“One of the most solid pieces of writing advice I know is in fact intended for dancers – you can find it in the choreographer Martha Graham’s biography. But it relaxes me in front of my laptop the same way I imagine it might induce a young dancer to breathe deeply and wiggle their fingers and toes. Graham writes: ‘There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.’”

I'm working on a Queen of Attolia reread at the moment, and I'm going INSANE over the parts where Eugenides is slowly recuperating. People always mention the pages in Twilight that are just blank except for month labels as a creative portrayal of depression. BUT MAN. The extent to which so much feeling is expressed in prose that doesn't even MENTION feelings... Incredible.
Eugenides sits. And he practices handwriting. And he goes to dinner. And all throughout it's just the most oppressive feeling of emptiness and inner absence. He gets a "he supposed" or "he thought" MAXIMUM every two pages.
This is so impressive to me because when I write I am shouting my character's feelings. I am tapdancing their inner monologue through the streets. I am dropping flyers of their thoughts from airplanes. And I know I'm still not conveying emotion half as effectively as these chapters are.

why do you think it's so common for writers to insert themselves into their stories?

If I am going to encourage people to post their art, the least I can do is post some of my own.  So this it.
The mole god.
Thanks to this crappy picture, I remember exactly where I saw him in the Vatican museum in Rome. I remember that he is about two inches tall and solid metal, maybe bronze, I’m not sure, but he looked small yet weighty, waving his tiny little hands in the air and if he ever shows up in a story, it’s because of this image in my journal, probably from 2010.  There were lots of these figurines, but this is the only one I drew and the only one I remember clearly now.

In no particular order, and can sometimes change depending on my mood, but:
How to Train Your Dragon
Kung Fu Panda
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone/Chamber of Secrets (I'd count all of them because series, but alas, that only goes for the books - I only really enjoyed the first two movies)
To Kill a Mockingbird
Ever After
The Sound of Music
Basically any Ghibli film ever but if I have to pick one, Howl's Moving Castle
Tagging: Anyone who wants to!
Top 7 Comfort Films
Thanks for the tag @almost-born-in-1893 and @fandomsmeantheworldtome!
These are in no particular order:
1. Labyrinth
2. Les Choristes
3. The Girl Next Door
4. Bill
5. Rocketman
6. Big Hero 6
7. Goodnight Mr Tom
Honourable mention for Saltburn because it’s not necessarily a comfort film but I’m obsessed with it right now and the only thing I can think about is watching it over and over again!
I’ll tag @spineless-lobster @a-poetic-cosmos and anybody else who fancies it (absolutely no pressure!) ☺️

no offence but i think a lot of us me included don’t actually want romantic love as badly as we think and really are just lonely and crave a closeness and intimacy that feels out of reach in friendships because of society’s emphasis on marriage and the nuclear family so we project that into the never ending search for a perfect love and a soulmate when really we all just want to mean something to someone

So I started watching Miraculous Ladybug while I was working and wanted background noise. I didn't realize it was a kid's show, but it's been pretty cute so far. Reminds me of my magical girl era back in middle/high school. 🤣 I like that there are little lessons in each episode - really appropriate for the target audience.
One thing that kind of bugs me (ha, no pun intended, but I'm keeping it) is the worldbuilding. It's neat, don't get me wrong! I like the idea of the kwamis and them granting powers. I just wish some things had been explained and/or expanded upon a bit better.
For instance, I'm in season 4 now and just finished Kwamibuster. They keep going on about how if Ladybug and Cat Noir know each other's secret identities, they'll have to give up being their superhero selves. Yet...why can everyone know Chloe's Queen Bee? Why can Alya and Nino know who each other are? Why don't they have to give up being super heroes? Have I missed something or is it a plot hole or will something be explained later?
Anyway, just some thoughts while I'm watching. Bug out!
