The 2024 Gender Census is now open!

The 11th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th June 2024.

It’s short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - it’s what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.

Recently realized I'm probably not actually aromantic, or at least not as fully as I thought, and it really was just because of the person I was dating for a while LMAO

I started putting pieces together, right, and after realizing that I'm *not* actually touch-averse by default (she just stressed me out so bad that i was touch-averse 24/7 around her), I started thinking, "what other things did I "realize" about myself while I was with her?"

And yep one of the things I "realized" during that time was that I was aromantic. Turns out I just wasn't feeling romantic love in that specific situation.

And that sounds like it wouldn't be so overwhelmingly convincing to me, right, because I've felt the sort of love that I think is categorized as romantic for people before. Extra layer here though is that I was dating another person at the time (who is now one of my fiancées! polyamory moment!) and I also wasn't feeling romantic attraction to *them*.

So I go "I'm not feeling romantic attraction to *either* of my partners. I must be aromantic." NOPE. I was just so stressed all the goddamn time because of this person that I had no room for pretty much any other emotion.

Finally, after I cut her off (which took me long enough, wow) I started gradually feeling more like how I felt before her. Having recently visited my fiancées and being 1) very touchy-feely and 2) feeling overwhelming *almost definitely romantic* love, I finally realized that some of the conclusions I came to about myself while dating her were, in fact, *just because of her*.

Aromantic people, I love you so much, thank you for being welcoming to me while I felt connected to that identity.
