With Dao overlooking the shop’s wares once more, tense shoulders lower. “Oh I don’t doubt it. It’s such a shame they are human though – no one needs that on their conscience. But honestly, if you want something and they’re willing to treat you – I’m sure you could wrap them around your finger in no time.”

“Ah, you make me sound like a frugal old witch.” Dao gives something akin to a snort, regarding her friend with upturned lips. How could she be trusted with other people’s money when she could not handle her own? “Eh, you could be forgiven. It is hard to resist the calling of a new lipstick.” 

Pondering, glossed lips purse, and she turns her back to the store front. “I guess. But then there are the memories attached to those items.” The Thai’s eyes, tinged today with a light brown, hover across her companion, her own dark brow raising. Such a sly suggestion from such an innocent looking being. Dao cannot help but wonder how many hearts have been broken by that petite face. “It’s not worth talking about. Aeh, Minseo, this air conditioning will make our faces drier than a desert. Let’s get some iced tea, jaa?”

Thai Popular Slang

as requested, here are some thai slang that most thai teenagers and adults use. do take note that these are slang, not swearwords. but still, i wouldn’t recommend that you use these with your thai friends, unless you’re really close to them since some people might find this rude and might get offended.

ลำไย (lam-yai) annoying : ลำไย is used to express your feeling when there’s something bothering you. literally, ลำไย is a kind of fruit, a longan. but as we have this habit of using flowers, animals, fruits, or things around us as slang and swearwords, ลำไย becomes one of the most used slang here. for example, “เขาหยุดพูดไม่ได้เลย! โอ้ยลำไย!” = he can’t stop talking! ugh this is annoying!

เปย์ (pay) to pay or to buy something for someone : these days, thai teenagers always split the bill when eating out or doing stuff together since we’re pretty เกรงใจ* of each other. so when there’s someone who promises to pay the entire bill, we often call that one person “เปย์” or “สายเปย์ *fun fact: เกรงใจ is one of the thai words that has no equivalent in english. but the closest meaning is “to be courteous”

เพลีย (phlia) fed up : “เพลีย” literally means “to be tired/exhausted.” but in this context, “เพลีย” is used to express the feeling that you’re extremely fed up with something. for example, “เมื่อไรเธอจะเลิกซื้อเครื่องสำอาง ฉันล่ะเพลีย” = when will you stop buying cosmetics? i’m so fed up with you.

มุ้งมิ้งฟรุ้งฟริ้ง (mung-ming-frung-fring) to be pretty/cute/adorable : “มุ้งมิ้งฟรุ้งฟริ้ง” is the same thing as “น่ารัก” but as some people want to exaggerate this cuteness, they just use “มุ้งมิ้งฟรุ้งฟริ้ง” instead. some use only the “มุ้งมิ้ง” part, some use only the “ฟรุ้งฟริ้ง” part, this is really up to you. for example, “ดูตุ๊กตาตัวนั้นสิ มุ้งมิ้งมากเลย!” = hey look at that doll, it’s so cute!

น้อง (nong) : literally, “น้อง” refers to the person who’s younger than the speaker. but right now, we use it to call pets/animals or someone who’s extremely cute despite being like 10 years older. for example, if a friend shows you a picture of tiny puppies, instead of saying “oh my god they’re so cute”, we just say “น้องงงงงงง” (yes, in a realllllyyyyyy long way)

นก (nok) to be ignored or refused, to fail : นก is used to say that you’ve been refused, ignored, or have failed to do something. for example, “ฉันว่าเขาไม่ชอบฉันหรอก ฉันนกแน่ๆเลย” = i think he won’t like me. i might get refused.

เท (te) to give something up, to ignore, to wing, to refuse, etc. : “เท” can be used in so many occasions, whether you got rejected/refused/ignored, you wing a test/paper, you are the one who reject/refuse/ignore someone, you cancel an appointment, and so on. “เท” literally means to pour out. so when you “เท” someone, it’s like you pour their feeling out and throw it away. but the most common occasions to use this word are when you wing a test and when you reject someone/got rejected by someone. for example, “ฉันอ่านไม่ทันแล้ว ฉันว่าฉันจะเทวิชานี้แล้ว” = i have no time to study. i think i’ll just wing it.

ฟิน (fin) to feel really great/good/happy about something/someone : ฟิน is derived from the english word “finale” because the finale is always the best thing. people use it to describe that something or somebody made them feel really great. that feeling can be happy, delicious, entertained, mesmerised, etc. for example, “นักร้องที่ฉันชอบเขายิ้มให้ฉันด้วย! ฟินมากๆ” = the singer that i like smile back at me! oh i feel so good”

โคตร (khot) very, so : โคตร is used to stress or emphasise something. for example, “ส้มตำร้านนี้โคตรอร่อยเลยอะ!” = this restaurant’s somtum is soooooo good!

ติส (tist) to be really unique, or give artistic vibes : “ติส” is shortened from the word “artist” in english. “ติส” has been used to describe someone who’s really unique or gives artistic vibes from their looks, instagram feeds, personality, etc. for example, “เขาอาจจะดูเป็นคนแต่งตัวติสๆ แต่จริงๆเขาแต่งตัวไม่เป็น” = although it looks like his fashion is really artistic, he actually doesn’t know to dress myself.
