#ALSO this is incredibly specific lmfao but i can almost always tell when a rymin fanfic is written by a white person #if the fic mentions that min's parents kicked him out and cut him off #like the demonization of nonwhite parents aside. fyi a lot of asian cultures (korea included) are collectivist #this is a very watered down definition but it means that we really value community and family #meaning that yeah even /if/ they dont approve of min's dreams they wouldnt drop him because he's family #again this is a very watered down explanation cause its complex but the point is that if youre white you probs dont know this #another way i know a rymin fic writer is white is if the fic puts more emphasis on their queerness over them being asian #which i will say theres a chance these writers are trying to be respectful by not attempting to write an experience they know nothing about #which i can respect and thats fine #but also it gets a tad jarring that them being asian gets handwaved while their queerness takes center stage #when those identities cant be separated if youre both #theyre not gay men who happen to be asian and vice versa. theyre gay asian men yknow #anyways this was longer than i thought sorry op for infodumping about a cancelled cartoon

so amelia was offering one a more "human" perspective on the passengers and throughout book 4 she was influencing his decisions (which helped min and ryan quite a lot). iirc in book 3 she mentioned she didn't like the way one did things so she took over and i think i remember hearing that book 5 would've had her challenge one's ideologies and how the train isn't fair

but then in book 1 she seemed so focused on trying to recreate her old life that she becomes antagonistic towards tulip since she got ahold of one-one, and stated she was keeping him away because he refused to make a car for her so it's got me wondering. how much of her taking over the train is from actual compassion for the other passengers and how much of it is because she wants alrick back

#yes hi i am thinking about this again #as a few people said i do think it's a case of both/fluctuating between them #i do think amelia does genuinely want to change the way one runs the train #but yknow as her grief worsens she ended up losing sight of that #deep heavy sigh

ALSO idk how to tell you guys this but killing characters off for the sake of keeping things dark/for shock value is also bad writing lol. infinity train knew how to write character deaths that serve a narrative/thematic purpose in a way that's still shocking but also natural and not forced, and THAT'S why the deaths are good, not just the fact that they're there

#too many of something will cause it to lose impact #if every season had a death it will eventually stop being shocking and instead become predictable and cheap #a death wouldn't fit in b4 because of its themes of healing/reconciling #literally what narrative purpose would min and ryan dying even serve. #their story is about their fallout as a result of how differently they deal with societal expectations #if they just die what kind of message is that?? use your brains please #ANYWAYS IM DONE NOW happy duet day #infinity train

ok since book 4's anniversary is just in a few minutes can i just say that the takes that it's bad because no one died/isn't dark like book 3 and therefore isn't deep or impactful are annoying as fuck like. two asian guys, both of whom are also implied to be mlm, dealing with the racism that they'll face as asian musicians in 1980s canada is in fact very deep?? like yes it's kept mostly subtle unfortunately but it's absolutely there and you can't deny that aspect of these characters when it comes to their development. even if you can't relate to them being asian, what about feeling like you need to have your life figured out when you've just hit adulthood? working through a strained relationship with someone you care about? you're telling me you haven't experienced these things before or what 🧍

obviously book 4 still has its criticisms, i know i do and not liking it is understandable but is book 4 is actually "bad"/"not deep" or do you just not see its depth because it's a look into a specific experience that you haven't seen before and need to have it spoonfed to you, and that your only definition of mature/deep is "character is murdered graphically onscreen" lol
