I can kind of understand why Toad was confused as to Luigi's identity, because he was literally shocked and startled and slightly confused. But Peach? She thinks Mario is dead, Luigi's voice doesn't sound like Mario's at all, they're wearing different clothes and they aren't even identical twins.

“Through wet eyes and a sorrow filled mind, Peach turns around to see who walked through the door. Toad’s voice she recognizes, but despite the clear difference in the other voice, her fuzzy mind immediately stared onto the familiar face and immediately assumes Mario had come back. That he had somehow survived the blast of the blue shell and has come to rescue her. But the structure of his face had minor differences. Heck, the clothes were a different colour. Yet in the midst of the chaos, she knew it wasn’t him, but proceeded to call out Mario’s name in case her eyes deceived her. And as she locked eyes with the friendly intruder, she realizes that her eyes were in fact correct, that this was not Mario, but clearly his other half. His brother, Luigi. And even though he is here, out of the dangers of the cage and in the supposed safety of her presence, she still sheds tears, as he must not be aware of the fate Mario has encountered, unbeknownst to her that he does, in fact, know.”

Something that has been my favorite thing about the Mario movie is how often both Mario and Luigi support each other. Not just verbally but also physically. Hugging, shoulder pats, forehead touches, poking and teasing.

It’s clear from the get go that these two have each other’s backs and love each other deeply and I find that incredibly refreshing seeing as a lot of ppl nowadays frown on men/brothers showing affection and love towards each other.

Not Mario and Luigi though, they are not ashamed at all to say and show how much they mean to one another and it’s just beautiful

Oh don't get me started. From teasing jabs, to complicated handshakes, to clinging to each other for reassurance or out of excitement, they just naturally fall upon each other without even a thought. It's so clear that they've been completely open and comfortable with each other since they were small children, and it's just so sweet and sincere. I can't think of many other movies centered around adult brothers that are this open and affectionate around each other. It really is a breath of fresh air and one of– if not the– major highlight of the film.

They definitely all live together. Rent in NYC certainly ain't cheap, that's for sure...

Do you headcanon that everyone we saw during the dinner scene in the Mario Movie 2023 lives at that apartment, or that the uncles and aunt and cousin were just visiting that night? My impression was that they live there and I prefer that headcanon, but I've seen some people interpret it the other way- plus, if I recall, we only really see pictures of Mario and Luigi on the walls. Kind of odd to have no pictures of the little cousin if she lives there

I'm pretty sure everyone lives in that apartment. The whole family is gathered at the breakfast table later on in the movie, and since there was no established major holiday or event happening we can only conclude they all live under the same roof.

Also... as easy as it is to miss... there is a picture of Arthur's side of the family (including the little cousin) hanging up on the wall, it was just obscured for most of the scenes.

There's also a lot of pictures on the countertop behind the table, so there's no telling how many other photos we missed.

So… apparently a storyboard drawing for the mario bros movie sequel has already been leaked. 💀 (I saw it on the twitter account @cartoonupdates if you want to see it. allegedly it’s been leaked by a reputable leaker who also leaked some accurate storyboards for the sonic 3 movie and knuckles show but idk I haven’t looked that much into it.)

I like how many of us agree that Bowser's "let's see how tough this Mario is when he watches me kill his brother" line has Luigi a little extra traumatized.

As someone who has been replaying BIS recently, I feel like you perfectly encapsulated the safe scene with Bowser. Even when I was younger I felt terrible for the guy and just wanted to get him out of there as soon as possible- and the fact that once he's finally free Starlow's still mean to him even though he's ASKING FOR HELP and even says PLEASE? It's kinda infuriating. That being said, I love Bowser angst, please do more :) /nf

After watching the Super Mario Bros movie I couldn't help but think a lot about how they shoved Bowser into a jar and put him in a cage, and even though he kinda deserved it he's basically all alone with only snarky guards begging him to shut up, which seems like an incredibly miserable and isolating experience. He had been ranting to Mario during their fight about how he was "finally going to be happy" and that he was going to make him suffer as he does.

I think in some way this sort of vengeance is a twisted sort of empathy. Bowser is so miserable and lonely that he's willing to hurt someone else because he wants someone to understand his pain. But even before any of this went down he had an army of loyal followers that he'd party with, and even with all that he was unhappy. So for him to lose even their company to be stuck all alone in a birdcage?

Thinking about all that is what prompted me to start this blog about Bowser, and then later I was recommended the DS game. And let me tell you, it is the best Mario game I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

I too was genuinely upset by the safe scene and felt like he DID NOT deserve what happened to him, especially being betrayed by his own minions like that and being treated like garbage. It felt weird, because he's the bad guy but I had gotten quite emotionally invested in him over the course of the game.

Question for the mod: have you ever played any of the mario rpgs? If so, which ones?

OOC: Yes! Started Super Mario RPG (the remake) last year, didn't quite finish though, I played through Bowser's Inside Story twice, and now I'm playing M&L Partners in Time.

Main reason why I played through Bowser's Inside Story twice is because 1: It's legitimately the best Mario game I've had the pleasure to play and 2: It's the closest thing that exists to a Bowser game so I played through it again to pretend like such a thing exists, and we are long overdue for one as the Koopa King is the only main character who still lacks his own game.

Okay thanks! Maybe I will just avoid drawing their closed lips if possible but being expressive with just the eyes seems like a bit of a challenge.

Do you ever find that the bros' staches make it hard to draw their facial expressions? Unless I'm doing an expression where their mouths are open, I'm not sure what to do. Sometimes you want a wistful or pensive look for example, but if I try and draw a line where their lips should be it interferes with their huge bushy mustaches and somehow looks wrong. But at the same time, making it seem as though they lack a mouth also looks wrong to me.

You have any tips?

Are both sides of Bowser mutually incompatible? Thing is, a lot of fans act like they have to downplay his comedic side to make him a terrifying menace, and playing up his funny side likewise means that "oh uwu maybe he's not so bad after all"

I love myself a character who can do both, and to some extent I like heroic characters who are swayed down paths of vengeance because it's a reminder that people are complex and not beings of pure good or pure evil, and that it's the choices that we make which we're all capable of.

Maybe some people find the balancing act hard, and so feel like they have to go on one side or the other but I enjoy that sort of challenge. In my comic series Ask Smol Bowser, set after the events of the Super Mario Bros movie, I'm always striving to balance this in different moments. For example, I had Bowser have this dream about enjoying a sweet romantic slow dance with Princess Peach but it then turns into a nightmare for him by having to relive her rejection of him as a monster, and then he wakes up in tears. He's also just incredibly lonely and depressed being confined in a birdcage with no real visitors.

But on the other hand, Bowser regularly has fantasies about getting Toads executed, has tried to murder Mario and Luigi (again) and as a result Mario has visible burn injuries. Literally the only thing that stopped Mario from being mauled to death is Luigi holding him back and the fact that Bowser was about the size of their hands so his actual ability to cause damage was limited.

Luigi has also just been horribly traumatized by being kidnapped by the Shy Guys and tossed in Bowser's dungeon in a death row prison cell so his reaction to Mario casually blurting out that they broke into Peach's castle is to panic and assume that Peach was going to dish out some horrible punishment to the two of them, and he's on his knees begging her not to do so.

Of course, all this is fanfiction, so make Bowser as evil or as cuddly as you want. I just don't think that he has to be totally devoid of sympathy or goofiness for him to be a truly terrifying beast who delights in ripping your heart out (both physically and emotionally)

I love how you write Bowser as as legitimately menacing. I feel like the fandom softens him- not that there's anything wrong with that, it can be endearing, and I feel like even canon Mario Bros content leans into this in some ways- but I also just love a villain who's allowed to be a VILLAIN and Bowser in "The One to Blame" absolutely accomplishes that and really does justice to the fact that he's a massive draconian beast. Like, I don't see your Bowser being invited to a tennis match with the main characters. I think, even if he were to have a redemption arc, after messing up Luigi that badly, the absolute best he could hope for is peace between kingdoms.

Yeah, when you give a big emotionally constipated monster king 1-8 kids (depending on the canon) and imply he's actually not that bad of a guy every so often, it's inevitable that a majority of the fandom is going to enjoy leaning into the softer side of his character, which is totally fine! But let me tell you, I love love love a villain who is just an irredeemable, unapologetic monster, and my take on Bowser is very much that. He is not going to get an invite to go karting anytime soon.

It's Movie-Bowser adjacent, but I can't deny that I kinda turned the sadistic tendencies up from an 8 to about an 11.

Hmm... I think this does actually make sense. I could see the bros wearing their hats when playing outside and such but they also know when it's impolite, they don't wear their hats and gloves at the dinner table for example.

Are students allowed to wear caps/hats in the States? Cause where I'm from, we aren't allowed to have anything on our heads unless if it's a special case.

Do you think the bros wore their hats to school? It would be really cute if they did, but I feel like they would get bullied for it, idk why.

Every school I went to had a uniform, so I have no real point of reference.

I think there might be some places that allow only certain types of hats, but from what I've heard no hats & no hoodies is the dress code for most public schools. But if Mario and Luigi were allowed to wear hats I don't think they'd be bullied for it. Luigi might get teased for literally wearing a giant L on his forehead, but Mario would shut that down real quick.

My theory is that when they were designing their plumbing uniforms they decided to bring back the M/L newsboy caps they wore as kids, and for most of their lives from ages five to twenty five they went mostly hatless.
