europe and Australia.
And then Flinders, it’s actually sort of a funny story. I’d applied to other programs within Australia and they just weren’t really working out. I was having issues with getting everything processed, etc., and then I reached out to OzTREKK and they actually helped me with my application. It was sort of like a “meant to be” moment.

Why should Canadians consider Bond University’s Doctor of Physiotherapy program?
In May 2007, Bond University introduced Australia’s first entry-level Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) degree. The two-year program was developed in response to the critical shortage of qualified practitioners identified by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and various State and Commonwealth health authorities.
The Bond DPT adopts a holistic problem-based learning approach adapted from the highly successful model developed by Canada’s McMaster University. By initially limiting the intake to 20 students and working extensively with their network of industry colleagues, Bond was able to guarantee high-quality clinical places for all students and ensure a one-on-one personalized approach to the academic learning process.
The two-year DPT at Bond is an accelerated degree, so the program runs through three semesters per year instead of just two, which means you’ll graduate a year ahead of the rest.

What should you know before studying physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is an extremely popular program with Canadians, and we often have physio grads eager to cohost helpful webinars for prospective students. After all, who better to learn from than from someone who’s done it?
They have all the great advice!
One of the most frequent tips we hear from current physio students and graduates is, “Know your anatomy and physiology.”Learn more about Australian physiotherapy programs!
What OzTREKK students say about knowing anatomy
“It’s important I mention that Australian programs do not review any anatomy material that should be learned in undergrad. They wholeheartedly expect students to know their stuff from day 1, and the main piece of feedback we receive from students who commence the program is that they wish they reviewed their anatomy or studied more of it in undergrad, as they felt behind and it was a struggle. I like to encourage students to think of it more through the lens of ensuring that they know their stuff rather than ticking a box in order to gain entry into a program.”
“I can only say I wish I learned anatomy more before attending this program because professors here assume you know a lot about it.” Macquarie University Doctor of Physiotherapy student
“Review your anatomy, make sure you assumed knowledge is up to date.” Macquarie University Doctor of Physiotherapy student
“I would suggest doing some [anatomy] review before starting because it with help with every class down here.” UQ Master of Physiotherapy Studies student

What’s the difference between an MPT and a DPT?
What’s the difference between the MPT and DPT? Australia is a world-leader in physiotherapy degrees, offering both Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) and Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) programs.
Tumblr media
The main difference is really the length of the program. The Master of Physiotherapy is typically a four-semester program delivered over two years.
Conversely, the Doctor of Physiotherapy is a longer, six-semester program generally delivered over three years. The exception to this is the Bond University Doctor of Physiotherapy, in which you can complete all six semesters in just two years of more intensive study.
The two extra semesters of a DPT provide a bit more flexibility in terms of electives and there is often an additional clinical placement. This means that if you want to complete physiotherapy licensing in Canada after you graduate you’ll be more likely to have obtained the required number of clinical hours within the scope of the program, instead of having to seek out further practice after your degree.
So, the DPT isn’t like a PhD? Unlike the MPT, the DPT will include a research component, although it’s not a PhD. Think of it more like an extended master’s program. However, if you’re thinking about going on to complete a PhD, the research component will give you the leverage to follow that path!
What about if you want to practice as a physiotherapist in the United States? If you’re planning to practice as a physiotherapist in the United States, Lara recommends going with the DPT.
Generally it’s the only physiotherapy degree option to be recognized across all states, although you should always check with your desired state’s physiotherapy licensing board to ensure your degree of choice will satisfy their licensing requirements.
To hear more about this from Lara, watch the video below.

Should Study Physiotherapy in Australia
Why should Canadians study physiotherapy in Australia?
Mariko, a University of Sydney physiotherapy student
Meet students Mariko and Nich, who have kindly agreed to highlight some of the reasons why they moved from Canada to the University of Sydney to study physio!
Evidence-based Practice Evidence based practice is at the core of most Australian physiotherapy programs. This means that as a student you’re learning the latest, safest, and most effective techniques and practices as evidenced by clinical research.
It’s an increasingly common practice worldwide, but some of the leading physiotherapists in the discipline, like Peter O’Sullivan and Jerry Powell, have helped to lead the growth in evidence-based practice from Australia.
Clinical Placements Both Mariko and Nich have practiced as kinesiologists in Canada. They love working with people and helping patients live healthier lives. Most Australian physiotherapy programs include close to 1000 hours, if not more, of clinical experience over the entire duration of the program, so you’ll get lots of hands-on training.
Post-Graduate Employment Options By completing a physiotherapy degree in Australia, you can practice in Australia, Canada, or the United States after you graduate. To practice in Canada you will have to complete physiotherapy licensing requirements like an exam and credentials assessment with the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators. Many students successfully complete this step in and are now part of top-notch physio practices in Canada—including OzTREKK students!
Travel You’ll be living in one of the most beautiful, diverse countries in the world. Surfing at the beach, snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef, hiking in the rainforest, eating incredible food, catching concerts and sporting matches—there’s really no shortage of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Bond physiotherapy and occupational therapy students will soon be learning in brand-new, cutting-edge facilities
Set to open in August 2023, the $45-million project at Robina will meet the booming demand for new physiotherapists, exercise and sports scientists, dietitians, and occupational therapists.
The five-level building at the university’s Institute of Health & Sport precinct will create an additional 11,500m2 of education spaces, offices, and associated car parking beside Cbus Super Stadium.Bond Univeristy Institute of Health & Sport building
It will connect to the university’s existing High Performance Training Centre and double the current space for allied health programs. A traditional Smoke and Welcome to Country Ceremony by Kombumerri Elder Uncle John Graham will mark the start of work by ADCO Constructions.
The project is self-funded by Bond University and will create around 200 jobs during construction and more than 50 new highly-skilled, ongoing positions.
Bond University has held the site at 18 Stadium Drive for several years with an eye to future expansion.
It was provided to the 2018 Commonwealth Games as a warm-up field for athletes and since then has been used by Bond Bull Sharks sports teams as an additional training area.
Key features of the new facility include
an exterior design that complements the adjacent stadium and will add to the overall presentation of the Robina precinct
a range of new clinical spaces, including simulated hospital wards and clinician consulting rooms to accommodate treatments in physiotherapy, nutrition, rehabilitation and occupational therapy
a world-class 60m gait laboratory that incorporates pressure sensors and high-speed cameras to analyze human movement, used to assist everything from recovery and rehabilitation for age-related conditions to elite sports training

What is the difference between occupational therapy and physiotherapy?
Students often ask us, “What’s the difference between physiotherapy and occupational therapy?” While there are significant differences between the two professions, but also many areas where they overlap.OT can help kids with various needs improve their cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor skills
Physiotherapy (or physical therapy) is a health care profession with a focus on assessing, improving and restoring physical function.
Occupational therapy also looks at physical function, but extends this to consider how this affects your ability to engage in occupation such as daily activities, leisure and work.
What is Physiotherapy?
A physiotherapist’s purpose is to improve a person’s quality of life by using a variety of treatments to restore function, help alleviate pain, in the case of permanent injury or disease, to lessen the effects of any dysfunction. Physios are highly trained healthcare professionals can focus on back and sports-related injuries, or they can specialize in other areas, like an occupational therapist.
Specialization can be achieved by practicing physical therapists after meeting requirements set the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators and your provincial authority. There are many physical therapy specialties to consider, and each one has its own unique purpose and set of responsibilities. Here are just a few areas to consider:
Pediatrics
Women’s health
Sports
Electrotherapy
Cardiovascular and pulmonary
Orthopedics
Geriatric
Neurology
Practicing as an Physiotherapist
Like OT, physiotherapy is a regulated profession in Canada. That means physiotherapists must have a licence to practice. In Canada, provincial and territorial organizations called regulatory colleges are responsible for licensing physiotherapists.
All the physiotherapy programs OzTREKK features are accredited in Australia, so you could practice immediately in Australia or return to Canada as many students do.
In order to practice physiotherapy in Canada, you must register with the physiotherapy regulatory body in the province you intend to practice. The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) recognizes physiotherapy degrees from Australian universities, as long as you meet the requirements including completion of a minimum number of clinical hours.
Studying Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy in Australia
OzTREKK represents several world-renowned physio and OT programs. Australian graduate-entry physiotherapy degrees are highly sought after by Canadian university graduates with academic backgrounds in kinesiology, health sciences, and human kinetics. Pssst! Did you know Australia is world-renowned for its leading-edge physiotherapy research and practice?
At Australian universities, physiotherapy is a strong academic and clinical discipline, and Australian research in physiotherapy drives teaching and learning. This provides Australia’s physiotherapy students with opportunities to be educated in contemporary, evidence-based clinical practice!
